Although I did want to see Pens-Caps for the ECF, how could I not root for the Habs yesterday? I wanted Pens-Caps just because its the best series that could've happened, but with NJ out, of course I wanted the Caps to lose. Now we have home ice until the SCF if they get there, and Montreal is the only team left I can see conceivably beating them, and thats mostly due to Halak.

Cant wait for the West series, I think both will be great. Bout to fire up the DVR for the Wings/Sharks game. My predictions this round:

Pens in 6
Bruins in 6
Hawks in 7
Wings in 6

I really want to pick Sharks in 6 because I feel like Nabokov really outshines Howard this series, but based on history I just cant

Outside of weekend games, I believe so.

BUT...DirecTV got Versus back a month or so ago. I had the cheapest package at 150 channels and only had to pay $5 more to move up to 225 channels and that package includes Versus.

...pretty good game last night. Sloppy defense by both teams in the 1st, but entertaining. Id probably only blame the GWG on Howard on either goalie

What the hell, why didn't you say anything earlier. I could have been watching the playoffs the whole time? Wow, I fucked that one up.

Thanks for the info!

Do you guys get the CBC or TSN on satellite?

No I don't, I wish. Unless it's just getting TSN for hockey games through Center Ice. I know my buddy had one of them or both in Seattle. We watched the Canucks play.

I hate the Canucks, but they do play a good brand of hockey. TSN has improved a lot over the years where it's almost as good as HNIC. It helps that some of their on and off air talent came from the CBC such as Chris Cuthbert, who may be the best play-by-play man in hockey.

For some reason they didn't show Canada's stations in HD that often. I never got familiar with any broadcasters. Which is a shame, because there were a few games that were in HD that I watched and really enjoyed.

Cuthbert was being groomed as the #1 play-by-play guy on the CBC for both hockey and CFL football, but the CBC went on strike and when the dust settled, Cuthbert was gone as were a number of their top guys including sports anchor ace Brian Williams (who is more revered than Ron McLean of HNIC and Coach's Corner fame). The reason why CTV's Olympic hockey looked and sounded so good was because of CBC input.

I don't know why you can't get HD in the States too much. It may be some sort of deal with cable companies or band width?

The most famous hockey play-by-play man still active today is HNIC's Bob Cole. He's an icon of the sport and will go down as perhaps the 2nd best off all time, right behind the late great Foster Hewitt (he's bigger than Vin Scully). The late Danny Gallivan is another legend - he did mostly CBC's Habs games in the '60s-'80s.

Detroit's play-by-play man, Ken Daniels, was another that the CBC was grooming to be their #1 or 2 guy, but he jumped to Detroit a decade or more ago (I think he didn't want to wait). Jim Hughson is considered the CBC's #1 guy; they are phasing Cole out somewhat, but he's #2. Even the #3, #4 crews at the CBC blows away almost every other stations' top crews except for maybe TSN. I must say that both TSN and CBC have great colour talent and their between-period segments are top-notch.

I'm not really sure why we didn't get it in HD. I'd say over 90% wasn't in HD. But if I was in my bedroom it doesn't matter anyway, so I guess I did watch more than just a handful of Canuck games through a Canadian broadcast.

I think people would really watch more hockey in the States if they showed more games played in Canada. I think we'd get jealous. Something like...they obviously love hockey, lets love it even more than them.  Watching games played in Canada is way more exciting for the viewer, in my opinion.

Well, there really is nothing like HNIC on Saturday night across the country. However, going to a Rangers game would be awesome and so would going to Philly or Detroit. I was at a Bruins game in Boston around 5 years ago when the Leafs were in town (I cheered for the Bruins BTW) and the atmosphere wasn't great, but neither Toronto or Boston were very good back then.

If you ever get a chance, go to see the Habs play in Montreal. That city and arena has the best atmosphere for hockey in the world (and it's a hell of a great city). Toronto has gotten too corporate, at least at the Air Canada Centre. Still, the Leaf fanbase is the largest worldwide for hockey and you can't go out to most bars or pubs when they are playing and not see the game.

.Walt

Don't get me wrong, going to Detroit would be sweet, but I think it would be a huge disappointment. Hockeytown? I wouldn't say that. I'm not surprised that the Boston atmosphere was lacking. They're the 4th team in Boston. I would love to go to Leafs game, but I think I would rather go to a small city like Edmonton or something.

If you or anyone wants to plan a trip around hockey think about coming to Minnesota. The X is considered one of the best, and it's not because it's new, but because of the atmosphere. I don't see us never not selling out a game. I'm sure I mentioned it before, but within 15 miles you have a high school team with a crowd of 5,000 fans, a college team with 10,000, and a pro team with 20,000 fans all on the same day.  Not to mention all the other high school teams and colleges in the state. There was an article in ESPN that listed Mariucci Arena on the top 5 place to go in college sports. Which is saying something, since NCAA hockey doesn't get any attention until the championship game, and I wouldn't even say that even attention.

Here an ESPN article about the Twin Cities in January , it's pretty good...

All very cool. The Fan radio station in Toronto asked HNIC`s Elliot Freidman what the best arena was for atmosphere and he said without comparison it was Montreal. Add in one of the best cities in the world and this makes seeing a game there a must.

The Bruins aren't the 4th team anymore in Boston. I listen to a lot of sports radio and read tons of articles and the Bruins are still under the Sox, but are ahead of the Celtics in fan interest. The Pats aren`t really a Boston city team (and aren`t rivals of the Celts or Bruins), so never count out my Bruins. If anything, the Celts are the losers and considering on how surprisingly well the Bruins are playing, they could re-take the town they once owned.
