So how was the BOFD show Brooklyn peeps?

Rob, the first show was excellent fronted by Hollis Brown as an excellent opening act.
I was there with Penny Lane, Brooke and Mahg33ta.  Born on Flag Day found the boys in good spirits in front of a full crowd (I think I was the oldest one there). John was very sober and the band was less raucous than the last show I saw at the late show at Newport Blues cafe after the folk festival but much more in their element than their short gig at Forecastle when the sun was still in the sky.

They played about 5 tunes from War Elephant during the encores; Brooklyn Bowl is an excellent venue for them.
This was my 3rd DT show this year with 3 more shows to go until the new year.

Thanks Rob for turning me onto these guys awhile back.  Love their albums and even better live.

was some shakin' and some record playin'

Penny Lane

AGREE about Hollis Brown--don't miss these guys---an Americana band from Queens---they covered Neil Young---reminded me of The Band but the singer sounds like Delta Spirit guy.

Ruckus, I sent you that video of the song they can never play? Did you get it? Great show---in love with this band now/wish i could teleport myself to see them open for MMJ then get down to DC to see them open for DBT...I know I was slow to warm up to them but since they have their partying under control, they put on such a good show, a lot tighter.

A girl threw her bra on stage so he wore it on his head for the encore--it was hard to take him seriously doing a solo 'What a fool am I' ...

Liz Isenberg couldn't be there so early in the night he tweeted for someone to come up and sing with him so a girl in audience got up ---it was heartfelt to see it.

Great show---haven't heard some of those songs ever or rarely..

HH and I were very pumped to get the first posters (100 limited edition)..cuz we're geeks like that...
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

keep hearing about this Deer Tick.

don't want to scroll through 12 pages, just tell me what to buy and why.

thanks
My favorite band going right now.  You can't go wrong with chronological order of all their full lengths.  I'm partial to their first two bu. others would beg to differ.
Go War Elephant then anywhere else after that

Deer Tick- War Elephant

You may as well get all of it.  There's not much.  War Elephant and Born on Flag Day are definitely more of their groovier alt-country vibe, Divine Providence is their punk/Nirvana influenced album, which I love.  Others are not quite as into it, but I absolutely love it.  And IMO, Black Dirt Sessions is just a masterpiece.  So melodic, so engrossing...close to perfect.  And the EPs are really good, too.

Also try JM's other projects, Middle Brother and Diamond Rugs.  That'll keep you busy for a while!

I have a feeling the DP night is going to be plenty raucous...probably saving the crazy up for that night.

I, too, wish for a teleporter.  Super super jealous of all the kick ass music going on the eastern seaboard this month!!!

It was a good show.   Not the craziest or most fun, but a solid, entertaining show w/ some good friends.   For me, the draw was to see Born on Flag Day in its entirety.   Like you Ruckus, that and War Elephant are by far my favorites, and I got to see them play WE straight through at Newport.   So after this show (#9 in 1+ yrs) I'm feeling pretty content.    For completeness sake, It'd be good to see the Black Dirt Sessions because I've never seen any of the 2nd half of that album live (when she comes home, hand in my hand, i will not be myself, blood moon), but I'm just not as passionate about those songs.

The setlist was:
Easy
Little White Lies
Smith Hill
Song About a Man
Houston TX
Straight Into a Storm
Friday XIII
The Ghost
Hell on Earth
Stung
La La La
Dance of Love
Axe is Forever
Goodnight Irene
------
Standing at the Threshold
Art Isnt Real
Spend the Night
These Old Shoes
What Kind of Fool Am I
Ashamed

Interesting that the entire encore was War Elephant.   Was lovin that!!  My guess is because they are playing the 3 albums in entirety over these 3 weeks, they've divided up the WE songs into 3 encore setlists.   We'll see - headhunter or Christine, let me know.   If so, you'll have seen all 4 albums over the 3 shows.

Penny Lane already touched on some of the memorable moments.   The audience member who got up to sing was very brave, very good, and very well received by the audience.   Him with a bra on his head was pretty damn funny.   Looked like a big bra IMO.  John had a wry intro to Dance of Love that this was recorded by the previous guitar player, we said we were playing everything, guess we gotta play it... as if he was none too pysched.   I actually like that song and it was a treat to hear it.   He had the lyrics written on paper at his feet (I would like to have gotten that but he threw it into the crowd).

Hollis Brown was a very entertaining opener.   Good stuff.   They did not play the one song of theirs I would have recognized- Spoonful - so that was a bit disappointing.   The recorded version has McCauley on vocals so it seemed like it would have been a good likelihood, but nope.

also of note was that Ian ONeil, Deer Ticks guitarist, was the first opener.   He played 6 songs, 4 of which were Deer Tick songs, so that was a super-nice bonus.    (Walking Out That Door, Now It's Your Turn, She's Not Spanish, and Hope is Big)

* interestingly (to no-one but me), I've heard 2 DT songs at all 9 DT shows I've seen:  Now It's Your turn and Ashamed.   I had heard them at all 8 prior to this show and was expecting that streak to end, but got them both.    Not that I care about such streak, but this is the annoyingly dorky shit I amuse myself with.

Fully

It sounds like it was an excellent night! I would have loved to have been there. Thanks for reporting back to us.

I think Ashamed is their OBH---which was why (RUCKUS!) i was so dissappointing at that Maxwells show when they slowed it down with saxophone, etc....definitely an awesome moment with the crowd.

Thanks for all the awesome reviews guys!  Even you PENNY!  And Jeff please don't thank me.  Thank slimsloslider who started a thread on these guys months before BOFD even came out.  That was  my introduction.

And zanjam...I get the punk thing with DP because of tracks like Lets All Go to the Bar but I always felt War Elephant was very grungy as well with tracks like Standing at the Threshold and Not So Dense along with the emotacular lyrics.

Does Walls sound very Nirvana?  Born on Zero very Bruce?  Love is A Funny Word very Stones?  And then that song towards the end of DP that reminds me of Bon Jovi!  Ha!

When I saw DT a month or so ago, they didn't play Ashamed, and I was sad.

I know, as I wrote that I was thinking about how their influences are really all over the place, but I think the reason people don't love DP as much as the others is b/c of Lets All Go to the Bar, maybe The Bump, I don't know?  I've read a lot of reviews and it gets pretty ragged on.  But Chevy Express, Electric, Miss K are pretty far from punk, and some of my faves on the album.  But then again, I like pretty much every thing they have every put out.

I definately enjoyed this band at PC and would like to try and hit up a show or two when they are touring again.  I thought Walls was the highlight of the set list for me, but I haven't really listened to much of thier stuff prior.

Today for the first time ever I started getting Born on Flag Day songs on my Pandora station.  :cheesy:  But it still doesn't come up on Spotify.   Anyone know what the deal is with that?

New album looks dark!

Deer Tick frontman John McCauley is well aware that his band's last album didn't go over particularly well with many longtime fans. The 2011 LP, Divine Providence, was a loose, hard-partying collection that the singer says mirrored his life at the time. The forthcoming follow-up, Negativity, is more of a morning-after album.
"It's a very dark record. There's nothing silly about it," McCauley tells Rolling Stone. "It seems pretty focused, too. I think anybody that thought we lost something with Divine Providence will probably like this one."

John McCauley on Deer Tick's New Album and Deervana

Deer Tick spent a month in Portland, Oregon, recording Negativity with Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, with whom McCauley first collaborated in his Diamond Rugs side project. The band presented Berlin with demos for close to 30 songs, and he chose the 12 he thought were the strongest. McCauley credits Berlin with helping the group hone in on the essence of those tunes.

Tim Putnam
"He really trimmed the fat from all the songs. He was very much about, 'Let's get to the point, and focus, and kind of forget everything else,'" says McCauley, who adds that Berlin's hands-on approach took some getting used to. "I'm not going to lie – it pissed me off sometimes," he says. "But it was good, it was a good experience for us. We've been pushed a little bit in the past, but this was a whole new level of that."
Though McCauley has always written songs from his own experiences, he had more material than usual to work with: the singer split up with his fiancée a couple years ago, and he watched his parents' marriage fall apart – developments that took a while for him to be able to write about.
"I think I kind of went off the rails a bit after that," he says. "I fucked a lot of girls and did a lot of drugs and didn't really think too much about how I felt about it. And then once I kind of pulled myself out of it, I was able to finally reflect on it and get my shit together."
The album, due late this summer or early in the fall, includes breakup ballads, a song about smoking crack that McCauley says is "very autobiographical" and a duet, "In Our Time," about a crumbling marriage that features the pop singer Vanessa Carlton. McCauley met Carlton through their mutual friend, Patrick Hallahan of My Morning Jacket, who played drums on her 2011 album Rabbits on the Run.

Tim Putnam
"We started trying to write something together, and it just really wasn't working, but I had this song, and I thought it would work well as a duet," McCauley says. "We kind of became really close friends pretty quick. She's a wonderful singer." The album also includes contributions from the Grupo Fanstasmo horn section and lead guitar from Jimmy Russell of Portland rockers the Quick and Easy Boys.
Together, McCauley says, they helped Deer Tick apply the rollicking immediacy of Divine Providence to songs that have more in common with the band's earlier work. "It's a little closer to our earlier records, but any Divine Providence fan should appreciate how we can still keep it pretty rocking," McCauley says. "I kind of consider it War Elephant's evil twin brother."
