The new dondante wasn't the Fela Kuti version with Carl on the sax in the beginning like they did at Bonnaroo 06 was it?

Have to agree about the crowd being horrible. Tons of talk, tons of glow sticks, tons of people shocked that a new album is coming out, saw several people actually making fun of others for "rocking out". Have to say that the crowd seemed like the crowd i'd get from the UK SAB and students, but hey it's a state university in a collge town. After Touch Me 2 I actually said that it was the Quitest cheer for an encore I've ever seen.
don't rock bottom, just listen just slow down...

phone went west was on the set list for the encore but was cut. might have been a time issue.

i am eager to get to sleep so i'll post this one note:
attn BH: tonight's dondante was a NEW VARIATION.  still not a full omnichord version, but significantly different.   :D terrific!

crowd note:  quite a few people around me were loaded when they came in.  by the time mmj was well into their set, they had run out of steam.  they were having a great time, but they were quieter by then.  ;D

also:  i know you were all there, but i didn't see one person i recognized in that crowd.  did you all have seats?

i keep wanting to write more about the show, but must. go. to. sleep.  i watched the sun come up over lake michigan from an El platform in 36º weather today.  this whole "bed" business is brilliant right now.

so, monday morning while i drink the complimentary coffee in the lobby, i'll add some notes.  :coffee:

and this:  i had a FANTASTIC TIME!

*closing laptop on  my own fingers to keep from typing more...*

This was one of my favorite performances of Gideon.  Jim came over and just kind of rubbed his head all over tom's shoulder and back while they were just tearing it up.  Dancefloors was great.  They played the end of Run Thru and it kicked so much ass.

I got about halfway home (which is Oldham County) and had a blowout.  Had to change a tire on the side of I-64 in pitch black.  A state trooper pulled up behind me to assist.  While we were making conversation, he said "What were you doing in Lexington?" "Concert." Who was playing?" "My Morning Jacket."  "Did they play Off The Record?"
Then we had a setlist discussion while I looked like an ass for not knowing how to get my spare out from where it's bolted up under my van.

That's a great story   :)

(I mean, sorry you had a blow out and you looked like an ass, but these great stories normally don't just "happen")
Be the cliché you want to see in the world.

wow, being at work is AWESOME.

they started with the heat and never really let up until golden, which was fantastic with ben sollee, very haunting and seemed even slower than normal.

Gideon had a different ending, at least to me.

dondante was completely overhauled, yet again.  i think this is the 3rd new dondante i have seen since last spring.

butch cassidy was a nice treat and a needed respite.  gave me a chance to rest my aching back.

FULL LAYLOW!!!!!!!  still only got 1/2 of run thru though.  this needs to stop.

crowd wise, i didnt really see that many light sticks or d-bags.  it just seemed that no one was really into it.  we were on the side about 15 rows up and just off the front of the stage.  the floor looked completely dead, small pockets of people getting after it, but the floor as a whole, didnt seem to be rockin too hard.

just one more reason to hate lexington

did anyone se any tapers?  i did not see a rig.

Poster is really nice quality.  Heavy paper and nice screen print only 16 x 20 but I like different sizes.
Y'all got any disco ball back there?

wow, the effort jim puts into these shows is astounding.    circuital was my top highlight, it strikes me as a very Who-like anthem, and i loves me some Who.

from my seats in sec. V (jim's side), the crowd seemed pretty active all night.  not the largest crowd you'll ever see, but i think we gave back a lot.

sadly, i "lost" carl's guitar about halfway through the show.   i could see him wailing on it, but couldn't hear it very well.   not sure whether to blame acoustics or old age.

i was so glad to hear them start into "lowdown," but then something about it didn't click for me.  once again, was it the sound in the hall or just my ears?

that's as close to complaining as i'll get.  all in all, another wonderful rock and roll concert.   can't wait to see them again in the summer/fall.

What's up with the 1/2 Run Thru.  That's my favorite song...  The build up to the second half is what makes the second 1/2 so effective.  This needs to change.
It's just the way that he sings

I will admit, I always kind of thought you had to EARN the end of that song with the first part.   Plus when they go back to the opening riff at the end, it's brings the whole thing together nicely.  Kind of circuitalish, if you will.

Can someone cite a specific example of the Dondante variations to which you are referring?  I think I know what you mean, but can't quite put my finger on it.  I'd love to go back to listen to some good examples of the variants, including (of course) a recording of last night's performance (or maybe a good You Tube vid).  Much obliged.

Glad you had a good time.  Love the state trooper story; bummer about the flat.  Bummer, too, about the Remnants and PWW tease.  Sometimes its best to not know what they cut from a setlist.

Surprised they didn't add any new songs, not one.  Circuital and Wonderful no longer count.  When will they debut live, I wonder.

Was the Gideon ending the same as they did last year, extended guitar riffs with Patrick tearing it up?  Not sure how to describe it.  Kinda like from 3:20 on in the video below.

the dondante in bham/nashville last spring was the first "new" one i heard, then the YUM show was a completely different version, now this.  Dondante seemed to always be played the same way until last spring, now they seem to switch it up every tour... god love em.

that (video) might be the same version of gideon, i would need to listen to last night again.  the best way i could describe it is the guitars had kind of a shimmering sound to them and were incredibly fast.  it may not be new, but it certainly sounded new to these ears... anyone else confirm/deny?

there was no remnants teaser, i do not know where that guy came up with it.  i am a little bummed there was no PWW, the new version of that (YUM) was the highlight of the show for me.

i heard no more new songs till chicago.

once again, i did not see a taper, but those fellas can be pretty sneaky.
**fingers crossed**

The Fela Kuti version from Roo 06 that I mentioned before is one, that's the only one ive heard where the first half was changed. The Roo 08 intro was more guitary than normal, but still pretty much the same. The t5 outro was more spacey and jammed out.

I think my highlight last night was Lowdown.  That was the first time that I had finally seen it... Then Butch Cassidy really surprised me. He told a story that he wrote Butch Cassidy in Lexington in his year or 2 at UK. Between that and the fact that they just released the t5 version, I guess it was expected, but still blew my mind that I got to see it. They didn't play It Beats 4 U with surprises me after T5 releases. Great set list all in all though.

Before the encore I looked at my lady and said "Wordless, Touch Me 1, Highly Suspicious, some random song, maybe Phone Went West, and One Big Holiday to finish it." I think that maybe Jim heard me and wanted to make me look smart so he played those songs and printed up a false set list real quick with PWW on it.
