What do you guys eat? Where do you guys go? Do you spend it with family, friends or both. Any of you guys travel..Just interested. I think we are going to have a lobster and a ham this year plus some carbs and veggies..maybe a pie or cake...We eat enough turkey year round..No traveling since both my parents are gone. It seemed like such a hassle to drive 8.5 hours to be with them for Thanksgiving years ago. I would give anything to be able to do that now days. Do any of you guys have a party. We want to know :) :) :) :)

I had Thanksgiving almost a month ago. If I don't have to work, I split the holidays with my family and my wife's. I either drive to my hometown to visit my mother and sister - about 3 hours away by car - or I drive to my wife's parent's house, which is 1 hour away by car. I eat the usual: turkey with all the fixings, mashed potatoes with gravy, green beans, carrots, peas and pumpkin pie (sometimes apple pie) lots of white wine and beer.

mine is completely up in the air this year.  i don't really know if i'll be having dinner the kids, and since i have no car now, i know i won't be going out of state to visit my parents.  sounds like an adventure; we'll see wot happens.

every thanksgiving our family goes to milwaukee. the last couple times i've gone to a concert.  last year was special...got to see MMJ.

traditional thanksgiving dinner is served. i get to watch football and spend time with the family. its always a nice week to relax and do nothing. its the only time i ever go to the movies. there's also a pub three blocks away, so that's  a plus!

but this year i think we won't be going. i think everyones coming over to minnesota this year. i guess i'm ok with that, now i don't have to take off a week of work.

moi, aussi, mon ami.
i went to my mom's bf's cottage and then did my dad's side on the monday.
we had turkey, squash, mashed potatoes, peas, ummm, oh yeah, my aunt made jello salad (what the FUCK?  i LOVE jello salad, always have, i don't care that it's sick and is basically coleslaw in jello, but i was surprised to see a resurfacing of a 1983 classic - kind of like grasshopper pie, which my mom made for every party circa 1982-1985 when she switched it up and started making harvey wallbanger bundt cake) and a whole lotta pie.  i know that pumpkin pie is traditional, but i love the pumpkin cheesecake, which has been a tradition in our family now for about 10 years when my aunt got a mistake from the bakers.

Aaaahhhhh....Thanksgiving. The ultimate comfort holiday. My favorite holiday. I spend Thanksgiving up in Red Bluff, CA, at my grandparents house. Pretty standard Thanksgiving food, usually eat dinner at about 3PM and am semi-drunk by 5PM, which always totally whacks out my sense of time. Watch football, laze about.

I gotta say, you Louisville folks have had a pretty good thing with the Thanksgiving Eve show the past couple of years...I can't think of a better way to lead into the big day. I'm sure it hurts to not have it this year, but it'll be back.

The brined turkey will make you smile.  You simply can't dry it out.  Use Alton Brown's recipe.  We have a big orange Gatorade cooler that we break out every year for this purpose only.
I'm not saying it's easy...walking into sweet oblivion.

I might have to try Alton Brown's brinded turkey.  I've tried many of Alton's recipes and they never disappoint.  I'm the cook of my family.  I don't know if I'm cooking my own dinner this year or just "helping" with others but when I cook the meal it looks like this:

Turkey (though in the past I've made roasted rosemary chicken and glazed ham)
Stuffing (1-3 kinds: cornbread from inside the bird, not from the bird, and/or oyster stuffing)
Cranberry sauce (2 kinds, the real stuff and the canned, jellied kind.  I'm the only one who likes the jellied kind)
Mashed Potatoes with the skin
Gravy
Candied Yams
Green Bean Casserole
Buttered Rolls
Cornbread
Pumpkin Pie
Apple Pie
Vanilla Ice Cream

word. i love the whole "stuffing is evil" mantra.

thanksgiving is pretty...uh... interesting for my family.

we always have the traditional fare: turkey, dressing (cornbread), wild rice stuffing, a bazillion types of casseroles, cakes, rolls, vegetables, and pies, etc... the thing is, my family members are all about some food. each year there is also a ham. and perhaps some smoked turkey, too. and barbeque.

but my two favourite things about thanksgiving: deep fried turkey. my nana's pecan pie.

oh, and i also like making a sandwich the next day with slices of turkey and that cranberry sauce you get out of a can.

LizKing531

Yeah!!!  Cranberry Sauce in a can!  I've never had it for turkey day, but my momma used to get that for me because I was the only one in our family who liked it.

Our Thanksgiving goes a little like this

turkey - draped in bacon
stuffing (rice with something else - i dunno)
potatoes
veggie
sauerkraut - homemade - it is the best ever - hands down - I'd be willing to lay
                                      money on it.
desserts

my little german grandmother knows how to make some mean gravy.  You can guarantee that if the dinner involves meat of any kind, theres gonna be gravy & potatoes & sauerkraut

Eat, chat, nap - repeat

He's my food network hero.  My friend in Atlanta got me an autograph copy of his first cookbook "I'm just here for the Food" (I do realize that having an autograph of a book from a tv chef makes me something of a dork (he inscribed it "May the food be with you" - it's not getting better is it?) - I'm o.k. with that).  Parentheses within parentheses; I have problems, I'm the parenthetical cowboy.

However, I think he came off as something of a self-important ass in that Feasting on Asphalt show.  And wow!  Those man-boobs are special.

Good eats is filmed in my aunt and uncle's old place in alpharetta, GA, where I spent 7 or 8 thanksgivings as a child.  Now that I realize that, I MUST make Alton Brown's turkey this thanksgiving.

megisnotreal

man, don't hate on feasting on asphault. i loved that show. where else was i going to learn about coolickles?
;D

Don't get me wrong, I didn't miss a minute of that show and won't miss any future episodes.  (Isn't Food Network great?  When you want to go on the coolest vacation of your life, you go to producers and pitch a show and they'll send to the best places on planet earth.)  Maybe Alton's a tad overexposed at this point for my liking.  I liked it better when I thought I was a member of a small club that prefered the odd Good Eats over Emeril or that hunky Bobby Flay.

Bobby Flay confession time:  My wife and I were in New York 2 years ago and ate at Mesa Grill.  I wanted to hate that meal so that I could shit on him to everyone I knew.  It was fucking great, as was my wife's meal.  Much to our surprise, Mr. Flay himself walked out of the Kitchen and was very cool with everyone.  I was impressed that he was actually in the restaurant cooking when I'm sure he could just sit back at this point.
