So many to choose from and it all depends on the person. Songs I love now that are among my favorite I know I probably wouldn't have enjoyed on first listen.

So, for most people I know that aren't already fans-Maybe One Big Holiday or Mahgeetah.

AMightyCaporal

I caught my fiancee singing along with phone went west  :)
Oh I'll never say I knew you, but my heart can't wait to meet you on the other side

Janet

The three that have worked for me have all been from Okonokos - OBH, Golden and Steam Engine.

Don't post much...but thought I'd sharde the story to the popping of my My Morning Jacket cherry.

I always have heard about the band, but never listened until I was watching Bonaroo - We Have arrived.  This plays on HD Net every so often.

*First of all, if you haven't seen this documentary it is a 'must watch.'

Anyway, at the end Jim James does Golden solo (i think in the press tent).  As we get into the song the film cuts into a montage of clips from Bonaroo.  The piece as a whole is beautiful and I had one of those transcending musical moments when I knew this band was going to be my next obsession (and only two minutes into the song!).

After Golden you are taken to a clip of MMJ jamming to Anytime  (i think) in the rain.  More clips flash of a drenched audience going nuts and dancing.  I wasn't at Bonaroo, but I don't think a clip of images of music could have portrayed the energy any better.   I remember thinking...how could a band that can write a song as sweet as Golden be the same band that is jamming so hard in the rain?  But when thinking back about this experience this question sums up the band perfectly.    ....I bought Z and It Still Moves later that day.

I reccomend fidning this documentary somewhere...whether on HD Net or DVD and keep it in the arsenal if you are lucky enough to share this with a MMJ virgin.

Welcome! Awesome story...thanks for sharing.  :)

That's a great way to describe MMJ. They're a perfect blend of sweet and kick ass.
Cow temperature.

Bermuda highway, the acoustic live version. It's Magical.
I'm not trying to be mysterious about it, it's just that what I do is tough to explain.

i think after the acoustic golden they have them jamming the end of steam engine in the rain...its a badass segment on the dvd.  I think that is what makes them so remarkable how they can, and not too many other bands can do this, play a song as beautiful and hypnotizing as golden and then rock out with soooo much emotion and energy (IN THE RAIN!) like with the end of steam engine.
"Listen to the river sing sweet songs to rock my soul."

You are correct....the jam is Steam Engine....I just went back and checked.

Actually, this is from 2004 and Anytime didn't come out yet, BUT I noticed I did hear a little bit of the keyboard intro from Anytime in this Jam.

...jams do inspire songs; I wonder if this was the case.  Or maybe I'm hearing things.

highly suspicious

considering how polarizing it has been on the forum, it would weed out the non-believers quickly.

This was my first listen which I still can't believe. However, 40 shows later, I'd say it worked  :cheesy:

This is all you need!!!

I shed a tear every time I see this...I didn't know anything about the band at this point, and was holed up in my RV waiting out the storm.

Wordless Chorus did it for me, so I think it's a great intro.  One Big Holiday is a great intro too.....but lately, I have I Will Sing You Songs on repeat over and over as I await the OBH II announcement, so maybe this would make a nice intro song?

Willard1979

I think One Big Holiday would be a good start  :drum:

It would depend on the person

DEFINITELY depend on the person.

Run Thru (live), for some
Rollin Back, for some
Knot Comes Loose, for some of the same
Phone (live), for "if you don't like this..let's just stop"
Bermuda Highway, for ppl with ears
Cobra (live), for "you like music...right?"
Little Billy, for a shocker
At Dawn, for a "check this out"
One In The Same, in a car & sayin "shut up" :)
Highly Suspicious, after a Prince song
Welcome Home, for my family
Just One Thing, for ME!!!

Tough question. I just kinda listed a couple songs. I'm kinda of the opinion that I don't need to "convince" ppl. Music is SO subjective. I needed no convincing when it came to MMJ. I heard it and that, as they say, "WAS IT!":) I'm a, I hear something and I like it and I wanna hear all of it, kinda guy.

Just one guys opinion to a question, and a TOUGH one...like I'm quoting, it REALLY DOES depend on the person.

P.S. I know this is gonna sound selfish (and it is, please don't judge) but I stopped telling ppl about my rabid MMJ obsession. They're just the right size. I. Want. Those. THEATER shows (selfish again...sorry). I think they're ...JUUUST right :)
Them that don't know him won't like him and them that do, sometimes won't know how to take him

Tengls

I like to start off with wordless chorus.
When you move like a jellyfish, rhythm don't mean nothin'. You go with the flow, you don't stop.

The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

EverythingChanges

Touch Me Pt.2, I'm Amazed, and Librarian were the three that kept bringing me back at the beginning.
I wonder why we listen to poets when nobody gives a fuck

Lay Low got me!

YES!  That song has it all.

But I agree with tippitoes.... it depends on who the person is.  If someone loves Golden but doesn't also love Run Thru just as much, then they probably can't be "convinced."
