Yeah, just think, we coulda been friends for the past 25 years if we had met back then, weird!  How many of the same shows were we at?  Richard Thompson at the Fillmore in '88, Slims, Santa Rosa, all those Dead shows and who knows what else? Did you ever go see the Mother Hips?  They used to play Slims and the Last Day Saloon a lot.  Great American Music Hall, too.

Yes, I was at all the Thompson shows you mentioned.  Fillmore '88 was my first time seeing him.  Also pretty much every west cost dead show from the time I started college at UC Berkeley in the fall of 88 until I stopped going to shows regularly in the Vince period.

I think I saw the Mother Hips once, wasn't a fan.
My heart can't wait to meet you on the other side.

I was thinking about this late last night and you know, I have always felt kinda bad for Vince Welnick. From what I have been led to understand over the years, he was the second choice to replace Brent Mydland. I remember reading they were ready to bring in David Freiburg, who of course had been in Quicksilver and Jefferson Starship, but that Vince was picked because of his vocal harmonies and that it was a really rushed decision.

For me, he just didn't seen to click. I mean he definitely is a decent musician, but I still feel that (Hornsby aside) Mydland was the most versatile keyboard player the Dead ever had despite his many personal and drug related problems.

When you get a chance check out 3/31/87. A helluva night at the Philly Spectrum. The last of a three night Spring Spectrum run, and man were they on fire. The intensity, and pace of the second set still blows me away.

I'm listening to this right now, eric.  That's a fucking spry Franklin's Tower and I usually don't like that song that much because it can be plodding if Jerry isn't killing it.  On this version, he is!

Yeah, it seemed like Vince was a really rushed decision based on them not wanting to have to cancel the Europe 1990 tour, and thus needing to get a very quick replacement.

He is a good musician, but his little keyboard just sounded so empty compared to Brent's setup with the electric piano and organ.

We used to laugh at deadheads in the early 90's as you could practically make a drinking game out of people uttering the phrase "I think Vince is really coming into his own."

I feel sorry for him, too, as he had very tough shoes to fill and ultimately wasn't the right person for it.  The way I view the band once Vince stepped in is that I sort of stopped appreciating them at the level of the full band and listening to the whole package.  After Vince, I started just focusing on Bob, Jerry, and Phil instead of focusing on the whole band.

Youuuuuu better roll away....   Hope you like the rest of the show, and glad you're giving it a listen.

Jerry was killing it all night. They all were actually, one helluva show, and one that always sticks out in my memory bank. I believe it was also simulcast on WMMR FM in Philly. I know one of the three nights was, and pretty sure it was this night.

I'm not a fan of many things "Philly" but it is a great rock and roll town. Gotta give the crowds there their props, and in turn most bands always seem to really bring it there as well. The Dead were no exception to that. Saw many a hot show there, and we didn't miss too many.

Yeah, the whole show is ripping, thanks for the suggestion, eric!  I've also been listening to two nights in Hartford, CT earlier in the week, 3-26-87 and 3-27-87, both of those shows are on fire, too.  I have a whole new appreciation for Spring 1987 now, thanks!!!

Jesus Christ and Holy Shit, this has got to be the best Touch of Grey ever!  Just listen to the East Coast crowd ROAR at the "we will survive" parts!

Yeah I decided to buy this. It looks like DP4 is coming out on vinyl next month and of course it will be a fortune.

This inspired me to dig around in my vinyl tonight and I retrieved my Europe '72 purchased when it first came out - one of my favorites spun many times in the day.  I bought the cd a while back so neglected my vinyl version for too long.  Looks in great condition with the original booklet.  I'll be spinning it this weekend for the first time in a long time.
Thanks, John, for bringing this back into play.

Just finished listening to my old vinyl copy of Europe '72.  I had almost forgotten how good this album is.  It is quite a workout juggling all 6 sides; heck, I need the exercise

I was looking through the picture booklet that's still in great shape and at the end it had two coupons - one for a "fully illustrated" Grateful Dead songbook for Workingman's Dead and American Beauty AND the other for Grateful Dead t-shirts.

The special songbook offer expired Dec. 31, 1972 but there is no expiration date on the t-shirt coupon.  They are $3.95 plus 30 cents for handling (Cash, Check or Money Order).  Maybe I should put in an order.

Uh oh. Something's up with Bob. Sounded really off, then apparently collapsed/fell on stage at the Cap Theater tonight. Mid 2nd set. Phil said he strained his shoulder earlier in the day, and doctor loaded him up on pain meds.

They helped him off the stage, and looks like the band will finish the show without him.

Godspeed Bob,and hope he's all good for their show in AC on Saturday. I've got a bunch of friends going, and would be there myself if JJ wasn't playing in Philly.
