Get them in the mood and crank Okonokos, record one, both sides, on a good vinyl system.

That hooked me deep and irretrievably.

Yeah, I know that's more than one song but if they're not hooked by then, you can assuredly ditch them and move on to find another friend or relative

Phone and The Bear are what got me hooked. I love Steam Engine but it didn't grab me until the first time I saw it live.
Just yesterday my mom got hooked, I was playing 'The Way That He Sings' and when it was over she started it over and said "I could listen to this all day." =)

The Way That He Sings is the last song on side B of record 1 of Okonokos so was also part of my hooking.  And when I saw MMJ perform this live at Radio City from the first row with Jim climbing up the wall, I was beyond hooked.

I have had this happen to me.  You don't know MMJ and they look at me blankly.  and you're a rock and roll fan?  i normally pick It Still Moves to get them ready for the brilliance that is Z and Evil Urges.  also there was an old rocker who would come into the Borders i worked at.  and when we were in Liquidation we had one copy of the dvd Okonokos left and i convinced him to buy it and watch it,  he came back the next day and cleared out the MMJ section of the CD area.  That was one hell of a win.
Can you keep it simple? Can you let the snare crack? Can you let it move without holding back?

Story Tellers Dondante... So beautiful.
Doesn't matter what you're doin', as long as you're losin' your head

easy way

I've made many a mixed tape over the years and the content all depends on the person of course... if I had to take a shot at one song though:

Mahgeetah!
"the time is with the month of winter solstice, when the change is due to come..."

If you met someone that was totally oblivious to the existence of my morning jacket and you could only show them one song, what would the song be?

- i would have to say steam engine okonokos version...beautiful and powerful

Definetly my favorite song to ever listen to it shows all of greatness in one song... Love the keyboard part ;)

Love that version of I think I'm Going To Hell.  one song only one song.  Depending on the person.  but i think i might go really old school and go with Honest Man.

From my experience, One Big Holiday (Conan) and Gideon (Letterman) are the best bets.
I used that one-two punch to make my only hard core conversion to MMJ. I think those 2 videos taken at once convey the intended message as well as anything could.

It was the whole Story Tellers episode that got me into MMJ.

For me, I'd make a mini live ep to give to the newbie with:
War Begun
Phone Went West
Bermuda Highway
Steam Engine
Touch Me Part II
OBH

But my favorite is probably Into The Woods, so maybe I'd just play that.
Cuz it's been so long since someone shattered me.

I Will Sing You Songs from Okonokos

Its got the Pink Floydian quiet introspection, the beautiful melody, the soulful singing, the catchy melodic hooks, the twin guitar power riffs and the big cathartic release/crescendo, basically almost everything I love about MMJ!

Oh, yeah and the flying hair headbanging rocking out if you watch the video!

I've always played Wordless Chorus when my friends are around me and I want some Jacket, because they are usually most receptive to this.  It wasn't until I broke my aux chord for my car and only had It Still Moves in my car on the way to disc golfing with a buddy that I had to completely reconsider my approach.  I started on One Big Holiday, which my friend enjoyed, but then I Will Sing You Songs came on.  I warned him that he may not like the song because it's very slow and spacey.  He said he didn't care.  At the end of the song he just looked at me and I knew I had him.  On the way home I set the hook with Steam Engine, naturally.

Although it was Z that completely turned me into an obsessive, it was their cover of "You're a Big Girl Now" on the Bob Dylan tribute that made me look them up. I had seen a quick clip on Austin City Limits years ago but was in one of my "kids these days" moods and dismissed them. Definitely depends.

For electronic minded folks, TMIGTS part II. For Radiohead fans, Wordless chorus. Blues Rockers will like Easy Morning Rebel and if they have any metal/prog roots, leave it on for Run Thru. Singer songwriter fans will love Acoustic Citsuoca.

I am D- all the above. Thus MMJ is the tits!
