Yay alienlanes, new blood for the metal thread!

And thanks, RDist52 for the recommendation on Eagle Claw.

There are a couple great metal tours coming up in early 2013.  One is Enslaved/Pallbearer, and the other is Gojira/The Atlas Moth/Devin Tonwsend Project.  I don't know DTP, but the other two bands on that bill are great.
My heart can't wait to meet you on the other side.

I concur with Eagle Claw. Saw them open for the Sword last week and they were great!

RDist, I love your diverse tastes in music!  I gave Eagle Claw a listen the other day when I saw them on the Sword ticket and I thought it was solid but that it lacked something to take it to the next level ala Russian Circles and Scale the Summit.  Something tells me seeing them live would change that.

Hey alienlanes.  Welcome   I'm really digging the Royal Thunder album as well and it's great to hear a metal afficionado and writer jump on board here.  Look forward to hearing some more reviews and recommendations.  Although calling Royal Thunder metal would seem to be a stretch, I'd like to mention a local band in the same vein if more on the psych rock side that I hope gains a little traction called The Pilgrim.  They too have a female lead and while her vocals might not be as versatile or strong as Royal Thunder's, their dueling guitar work and live sound are great!

Their live stuff I've heard recently has seemed heavier

Yes, I was at the Kylesa show in the back room of the Black Cat earlier this year.  My buddy and I were the first two people off the rail (if you can call it a rail), but more in front of the dark haired guy who plays guitar and sings.  If you saw an older (40) balding dude headbanging in front of that guy, that was me.

That was a great show.  I especially liked their cover of "Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun", and I was kind of shocked when they didn't whip that one out at Bonnaroo this year, as it would have been perfect for that crowd.

I would probably recognize you from that Kylesa show, as I have a pretty good memory of many of the other people who were right at the stage.  I also think I know who you are from MMJ shows, but not positive on that.

The Kylesa B Sides album released today has a version of Set the Controls on it

Cool, thanks for letting me know.  I'd love to hear Kylesa's cover of Set the Controls... again.

Ruckus there is a local Providence Doom band called Pilgrim as well check em out:

Also Eagle Claw must be seen live, what I've heard on tape does not equate to their show.

Third, I haven't looked back on old posts but right now I can't get enough of Pallbearer's Sorrow and extinction. Definitely Doom Metal pagentry at it's greatest and it's this band's first release, superb production. The vocals are secondary to the guitars and drums and their builds and slow riffs are, at times crushing. Definitely my top Doom album of the year.  I implore all to listen to it, it's on Spotify.

The dog is the lead singer or was until it died last year. Interesting concept, I'm not sure if I care for it.

That video made my dog go ballistic, but I'm not sure if it was in a good or a bad way.

Stereogum.com has their list out of the top 40 metal albums of the year. I noticed some names that I've learned from reading this thread.

Check out the sweater. I may be spending the next year knitting one of those for alienlanes!
Babe, let's get one thing clear, there's much more stardust when you're near.

ChronicHunger

My metal album of the year, if you count 70's throwback like graveyard metal
KADAVAR - Creature Of The Demon

Tired Eyes

I saw Eyehategod for the first time on November 28 at Brooklyn's great Saint Vitus Bar.  They definitely lived up to their reputation as legends of sludge metal.  They mentioned they've been working on a new album but I'm not sure when it will be out.

Still the best video of the year - Nekrogoblikon - No One Survives

It's no Nekrogoblikon but very subtle, nuanced, and multi-layered

Still up in the air over whether to do the Fillmore or have a romantic Valentine's Day in Philly
