QuoteI've been weight training on and off for a few years.  I have always been pretty small and thin.  A high metabolism mostly... I was able to get pretty buff before I hurt my shoulder.  Now that my shoulder is better I have been going to the gym and can feel myself getting stronger.  It occurs to me though that being muscular does not exactly equal in shape so I have started to do 10- 20 minutes of running before every workout.  That time will increase but for now, I have a hard time running longer than that. The fiancee is a beast running, she may not be as fast as me but after a mile or so she'll be fine where I am sucking wind!  Her normal run is about 5-6 miles... ugh!

It's more effective to run after weight-training. If you run beforehand, it burns muscle. Also, you have more energy to lift weights if you run after your workout.

Thanks for that tip! I was thinking that I should do that tomorrow, I was having a hard time with the weights today! Oh well, live and learn! :)

Although everyone should do a 5-10 minute cardio warm-up before weight-training. It gets your heart-rate going and kick-starts fat-burning, plus it prevents injuries.

QuoteAt the age of 40, 6'4'', and 225lbs I stopped travelling with work and decided to take up Ju Jitsu. I absolutely love it.
& to think you skipped a class to see MOF!  ;)
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

Keep it up all.

Because of the insane fog that has moved into our area and hasn't left since we came back from Florida, I'm stuck inside. Only good thing is I get to burn aroun 850 calories via our eliptical. I'd rather hit the pavement.

Trying to get back into the routine of working out first thing in the morning. I'm sitting here, feeling like a zombie. This was much easier in the summer to do. If you can get your workout in first thing, it's better as it kind of jump starts your metabolism, as least for me it does. Plus you do not have to worry about trying to squeeze a workout out in at the end of the day when you have no energy and the cruel world has beaten you down.

Plus, for men, testosterone is at its highest in the morning, so you tend to have more energy. However, if you aren't a morning person, trying to workout first thing is nearly impossible to maintain on a month to yearly basis. Good luck though. I go to the gym when I can whether I'm tired or not (I work shifts).

Yeah, I had a great routine going this summer and fall and stopped after my marathon. I felt great, actually cut back on my caffeine consumption as I was naturally more energetic, and just felt better. It'll take a while to get this going again. I'll chalk it up to winter and I really do not want to get out of a nice warm bed.

It's freeze/thaw season here in Kentucky and the mountain bike trails are pretty much off limits (frozen trails are okay to ride on, but wet trails cause lots of damage).  I am trying to start my training earlier this year and I rode on some gravel fire roads close to where I live today (boring) just to get on the bike.  My first race as a team rider is March 28th in Tennessee.  I will be glad when we spring forward and the days get longer because it is difficult to get motivated when it is always dark outside...

thanks, y'all!

i never really thought of tea as being bad for me... until i realized the calorie count in an 8-ounce serving was so high... and that i was drinking 4+ servings a day...

just switching to splenda tea saves me at least 400 calories.... and it tastes just the same.

Yes, sugar soft drinks and teas are really high in calories.

However, I'd be careful consuming lots of drinks with artificial sweeteners such as Splenda and aspartame. These sweeteners are really bad for you (cancer links, high blood pressure, epilepsy, and many more). I still have the odd Diet Coke, but I've cut most if not all diet-related foods out of my life. Why not switch to real tea (Orange Pekoe, English Breakfast or Earl Grey)? Tea (or what Americans seemingly call "hot tea") is good for your digestive system and has plenty of natural caffine boost.

I don't want to come off as preachy, I'm just concerned about people's well-being.

I thought that normal tea, like coffee, is calorie-less when taken as-is

They are, until you add things like milk, cream, sugar, etc.

I'm assuming we're talking sweet tea here.
