The thing is, are you going to say you can't save room for friends that are coming later that you plan to sit with? Some people have to work during the day. I like having the spouses to come later with fresh food. Agreed that two people saving for ten might be a bit greedy.

I think once you get above the first couple of rows, saving ONE seat for somebody who couldn't wait in line is kosher. Down front, that is not very cool, but I bet you'd still get away with it. Penny has it right, and it'd much cooler if you buy beers for the peeps around you.

I just watched the video from that link and was amazed at how crazy some people are with those tarps. I've never seen that anywhere or at any concert I've been to. I hope you all don't have that happen to you at the MMJ show. I couldn't tell from the video but is there a pit or seats up close to the stage?

I have designated seats at RR and if someone tries to tarp my shit, it's on.  I will drag their hippie asses out of the venue by their fucking nappy dreadlocks.

OR, you could just say, hey, those are my seats, could you please move your tarp?   Much easier and less anger.

Your wife's on my whamo.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

yeah i don't think you wanna drag anybody out by any form of hair. plus, how could you assume that everyone at an MMJ show is a "hippie" with dreadlocks. I think that's super way off

The hell, are you some kind of hippie yourself, BH? "Hey man, like, my seats are under your most excellent tarp, could you be so kind as to to misappropriate someone else's location? Thanks, man!" Way too peaceful.  ;)

Oh, answering the Dude's question, there's no pit, the first row is as close as you get except for the VIP seating to the sides of the stage. Probably the only drawback at Red Rocks; even from the first row, you're a little removed.

Guys & Girls I was joking around.  I am a very polite person and will much too stoned to get into a physical altercation, much less my first physical altercation ever.

Although you were mistaken about one thing: "they" are the ones who don't want any by-the-hair dragging.  Damn hippies.
You need it.  That's for sure.

doesn't matter, some of us flew a long way, some people took off work for the day, i would say my tolerance extends to possibly a spouse or one person (provided they bring everyone around them a beer or snack to make up for them crowding your prime GA spot)..i think THAT is good GA etiquette...
i agree.
if i've got a person i'm saving a spot for in line i always tell the people waiting around me so they know it's not going to turn into a mob.

1 person in line becoming 10 is bad form.  this was a chronic problem in the T5 line.  if you want to pre-game, do it, but don't come up to the front of the line 10 minutes before doors and make someone be the jerk by letting you get in line.

now putting away my line-monitor hat & sash.

...I am hoping to get a t-shirt design off the ground if I can get more than an hour not at work, babysitting, shopping for a new car, work, or out drinking copious amounts of beer.
YES!  don't cut time from your beer drinking, tho.  QUALITY OF LIFE, KY!

P.S. My vacation was approved today so barring any suck-tacular travel plans I'll see you all there. Can't wait to see Crispy's magnificent dome bobbing in the crowd....will take me back to T5....
awesome!

Wow-heck of a discussion.

No one ever tarps in the reserved section. Why would they do that? Besides, there is a typically a rope across the 24th row, so you know where reserved starts. OTOH, if you are into MMJ enough to be reading this board, you will not be happy in the 24th row or higher. The rows are wide and 24 is like row 35 in a normal shed. A bit of breeze will definitely impact the sound the higher you go. But Reserved are OK to add to the GA mix. They don't check your tix except if there is a conflict over reserved.  However, definitely do not forget to climb up a ways during the evening to see the epic view of the Denver area's lights behind the stage; just don't watch the show from there.

I have certainly participated in this for jam band shows, but tarps are much rarer for other shows.

Me thinks some of your preconceptions about tarps are not quite accurate. First, it is only partially for saving space for later arrivals.  Typically, if used for that, it's a two or three for one ratio. For Wilco last year, I was with a buddy, and we saved room our wives, two friends, and my two kids, so that was 2 holding for a total of 8. BUT- we also headed for my favorite spot, which happens to be about the 8th row right next to the soundboard (why-that is, is another discussion). When we went in, the initial rush was for the first 5 rows, and a tarp probably would have been controversial, because there were not many tarps there for Wilco. We were fairly established with the tarp taped down before it was really too crowded.

I understand about  the fact most on this thread are coming from a great distance and want to sit close without tarps blocking off a bunch of space. Rest assured if you are willing to wait in line early enough you will get great GA spots. That's why I said about ten pages ago, the party is in the line, not the parking lot, for the hardcore. And I'll bet MMJ will not attract the early birds and intensity nearly as much as Widespread Panic. They sell out three nights in a row within a day every year. And typically the mad rush will consume the first few rows and holding that turf for more than a friend or two will be difficult. (More difficult is dealing with drunken crashers later).

Now having said that, if you are willing to sit up a few rows where tarps are less likely to be controversial, there are some nice perks.  When I go to jam band shows, I generally hang with a crew of 12-20 people, that are the same group for all the jam shows. We usually lay a couple of tarps over 3 or so rows. Rugs and blankets go on the tarp so it's comfortable if you want to go (dance) barefoot. During the show people generally treat the area like a party, moving about and grooving and sharing the vibe with different friends at different times. And frankly, it is less crowded and more comfortable. When you look out to the edges where the later arrivals are, they are jammed packed.

It sounds like at least twenty or more of you are very familiar with each other from traveling to other shows. I have similar long-term friendships with about 100+ Who "travelers". It will be great to meet so many of you in a similar fashion and connect you to your internet identities.

My point is, a coordinated effort by the people on this board could secure a similar kind of arrangement. Sort of establishing your own roll call section.  And since you will be all here at the same time, the tarps won't be used that much for saving space, but rather to make it a comfortable communal party area, that is not jam packed.

Just sayin'

I could not be more against this whole "tarp" thing and really hope that it's not like that at the MMJ show.  For me, it's simple - if you want a good GA spot, get there early..... saving spots and cutting in lines is for suckas.

Crispy

Hey, good info, Charles. I think we will end up with a healthy crowd of peeps all rocking and dancing and freaking out together in front, much like we did at T5, but with a lot more room in front and behind. The WIDE benches do make for a nice roomy environment but do cause the view to move backward in a hurry. I don't know if we'll be marking out territory, but it will be a party, no doubt about it!

But you're absolutely right. You guys camped out most of the day at T5 and the rest of us (10th Ave 10) were out and about and then got in the back of the line wherever we arrived. It's not cool to jump especially when people make it a point to get there early, grab a spot and hold it. Common concert etiquette. Same if you decide you MUST be on the rail an hour into the show and elbow your way forward. Jags.  ::)

remember the guy that politely rocked his way up to the rail just for "lay low" at T5 and then obediently shot back behind us after the song was over.. he said it was "his song"

that was awesome

Approved by the man himself, who found his way to the rail at T5 for HIS song.
