All I can say is what a mind fuck. Awesome movie, one that will truly need multiple viewings to pick up more and more things. As much as Avatar was visually stimulating, this was mentally stimulating and is THE must see film of 2010.

Go see it. Come here. Discuss its badassery.

So no one else has seen this yet?....oh wait, if anyone comes thru in the movie clutch, its DB...what say you more than that sentence in the movie thread? Been discussing this a lot, and my mind just keeps going back and forth on various parts of the movie. Here's what I wrote somewhere else the night after I saw it:

I went in with a general idea of the premise, and although I could follow the 1st 20-30 minutes, I really liked how they got a new architect so they could cleverly explain a lot of how the dream sequences work. Considering when they get on the plane had to be less than an hour into the film, I was very impressed by how that next hour and a half was entirely the multiple levels of dream sequences and basically a thrill ride the entire time. Having there be a time differential in each level compared to real life was ingenius. The drive back from the theater took about 45 minutes due to traffic, and we were talking about the movie and various parts the entire time - which is something that tells me how great this movie was. Theater employee actually came in the theater before the movie to tell everyone to turn off their cell phone, dont text, take a leak before the movie starts because if you do while its on you wont know where youre at when you get back, and that its the best movie of the year  8-)

Dont know how anyone could come away from this unimpressed and glued to the screen the entire time.

SPOILER__________________________________:

I connected the dots for the most part on how the opening scene with old Watanabe would come to fruition, but that doesnt bother me much as so many other parts of the movie are left to dissect. Might have rather they left that out though and started when they were in the initial multiple level dream sequence of Watanabe doing the extraction as opposed to already letting you know Dicaprio reaches Watanabe in limbo at the beginning

The DARK

I just saw it. Best movie of the year with Toy Story 3. Only complaint (and this is a stretch) is that it would have been better if the dreams were more dream-like... if there were less concrete detail. Otherwise, it was pretty much perfect, and kept my attention the whole time. There was so much to digest; it's incredible that Nolan was able to throw so much at us in a world that takes long enough to explain. Most filmmakers would have a hard time condensing all this into a trilogy, let alone a single film.

As for the ending... I don't think any other ending would have suited it. If the top had fallen, it would have seemed too cheap and flat of a payoff. If it kept spinning, it would simply be Shutter Island all over again, without a core concept to anchor his decision. For such a gray character, only middle ground would have sufficed. I'm happy with it.

Glad to hear the good reviews.  When I saw the preview, it seemed like they just made up some stupid scenario just to have a reason to show the new special effects technique that they've been working on.   Sounds like I was wrong.

Yeah, the special effects are fairly limited - really only 2 scenes stood out but were amazing nonetheless. The main focus of the movie is undoubtedly the concept of extraction/inception and the story of their attempt to do so. It really is must see in the theaters, and Im someone who goes to the theater like 3-4 times a year usually (and I'll probably see this twice in the theater)

As for the ending...

Thought TS3 was very good, but I could never consider an animated movie to be better than a masterpiece like this.

I hear ya on the dreams being more dream like thing, but the biggest reason they werent is because as was said, the dream world needs to be as close to the real world as possible for, in this case, Fisher to believe it is reality. Because of that, I cant knock the movie at all for that, plus I found limbo to be pretty dreamlike despite the other dream levels not being like that. Similar to your thoughts on Nolan, what might impress me most about Inception is that despite the story being so complex and going back and forth very often, I found it overall easy to follow what was going on for the most part.

As for the ending & your thoughts Dark (highlight): I agree with you and thought that was the best way to leave it. My immediate thought after the movie about the end was actually that since Dicaprio walked away from the top before seeing if it would fall or not, he didnt care if it was reality or not because it was the place he wanted to be. Whether it was actually reality or a dream, that is where the movie is not easy to decipher, IMO. I'll need to watch it again, but I dont think Dicaprio ever spinned the top after being in the chemist's basement (besides doing it on the sink and knocking it off) after saying he wanted to test out his drug combination - meaning he very well could still be in a dream at the end. However, in every dream level/sequence in the movie, you are brought into the story/setting midway through and cant remember the beginning of a dream, as they stated. All the dream levels: 1st with chemist in the rain after pissing, 2nd with Fisher at the bar with girl/napkin, 3rd with Dicaprio looking thru the sniper scope - all start in the middle of something. However, after Dicaprio and Saito leave limbo, they are shown waking up off the plane. They show the beginning of this level/sequence, so it would make sense that it is in fact reality. Having so many details leave either way make that ending perfect IMO

Its about as good as a somewhat realistic sci-fi movie could get.

Id love to see a sequel or another movie with the same concept done, but anyone besides Nolan couldnt handle this.

There's a thread for movies, it's called What Movie Did You Just See?

I don't know how much clearer this could be and I don't understand the total disregard for forum etiquette by starting an entire thread about a movie. Probably why this board has slipped into 7th place.

There's also a whole section of this forum called other music, I suppose we could have just one thread in that sub forum? You're really strecthing with this complaint, me thinks.  ;D  :-/  You started threads for every color of the rainbow for Christs sake.

EDIT: I really hope you're joking and it completely went over my head.

Saw it. Loved it. Wasn't nearly as confusing and messed up as the media made it seem. I'm not sure how one could "not get it" though there were certain details that were slightly off:

SPOILERRIFFIC QUESTION (sort of) below (highlight)

So if everyone was in the van unconscious, and that made them float in the hotel while unconscious, then why didn't they float in the fortress world? Because regardless of whose subconscious it was, all the sleeping parties were weightless, no?

Agree with you and said in one of my posts that arguably the most impressive thing about the movie is how complex the concept and storyline is, yet it is insanely easy to follow (not so easy to catch all the details though).

As for your spoiler (highlight):   If they do explain that, then I missed it. If I were to make an assumption though, its that because they are further removed from the van in the fortress world, the changes in gravity have less of an impact there than in the hotel. That, or maybe something like that explicitly only affects 1 level up (and since the fortress was 2 levels up from the van, the gravity changes have no effect in the fortress level).

Response:

That occurred to me, but if the sedative didn't affect the inner ear so they could all "feel" the kick, wouldn't gravity have to penetrate through all the layers in order for the kick to work? I might see it again August 6th wiht my super-scifi friend. In all honesty, I'm willing to be this was covered by implication or in a whisper I couldn't hear due to the theater, so when i see it again I think it'll come out.

Like I said, aside from this issue, I don't know if I saw any other continuity issues, which might be what impresses me the most.

Also, Joseph Gordon Levitt turns out to be a damn good actor. I thought he was going to be relegated to a Michael Cera typecast role, but apparently Nolan likes him enough to float rumors of him being Riddler in the next Dark Knight

Sort of spoilery, but very helpful

Mostly right, except I dont think Cobb and Saito got out of limbo from dying, I think the time just ran out from the entry to dream level 1, so they both woke up on the plane

FWIW, this is basically the same concept but a little easier to understand/follow: http://www.cinemablend.com/new/An-Illustrated-Guide-To-The-5-Levels-Of-Inception-19643.html
