The Squid And The Whale
City Of Men

The Squid And The Whale is a great movie.  There's scenes in that movie that are genuinely uncomfortable.

City of Men was really good in theaters, I haven't seen it since then though.  I remember it being really violent but not in ridiculous ways.

I just watched There Will Be Blood and No Country For Old Men.  TWBB was good, but not as good as I was expecting it to be.  I expected more blood and violence.  However, NCFOM was great, better than I was expecting it to be.  I didn't know what to expect as I literally knew nothing about that movie before I rented it but I didn't expect that much blood and violence.  I need to watch both of them again soon (like, before Thursday when I have to return them).

Next on my list is Slap Shot and the aforementioned City of Men.

Yes.  Dark and funny.
The trouble with the straight and the narrow is it's so thin, I keep sliding off to the side

Are you hip to hockey history and life in the minor leagues, especially "Eddie Shore" - his name is brought up on a few hilarious occasions - and "Old time hockey" from the 70's?  It really helps in the enjoyment of the film, although it's not a prerequisite. This film is bang-on regarding the dialogue, violence, and life in the pro-minors for the time period. Slap Shot is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen and one of Paul Newman's best of the 1970's. Strother Martin is really funny as the Charleston Chiefs GM too.

Some more facts about Slap Shot. Current Washington Capital coach Bruce Boudreau had a small part playing a goon on the Hyannisport Presidents - look for #7 in green. Many of the Chiefs and opposing players were real life pro players from the AHL and IHL.

The Hanson brothers were all drafted by the NHL and one played 10 season in the bigs. Newman also impresses on the blades.

Just watched Children Of Men. Fuck me. Wow, that was an incredible movie, albeit wholly depressing to me.

I was not that impressed by it. Spolier Alert I think part of that was my disappointment of Julianne Moore's character being killed off so early.
That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

A point of clarification: I have been thinking that City of Men was Children of Men.  So at any point I mentioned City, I meant Children.

HA! I did the same thing when I originally wrote my post about the same movie. Thankfully I caught it and edited right away.

I didn't catch it until I saw your post...  I didn't even know there was another movie called City of Men.  Maybe I should watch that.

Yeah, different movie. I've seen Children Of Men. There are the movies City Of God, and then City Of Men is some what of a sequel. Both are supposed to have violence in them so I didn't know you were talking about a different movie. Haven't watched them yet, I'll let you know how they are.

City of God is one of my absolute favourite films.  Powerful powerful powerful.
