Man, the news of how awful this new album is really sucks.  I was debating on seeing them in Cleveland, but it doesn't seem likely now with all of these terrible reviews I'm hearing about the new album.

I really hope they aren't heading down the path of KOL...  :-\

br00ke

so i went by for the d.b.a. portion of the pub crawl. it ended up being crazy crowded (hello, williamsburg) and if they were playing the music, i couldn't hear it. one funny nugget ... the band's people asked if they could bribe our table away from us for the band. i said no  ;D

I listened to most of the record on the live stream, and while I still think California is horrible, I liked the record more than I was expecting to.  It's amazing what very lowered expectations can do.
My heart can't wait to meet you on the other side.

I had the exact same thoughts.  There were definitely a few stinkers on there, but there are a few songs I skip on all of their albums.  I don't think this one will end up being my favorite by any means, but not as bad as I thought it would be.

You two are kind, tolerant souls.  Maybe I'll try to pick it up off my car floor and pop it in again.  Oh, I'm sure I'll be back here ranting again.  When I sing California to myself, I will always think of Mr. Whippy

With all the negative reviews from forum members, statements like this (and there are plenty more like this) concern me (not really):

"Delta Spirit's third album finds the band moving away from the roots-rock sound of their earlier records and embracing a broader sonic palette similar to that of My Morning Jacket, Radiohead and Wilco."

D'oh!
The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

Believe me, I am still very disappointed.  They were emerging as one of my favorite bands, and this album will stop that ascent in a hurry.  I was just expecting to be ready to vomit with each song I heard after initial reviews, and it wasn't THAT bad for me.  It's also something I could see my wife liking, so that helps me to be more tolerant.

JohnnYYac, it's funny you mention MMJ, Wilco and Radiohead.  My anticipation of this album and the big letdown I feel after hearing it reminds me of my first listens with Evil Urges, Wilco (The Album) and King Of Limbs.

I just got and listened to the album today.  I agree with both of these statements.  Some songs are really good.  It's catchy.  Otherside is a skipper for me...... sounds like ABBA.

I saw them for the first (and only) time last year and my very first thought was "MMJ Lite".  I will give this a listen.  Hope it's not as awful as all of you say it is!  They're back at High Sierra again this year and I was looking forward to giving them another chance live.
anything + reverb always = better

BH

I saw them this past Tuesday and it was really great.   I'm convinced now that the songs on the new album are very good and the production just ruins a few of them.   Although after seeing the songs live, the album sounded even better yesterday.

At one point in the night, Matt asked if anyone saw them the last time they were in St. Louis when they opened for My Morning Jacket.    He talked about how great MMJ were, and how when they open for most bands, usually the headliner wants the opener to be at a lower volume, and not over do it, wink wink.   But then he said about MMJ: "Those guys were encouraging us to go for it and just let it rip!"

Doesn't that sum up a lot about why we love this band?   I felt like a proud father.   ;D

Anyway, don't let your opinion of the new ablum keep you from going to see them.    They kill it live.     The drums, ooh the drums.....
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

BH - thanks for the report.   That's been my hope (about the new album) and hearing you say that is good news.   I hadn't given up on them yet until I see the new songs live.   The show I saw in 2010 was one of the best shows of the year and I just couldn't imagine they'd take such a severe turn since.

I backed out last minute and missed that show. Thanks Dave, for making me regret that decision.

I had a ticket via the person doing the KDHX review. Too much crap going on int he real world so I have to bail. She wasn't too thrilled with that so she bailed also.

Seeing these guys tonight. I've only seen a couple of there songs get the Middle Brother treatment, so its my first proper DS show. My expectations have been somewhat tempered by the latest album, but I'm looking forward to it nonetheless.
The wind blew me back, via Chicago, in the middle of the night.

I saw the show last night at Webster Hall in NYC and had a blast. It was my first time seeing them, though I've been wanting to for a while. A lot of people seem to be down about the new album, but I ain't one of them.

I saw them Tuesday and had a blast too.   I don't want to say too much as going in without high expectations is a perfect way to be pleasantly surprised, but the new album songs were way better live than the album.

i too was at last night's show. i'm one of those folks that have yet to listen to the new album  ;D the reviews weren't exactly inspiring me to lend an ear (and i also suffer from what i call "so much music, so little time"). show was good though and i was surprised by the lead singer's presence and energy. i left early though as i just got sorta irritated at the crowd and had gotten my fill.
