Source Code - Great Film! Director Duncan Jones (David Bowie's son) returns with his second film, if you haven't seen Moon I recommend that as well. It has a lot of similar themes that Moon had - morality, humanity, and emotion. This time around Jones had a bigger budget and tacked on a slightly more mainstream ending. Jake Gyllenhaal was pretty solid in it, not since Zodiac have I had much interest in his more recent roles. The movie didn't have a big weekend, but I think it will hang around awhile through good word of mouth.

Man I loved Moon. I didn't know this was the same director. I may have to check it out now.

good stuff.  I've still yet to see Christmas on Mars (I think its called?). I also read that they're making Yoshimi into a story using that album, The Soft Bulliten, and At War w/ the Mystics and making it into a theater show. Sounds pretty... interesting...

I picked up some dvds this past weekend:

"Unstoppable"--had previously watched on demand on cable so I knew it was cool.

"Tangled"--good fun animated version of Rapunzel

"Black Swan"--I buy anything Darren Aronofsky and this one did not disappoint--holy crap does Miss Portman lose her s**t!
Sittin' here with me and mine.  All wrapped up in a bottle of wine.

I love this--it was cool watching Wayne stroll around his home neighborhood like a regular dude

Last night:
"Harry Potter 7.1"---man I can't wait for the final one.

"The Big Hit"--fun older Mark Walberg/Lou Diamond Phillips movie that I missed the 1st time around.

This past Thursday: "Blue Valentine" with Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams.

Great indie flick. Romantic drama, that's highly recommended for all you realists! Also, if you're a Grizzly Bear fan, they scored almost the entire film....

Good stuff.

Fiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnaaaaaalllllyyyyy saw Raging Bull. Part of the reason why I held out so long was that I wanted to watch it in a great format, but still, I've had HD for almost 6 years...

Raging Bull exceeds all the hype and lives up to the praise. The best sports-themed movie ever? I think it is, although I'm also partial to Slap Shot (the latter is way more authentic - and funny - than unwitting or ignorant sports fans would realize). Anyway, Raging Bull's fight scenes are stunningly realistic, but theatrical too, which works beautifully. The acting is across-the-board top-notch and the editing and direction is perfect. The bonus features are well worth watching too. Great pains were taken to shoot the fight scenes exactly punch-for-punch accurate to the real bouts. De Niro trained with Jake LaMotta for a year and 1000 sparring rounds; Jake said that De Niro was so good at the end, that he could have turned pro. I believe him. BTW, I think The Fighter ranks just a notch lower in quality and everyone should try to find the awesome Robert Ryan 1949 boxing flick, The Set-Up, directed by the great Robert Wise. Ryan's portrayal of a boxer "on the take" is unforgettable.

Here's a clip of the original first bout between Sugar Ray Robinson vs LaMotta:

I'll re-visit it at some point, but I was very underwhelmed with Raging Bull

I'm surprised it took you that long! For me it's up there as Scorsese's best along with Taxi Driver. I actually just watched Slap Shot, figured it would be appropriate with NHL playoffs underway. Really enjoyed it as i usually like anything with Paul Newman.
Headdy - you really should watch Raging Bull again, I like it a lot more the second time. It helps to have a decent home theater system to really hear the sounds during the fight scenes.
That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

Slap Shot is bang-on authentic regarding the minors during the '60s and '70s, especially regarding franchises in down-and-out small towns. The Hanson Brothers are celebrities in Canada (and other hockey mad towns in the US). BTW, the Leafs signed Christian Hanson two years ago, the son of Slap Shot's Dave Hanson (one-third of the Hanson Brothers). Christian has played several games with the Leafs and is still on their future radar even though he's playing for the Toronto Marlies (AHL affiliate).

The best scenes in Raging Bull are between LaMotta and his wife and brother. LaMotta can barely contain his inner rage throughout the film. Actually, he really can't even control or recognize it. LaMotta was a bad dude, but still a compelling figure.

Actually, only the trailer.  More "grindhouse" fun coming On Demand or to a theater near you.
