Exit Through the Gift Shop

Very interesting and wacky documentary......quite a social commentary.....and is it a hoax? I let you decide and reserve my own opinion.  ;)

Wall Street: Money Never TalksBout what I expected, an average movie that entertains you. Doesnt come anywhere close to the first one, but I think that was expected when you got LaBeouf as the lead in a Hollywood movie. Gekko was still bad ### and I wish Douglas played more characters similar to this (though I thought he was excellent in King of California, a totally different role for him). Josh Brolin couldve used some more screen time, and I wish Frank Langella didnt leave so early as he was great in every scene. The entire soundtrack is non-Talking Heads David Byrne songs, which caught me by surprise and didnt seem to fit the movie at all, but oddly I think it actually worked. Probably worth watching just for Douglas, Langella, and Brolin, but not much else
5.8/10

Buried
Really liked this one, but I also could see it boring a lot of people. Im a big fan of movies that revolve basically around 1 scene/setting and remain interesting thanks to the dialogue, i.e. American Buffalo, London, Bug (which coincidentally was in the previews) and probably a few others I cant recall. I thought this movie succeeded on the same level and kept me entertained the entire time. Ryan Reynolds doesnt come off as particularly likeable, but I think if I was buried alive in Iraq Id also be kind of angry and short fused as well. Thought the pace was excellent with the first 1/3 setting the backstory, middle 1/3 Reynolds/others trying to solve his location, last 1/3 the wrap up/will they find him. Yeah, when I write it like that I guess most movies follow that mold, but if you watch it youll see what Im saying  ;D..If you know youre about to watch a movie about a guy trapped in a coffin for 90 minutes, I dont see how it wouldnt entertain you
7.4/10

all I can say about buried is that I now know how to operate a blackberry in a closed coffin scenario.  the only problem with movies like buried is there is really only 2 or 3 options that can happen to the character.  they live or they die.  the explanation of how he ended up there was good.  It still felt like the helpful man on the phone talking to reynolds was a blackberry customer service rep. teaching him how to use the phone.

on a side note, can't believe 127hours is nominated for so many awards.  it leaked on the net a month ago.  some phish phan getting stuck for that long is kinda boring.   franco was good and whatever but still not oscar worthy imo.

Yes, but that's only part of it. 34 states in the US are being impacted by this. It's so disturbing.  Please, if you have the chance, rent it
I was particularly disturbed by it because my parent own 40 acres in the catskills, and they have been approached to lease their land for drilling. Fortunately, they have not agreed to anything.  This is yet another horrifying example of corporate america's exploitation of the common man.
Scary stuff wood!

Ticks me off somethin' fierce for sure! My great aunt and uncle have been offered money for some of their local land to be drilled.... UGH. My first run-in with Marcellus was seeing a gigantic flame reflecting off of the clouds some far distance out from where I live.... and I just happened to have nothing to do and my curiosity got me, and I wanted to see what was the commotion... so I drove for almost an hour, following the bright light... and it landed me in the middle of a small street of houses, behind a big barn, where a flame was shooting 20-30 feet in the air. I first thought an old barn had caught fire. That was the scariest flame, just coming out of the ground, out of a huge pipe, in the middle of the night. And there were a few guys nearby, and I asked what it was, and they explained....

Then I read about how completely obliterating it is to well water that's in any sort of proximity to the drilling..... and you said Marcellus is just a portion of the movie! Ouch that's got to be scary for sure!!

Thanks so much for the recommend, I'll see if my mom can grab it with her Netflix!!!  :o

I stumbled upon the last half of Gasland on HBO a few months back.  It is disturbing, especially what some people are willing to do that harms other people and the environment in such an ugly way to make a buck.

We draw water from a well in our home here in NH and I pride myself on having the healthiest, cleanest, safest and plentiful supply of fresh water underneath my property.  Folks in this film have wells that bring up FLAMMABLE water!  A sad and hidden story.
The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

Yes, the lighting of the water was un freaking believable.  Humans, animals, and the land are being devastated by the gas and drilling chemicals that are showing up in the water.

In addition to the topic being riveting, it was a very well done documentary.  Josh Fox does a great job as an observer and concerned citizen.....and he's kinda easy on the eyes as well....sorry, just sayin' :-* :-*

I watched this for like 10 minutes awhile ago and it shocked me..I asked my friend about it who works for a natural gas company, and he explained a few things to me, and it didnt seem as bad as this doc makes it out to be..Dont remember anything right now, but maybe ill get a rehash this week.

Ruckus

Restrepo - I'm not sure I have words for this movie but I'm glad I saw it.  Real war docs are generally overwhelming for me and this was no different.  Just can't wrap my mind around it.

Blood into Wine - Something tells me Mahg33ta's seen this one.  I felt like it started off well looking into Maynard's urge to create in another sphere followed by the actual difficulties for starting a winery in a yet untapped region.  Unfortunately, about half way through, I felt like it devolved into a Wine 101 class for a bit too long but rebounded well enough in the end with the final tastings.

The Saint -  ;D - I think Val's German accent was my favorite part.  ;D

Am really looking forward to seeing the Fighter.  Yes Jaimoe, I've been a Ward fan and have seen the trilogy at least twice.  I think I've only seen one other Ward fight outside of his battles with Gatti however.

Me neither. I saw it opening weekend with my friend here who was stationed pretty close to there. It's moving and absurd and makes you sad and go WTF at the same time.

Seeing The Fighter tonight! Christian Bale...yum.

Ha ha good one.  Yes indeed I saw it - actually while drinking a pair of Maynard's wines for extra effect.   I found it interesting given my interests, but it sure seemed a niche audience (my wife got bored and left).    Some of the comedic bits were good, but the tone was all over the map.    I had a few friends that went to the local Whole Foods wine signing and it was just as seen in the movie - escorted through a long line for a 3 second meeting with The Man.

While I'm thinking of it, I saw your post about music movies.   If you or others have ideas, keep them coming.   My friend and neighbor Sean (who came to T5 w me) have been getting together once the kids are down for a little drinking and music movie watching.   Every other week or so.   So far we've done It Might Get Loud, The Airborne Toxic documentary, The Band Last Waltz, Rattle and Hum, among others...  next up is the Jack White Northern Lights one, but looking for other ideas.   The Wall (for the millionth time?)...

Pink Floyd Live at Pompeii
Okonokos
Woodstock
The Grateful Dead Movie
Tommy
Shine a Light
Rush- Beyond the Lighted Stage

Some more music-themed recommendations (all are fucking brilliant):

Once - one of my favourite films of all time
Gimme Shelter
The Kids Are Alright
Anvil: The Story of Anvil! - great rags to almost riches doc of a pioneering '80s metal band
Hard Core Logo - awesome mockumentary; Tarantino is a big fan of this iconic Canadian film about a punk rock band reuniting for one last tour
Chuck Berry Hail! Hail! Rock 'n' Roll
The Buddy Holly Story

Hawkeye

The Life and Hard Times of Guy Terriffico...good tunes, amusing.  Might just be my soft spot for country and honky-tonk.
We could.

Definitely Festival Express, good call penny.
