One Big Holiday closing song

I LOVE One Big Holiday, but I don't know if it's the best closing song for their shows, as far as rocking it out and jamming. I know it's probably their most popular song, but when we saw them in Louisville last summer, there were a few songs that rocked harder and seemed to have more energy.  Run Thru was one of them, that was early in the set but they really threw everything into that one and it was great.

I don't think you necessarily have to end the show with the highest energy song, or the most popular song for that matter.  The staple closer for a while was Phone Went West, no complaints here.

I think OBH is a dandy closer, but Id rather they not be so predictable.

Ponder this - you know theyre going to play OBH when you see them, but you have absolutely no idea when they pull it out. Now thats spine tingling. Id almost wish they made it their wild card song and just went into it whenever they felt the energy and the stars aligning without going by setlist order and such :D

Mahgeetah best closer for me..

Something to ponder:
it sets a pretty damn wild precedent when they open with it. Petition time?
The river is moving. The blackbird must be flying.

You might be on to something. Id rather it be an opener than closer. And that could make for a wild show.

I still like the unpredictable factor though  :D

Check the Nashville recording.  Jim through me for a loop.  He says "It's been a real hoot Nash Vegas(or something along those lines)," then jumps right into Anytime.  I said to LoveDog, they're not going to play One Big Holiday?  That's crazy!  They got done with Anytime then threw One Big Holiday at the end and it was phenomenal.  Second best version I've heard live (behind the Ear X-tacy show where you could hear everyone singing it).

I personally wish that they rotated songs a little more and mixed up their setlists, but it's not up to me.  As Love Dog Stated, 'As they wish...'

When youre a Dead or Phish fan, you almost take for granted how most bands simply just dont even come close to their setlist variety.

The thing with MMJ though is, they clearly have the talent and improvisational skills to pull it off, but they dont.  All it would take is a little more practicing of the songs they dont typically play so they sharpen up the razor's edge on those, and walk on stage without a piece of paper with songs on it.

I definitely don't expect improvisation that ends up off in La La Land (although I would like to hear it), but I'm with you on the overly structured set lists.  They have enough material that they could dust off some of those tasty gems a little more often...

These are just ideas and wishes.

However, 'As they wish...'

Everyone brings up Phish or the Dead when talking about MMJ's setlists.  MMJ are still building their fanbase.  They're doing that by supporting their most recent album.  There is also a light show that is probably somewhat synched with their setlist.  I don't think it's too inconceivable that they will get to a point where they will play whatever they feel, whenever they feel.  But, right now they are still working.  As unfortunate as it is, there are people out there that haven't been moved yet.  Something, I'm not sure what, tells me there is a masterplan intact.

Maybe I'm just jealous I haven't seen em enough to scrutinize their setlist.   :'(

I meant improvising for the setlist by just playing songs off the cuff, not actual lengthy improvisation in the music.

I doubt we'll ever hear a 20 minute Lay Low  :D

Hearing One Big Holiday close the Sydney Metro shows was one of the best endings to a show I've ever seen.  I knew it was coming but that didnt stop the adrenalin rush that the opening cymbals hits produced.  Absolutely the best song to close with for mine!
At my house, we call them uh-ohs.

Jef

it's not a bad closing song by any means, but

a) as someone said, it sucks that its so predictable

b) i remember the Tabernacle show back in November of 2006.  show started off great, but then came One Big Holiday and Run Thru back to back, and the energy just went through the roof.

i wish they still did it like that, play it maybe 6th or 7th just to take the rest of the show to the next level.  as a closing track, all it does is work up a frenzy and then it's "goodnight."

i wish One Big Holiday --> Run Thru was the centerpiece of every set.

They do it to leave you wanting more.  You will crave live MMJ fortnightly; like the colonel's secret recipe chicken.

How about as an opener?  I think it would just kill me if I heard those cymabls at the beginning.  In Lou when they started with Anytime, you heard the intro music, knew Evil Urges was coming, then you heard Bo on the keys.  I couldn't believe that one.

The first full MMJ show I saw, they opened with One Big Holiday. It was awesome.

ALady

I do love it as a closer, but it's getting to be a bit like "Yellow Ledbetter" - almost an audible "awwww!" from the crowd when those opening notes ring out, because you know the show's almost over.
