My first movie @ the cinema was Bambi. For years I thought it was Jungle Book but my dad told me recently it was Bambi.

Capt, you should watch You Can Count On Me, good little film with excellent performances from Laura Linney, Mark Ruffalo & Mathew Broderick.

I watched The Godfather PrtII again last night. Excellent movie (obviously!) but I still think the first is the best. PrtIII for the first time next...
God will forgive them. He'll forgive them and allow them into Heaven.....I can't live with that.

Prepare for disappointment....Itll probably seem ever worse since you watched II within the last 24 hours

Pacino is better than I remembered him being in it though

Then I shall leave it a couple of weeks, months even. Thanks for the advice.

synecdoche, new york - without a doubt, one of the most brilliant films i've seen in my 22 years.  unflinching, uncompromisng, fucking glorious. challenging, arty, you name it...  i'm still in awe.  so many tears were shed.

so sad to think how many people won't comprehend charlie kaufmaun's masterpiece....

Wolverine has been undergoing the dreaded re-shoots!

Hugh Jackman wrote to AICN explaining why...yeah right  ;)

Quote...and Phoenix is usually good, but I dont think he's ever had a role as a character as mature as this one.
Wasn't sure where to post this:

http://www.imdb.com/news/ns0000002/#ni0652421

Retired actor Joaquin Phoenix stunned partygoers at a Las Vegas club when he stepped to the stage to show off his newest endeavour - rapping.

The star, who announced his retirement from acting in October, performed three hip-hop tracks from his forthcoming album for a full house at nightclub Lavo in Sin City on Friday.

Phoenix, sporting a scraggly beard and long hair, bobbed along the catwalk, rapping while trying in vain to urge the crowd to dance.

After his set, he was left red-faced after he tripped and fell into the crowd as he attempted to step off the stage.

But despite his performance and the audience's unenthused response, Phoenix insists he is passionate about pursuing a hip-hop career.

He tells People.com, "This is me saying this is who I am. This is my story. After all the years of reading scripts and reading lines, this is my chance to do something straight from the heart and put it out there.

"When I was young I liked punk rock music but then I discovered rap. I love the storytelling aspect of hip-hop.

"Are there people out there who think I'm a joke? I'm sure there will be. Are there people who think it's going to suck? Probably, but I can't worry about that."

The performance was reportedly filmed by Phoenix's brother-in-law Casey Affleck for a forthcoming documentary tracking the star's new career in music.

Yeah. That whole thing makes me too sad for words.

Okay, here are a few words. He's an incredible actor and too young to quit and do crap like this.  >:(

The Greatest.  I am at Sundance, but I am pretty positive that you will all have a chance to see this film, as Pierce Brosnan & Susan Sarandon are the leads.  Very, very, very heavy topic.  A family dealing with the sudden death of their oldest son and the relationship that develops with them and the girl whom their son was in love with, that they never met.  Fucking cried my eyes out....if you have ever lost a friend in their early 20's, you know the heartbreak first hand.  Amazing job at showing grief and the different ways it is expressed and dealt with.  I loved it.
And it was the premier (even at 8:30 am), so the director and main cast was there for the Q & A.  Amazing film.  Will let you know about Wounded Knee tomorrow (a documentary about the 1973 standoff between AIM and the feds at Wounded Knee).

Yeah, saw the Joaquin thing a few days ago. When I saw that out of nowhere carpet interview where he said he was done acting and pursuing music, the last thing I thought it would be was a rap career.

Hes terrible on the video footage I saw

I mean, I guess since so many rappers are becoming actors, it was inevitable for an actor to become a rapper. I cant see him never going to acting though, especially when he sucks at rapping. This feels kind of like a Jordan goes to baseball thing for me, then realizes what a dipshit he was.

Also, if anyone can direct me to the guy whose putting doses in Joaquin's Tang every morning, Id appreciate it...it must be good stuff  :D

In continuing the commentary on Werner Herzog films (I have Fitzcarraldo on my queue), I just watched Encounters at the End of the World.  Ignoring my fascination with Antarctica, I found this film to be thought provoking, introspective, awe inspiring, humbling and about a million other things throughout various points of the film.

It is always a curious endeavor to reconcile Herzog's hubris against my acceptance of the brilliance of his films.  Just may watch it again.

I tried to like Herzog. First I turned off Fitzcarraldo, then I turned off Augire: The Wrath of God, then I turned off Grizzly Man. So, it didn't work. I can appreciate that he's a good filmmaker. I just don't enjoy his films. Kind of like David Lynch (though I am a Twin Peaks fan, and I liked a lot of Mulholland Drive).

Saw Benjamin Button, which I liked though it felt a bit long.
Just recently bought the criterion release of The Lady Vanishes, which is fantastic.

I too disliked Grizzly Man, but perhaps it had more to do with me not liking the Grizzly Man.  If you haven't seen it yet, I do highly recommend Rescue Dawn, a more traditional Hollywood film with Bale and Zahn and Jeremy Davies (I believe).  You may find that more palatable.

Wasnt sure what to expect exactly with this, and heard mixed reviews as well. In the end, I enjoyed it a lot. Its not quite a psychological western or a shoot 'em up, but its engaging and effective throughout. Sometimes you dont know when someone is going to raise their firearm or not, but thats part of the suspense and intrigue. I think Viggo Mortensen is 1 of the best actors going (watch Eastern Promises if you think otherwise), and he's good as usual in this, but Ed Harris (as a verbally challenged town marshall who seems sure of himself but needs reassurance) and Jeremy Irons (as a wealthy member of the community who may or may not have killed the previous marshall) are even better. I found the characters interesting and the actors engaging the whole way through, but if the viewer cant, they probably wont enjoy the movie due to limited action. Great scenery (loved 1 towards the end where theyre at some sort of pueblo-ish hotel, sharp cinematography, and I liked the music backing it. If I remember correctly it was written and directed by Ed Harris too.

3.8/5

Ridiculous--especially after his stellar performance in "Walk the Line".
Sittin' here with me and mine.  All wrapped up in a bottle of wine.

So here is my round up of movies seen at Sundance (disclaimer:  I go to visit my folks, ride the mountain, and see some flicks.  I don't go all hard-core and see movies all day, so this is what we were able to get tickets for and they were all premiers so I got some good Q & A action):
The Greatest (see previous post)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1226232/
Wounded Knee (this is a documentary about the AIM stand at Wounded Knee in 1973.  It was done for American Experience, so it will air on PBS I think in April with 4 other pieces on Native American history.  Do yourself a favor and watch it)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1352851/
Adventureland (Greg Mottola, Jessie Eisenberg, Bill Hader & Kristin Wiig...'nuff said)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1091722/
*This was not in competition and will be released 3/27/09.  Filmed in Pittsburgh (mainly at Kennywood where I almost met my death on the Jack Rabbit roller coaster at a very tender age of 7), this is a great movie.  I mean, Bill Hader and Kristin Wiig!  They were in attendance, which was wonderful, b/c one scene by Bill Hader got an amazing reaction from the audience.  I love Sundance audiences  :-*.
The Messenger

We watched this at 8:30 am on Inauguration day.  I could not ask for a more important film to watch on such an important day.  Woody Harrelson puts in a great performance.  And Ben Foster....WOW  :o
