John McCauley's solo show at Newport this past weekend was one of my favorite shows of the entire weekend.

About the closest competition was the nighttime Deer Tick shows at The Blues Cafe with special guests like Phosphorescent, Jason Isbell, Justin Townes Earle and Langlorne Slim.

Deer Tick has quickly become one of my favorite bands to see live and I'm looking forward to their NYC show on November 7 if anyone wants to join me.

Thanks to Ruckus for introducing me to these guys a while back.

I plan on being at the NYC show in November. I love Deer Tick. Awesome shows and I agree about McCauley's solo set.

I owe J Roddy and Deer Tick to Ruckus!

one of the best fest moments was McCauley saying he really wasn't into Buffet but asking his mom (a parrot head) to come on stage, then he let her sing Margaritaville---she was terrific.

got to see half of the new album performed Sun night and the new songs are great---i was too wiped out to stay for it all but the guitarist's song was my favorite, probably song 4 of the album. He had Vanessa Carlton join him each time he performed to sing the duet they have (really pretty song).
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

Just grabbed some tickets to one of their recently-announced shows. Outside of Forecastle, I've never seen a Deer Tick show -- so I guess I've never seen a REAL Deer Tick show -- and now I'm pretty pumped!

I like their "hits" but haven't really ever given their albums a true chance outside of their debut. I'm really looking forward to diving in the deep end right into their back catalog before the show in the fall!

I was also very impressed by McCauley's solo show.

Here is a pix of him after he asked his Mom onto the stage to sing a Jimmy Buffet song.

Is this really where Deer Tick is playing in Springfield???

http://www.jbo-club.com/

Has anyone been here before? This looks like the only show I can get to on the fall tour.

joey_rogo

Apparently that club has a good bit of history and Deer Tick has played there before. I had no idea. Neat.

hey Joey- I see you've answered your own question but yes, that's where they are playing and they did play a benefit there fairly recently.   My friend Sean who grew up in Springfield has seen many a show there a long time ago.   We talked about going out for that last show but were too lazy to make the drive.   Tiny venue and would be fun.

I'm hitting Dudesmash Too.

Good to know. Judging by some youtube vids of that benefit show, I think it'll be a good time.

Dudesmash Too is looking pretty awesome. Wish I could make it.

Deervana!  On Sept13 they're playing 'In Utero' at Brooklyn Bowl.  I've always wanted to see one of these Deervana shows and with how infrequently they do them, you better believe I won't be missing this one

I think Dudesmash Too is the best music-to-cost value I've ever seen in a festival.

Deer Tick: Dream's in the Ditch

I'm really digging how they've been having other band members sing songs recently.  Clowning Around from the last album was great too.  I am highly anticipating this release.
I wonder why we listen to poets when nobody gives a fuck

buaawwww

I keep reading so much hate around "Divine Providence"... people outright hating it or just thinking it's weak.  I really don't get it at all.  I think the album is great... front to back.  To each their own I guess... but I love it.  Looking forward to the new one and to seeing them at Webster Hall in Nov.

headhunter

I don't think DP is a bad album at all.  I don't think DT have any bad albums.

I will be at that Webster Hall show and hope to see you there.

Oh man, jealous of that When She Comes Home. Waiting to hear that one live.

I'm gonna need a Deer Tick expert to post the full Springfield set because there were a few new songs and covers that I couldn't ID. It was an awesome show though. My 5th time seeing Deer Tick but I think this counts as my first Deer Tick show. They set up a tent in the parking lot and played out there, unlike last year which was inside. I really liked T Hardy Morris. Good chill stuff. John joined them for a Diamond Rugs song.

Songs I remember them playing (not in the correct order): the rock, the bump, easy, threshold, main st, dreams in the ditch, clownin around, not so dense, ashamed, art isnt real, dirty dishes, she's not spanish, mange, dead flowers, some deervana, some hank williams, let's all go to the bar and a few more.

It was an awesome show, I doubt I'll find any recordings of it but hopefully someone can figure out the setlist.
