Drink two sixers of Sierra Nevada Bigfoot barleywine style ale.  That'll get your head right, Sticky.

Thanks! I brew that amongst others for a living.  Posted on the same day Ruckus got his hands on it too.  Good stuff!

As if the 50 megs site wasn't cool enough.

The first time I tried it was at the IBEX (a trade show in L'ville) after party at the Bluegrass Brewing Co. One of my coworkers brought me a huge glass, probably a 20 oz. It was late, I'd not eaten since breakfast and it went down like ... well isn't that where the staff t-shirts say "Beer is Food"? I ended up downing a second one before our dinners even arrived. I am not a large lady. Two is my normal limit, but that's for normal size beer of average alcohol content.

It wasn't until the next day when we were headed back to Michigan at 7:00 AM and I felt like someone had kicked me in the face (and was threatening to commit mayhem if they didn't turn off that damned Grateful Dead crap) that another co-worker mentioned the alcohol content of Bourbon Barrel Stout, and also the size of the tumblers.

Oops.

It's fantastic beer but I limited myself to one per night at this year's IBEX.

We understand it's the '90s.

Nice story! If I can figure out how to I'll post some pictures from the brewery of it being aged in bourbon barrels.  We actually blend the bourbon aged stout with a non-aged stout to keep the alcohol content down and the flavor consistent. We sell one keg a year of straight, non-blended BBS to a bar here in town and we keep one in the taproom just for the brew crew.  It racks in at ~12% ABV and will really knock your socks off. It's called BBC Big Boy.

EDIT: to add that on the day you and Ruckus mentioned this beer I helped bottle and package 200 cases of it. As a team we did 500 cases and 80 kegs of it that day. And, yes, Beer is Food!

Sticky Icky Green Stuff

thanks for the suggestions skanks, I'll have to try some of that bells out soon.  tonight I've got more dogfish head.  this Raison D'Etre flavor is kinda the bomb.  8percent and doesn't even sorta taste like it.  sorta think dogfish head dominates that sierra nevada shit but I haven't had the celebration kind yet.  aint a cheap hobby that's for sure.

Raison D is my favorite DFH brew.

Now, Sticky, you like in craft brewer heaven. There are so many fantastic brewers in MI. I've yet to find anything from Founders and Bells that I didn't like. You need to get on dat man.

That's the fun of the range of beers available these days eh?  The Raison is one of my least favorite DFHs and I'm not a huge fan of the Unibroue.  Yet I seem to agree with mjk on many other beers so....enjoy man!

Also I had this seasonal (i think) saison from Dexter, Michigan awhile back and thought it was great.

Saisons are yum yum yum yum

Also Sticky, get to know your Belgian Trappist monk ales. They really are the bestest. And do yourself a favor and explore this blog. All about Michigan Beer. And the lady that runs it throws killer recipes up using said beers. The Founders Porter Mac and Cheese is life altering.

Has anyone come across Hopslam yet?  I found some yesterday at $21 for a sixer.  That's at least $5 more than I paid last year.  Did they jack their price way up or did I get hosed?

Anyway, glad to have it again.  I'm either better at tasting beer now or I just didn't notice how grapefruity this beer was before.  Fun beer to drink but I'm not sure if I'll buy any more at that price.

mjk73

I think you go housed majorily. Last yeat it was only like $10-12 in my area for a sixer. I haven't seen it yet but I haven't really been looking. No in a hop mood presently. Hitting my store tonight so I'll see what they are selling it for.

Jon T.

I think you're right.  I think I paid $13 last year.  I was in the mood for a smoked porter but when I walked in the guy told me they had some Hopslam for their "special customers".  This place generally takes care of their regulars, so I was kind of confused about the price.  But the more I think about it, the dumber I feel for paying that much.  Oh well...

mjk73

Trust me, i've felt that way everytime my local store sets aside Bourbon County for me. It's not a cheap price tag and I walk out of there feeling like my butt might start hurting any second from it.

Hawkeye

JonT, I've gotta pay $20 a sixer for Hopslam where I'm at, so don't feel too bad.  We've basically only got one place in this town to buy anything too exotic.  The guy that runs the place is known as "Earl the crook" (at least by some guys I work with), so we're probably both getting hosed.  I don't know if I've ever gone in this place and not spent at least $50.

Semi funny story about that place:  I go up to the counter with 2 750 mL bottles of beer, a bottle of wine, and a sixer of some kind of expensive beer (might have been Hopslam).  The bottle of wine was called "Rocket Science."  I was thinking it was a pretty cheesy name, so it would be like a $12-15 bottle.  I'm not really paying attention while he's ringing everything up.  I look up and see $55 on the register, thinking that's my grand total, and thinking "Not too bad."  Here I look up again and the total is $120.  The bottle of wine alone was $55!  But I couldn't say no and paid it anyway.  The wine was actually really good, and I actually bought it again for $55 on my birthday the next year.  But I did find it online for around $30.  I know, in the grand scheme of things, that $55 is not bad for a good bottle of wine, but I'd never paid anything like that before as a poor 27 year old dude.

http://www.wine-searcher.com/find/rocket+science

It is a very good wine though.  Recommend it if you can find it at a good price.

We could.

aMillionDreams

I paid 16 bucks for a six pack last year after eveyone else was sold out of them. I probably got hustled too since it would make more sense to buy that beer fresh. But oh well. I scored one of my favorite beers. I say don't sweat the small stuff

I payed $17 for a sixer this year which is the same as it was last year.  It's already sold out in my area but I was at least able to enjoy a few sixers before they were gone.

Also, speaking of good Michigan breweries, New Holland is another good one.  Not as good as Founders and Bells by a long shot, but they do make a mean pumpkin ale every fall.

My wife got me some Smuttynose IPA last night. I've been meaning to try this beer and others from this brewery, and I must say, their IPA is quite tasty.  It's unfiltered which I always like!

Now I need some Hopslam to get the nasty taste of Delta Spirit out of my mouth.  Why can't I get it here? :'(  Eh, actually Early Times and Schaeffer Boilermakers are what I really need.

You can have my hangover.  Those suckers will make you feel like a lightweight.  I only drank 3 but I feel like I drank at least twice that.

Here's a couple of pics of Bourbon Barrel Stout aging at BBC Clay & Main (Sorry about the quality)
