the only one I can remember is Centro-Matic/South San Gabriel who opened on the UK It Still Moves tour

I really enjoyed them :)

Perhaps one day I'll be sophisticated enough to like him.

don't threaten us with that...i sure hope not!

but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

that has to be one the greatest openers...Centro-matic is such an underrated band.

The best opener I have seen for MMJ was M. Ward. The worst was The Sleepy Jackson.

Band Of Horses are right in the middle, as I have only seen MMJ headline three times.

ajclements004

Ben Sollee is the best opener I've seen!

I haven't seen them with too many openers (maybe 4?) so PHJB is the best because they sound good and it's something classy that gets me excited for MMJ...they also calm me down before the show ha.

My least favorite is tied: Deer tick and Antbalas at PC. Didn't click with me I guess.

I would say, I do get more excited when their opening act has horns in it, because they usually incorporate them into songs (Dancefloors, Easy Morning Rebel, etc)
no you never gotta fight with me

Best openers (that I never got to see open):

Dr. Dog
Ben Sollee
PHJB
Deer Tick
Floating Action

I've only seen Neko open for them.  The other 3 MMJ shows I've been to have been festival or Americanarama appearances.
I wonder why we listen to poets when nobody gives a fuck

Band of Horses and MMJ was a great combo!

Also seeing MMJ as the opening band for Tom Petty was a pretty great night!! :)

For me the only ones I really liked or would go see without being on an MMJ bill are:

Deer Tick
Ryan Bingham
PHJB

The worst was Saints of Valory, horrible, horrible band.
Alive or Just Breathing

GO4IT

I really don't like opening bands for MMJ.  I liked the "evening with..." 2008 tour when it was just MMJ and they played 2 1/2 hours plus each night.

That said, the Head and the Heart were very pleasant openers when I saw them in Birmingham and Leeds in Nov, 2011.

Grace Potter and The Nocturnals in Vermont was cool. PHJB never get tiring, as Jim joins them for a couple tunes. Also enjoyed Everest at T5 #5. Shabazz Palaces in Brooklyn? Meh.
The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

And they had some fans there?  Who were those people and do they realize they like an incredibly shitty band?  They are probably the same people who only listen to top 40 stations.
