MY MORNING JACKET - Circuital (ATO 2011th)
- Drazen Smaranduj
Monday, 30 May 2011

Why does my mind blow to bits every time they play that song? It's just the way that he sings, not the words that he says, or the band. Im in love with this soul, it's a meaning that I understand.

"The Way That He Sings" At Dawn (2001).

What if after listening to a couple still have no idea what it is, but you say that tingling feeling of comfort will soon walk through life with a new favorite band. I know it sounds childish, but the 2003rd When the My Morning Jacket first spin in my headphones do not sound so close. Their second album "At Dawn" is the time for me was a real bomb, and the third "It Still Moves" I made that same year after high school again act as a neanderthal die hard fan. Today I am a bit cautious, but I suspect that, despite the crowd of good music that we use daily to most of us know how it works - each new edition of your favorite band in the world to follow in good times and bad.

But do not worry, though you may have in the wrong hands subjective, the sixth album for Jim James and the team is far from feature-length confusion mixed in the previous "Evil Urges". And if we take into account that most fans felt safer after the announcement that the band will return to the older sonic formulas, then the new "Circuital" total surprise. After all, what exactly does that mean the old sound? Lo-fi stoner country and reverb spiritual delgirl dream pop with "The Tennessee Fire" and "At Dawn"; marathon southern jammanje and headbanganje with "It Still Moves," in which intertwine The Grateful Dead, Eagles, Beach Boys, Black Sabbath and Neil Young with Crazy Horse; unexpected synthesizers, R & B and reggae & dub hits with "Z", or cuspajz with "Evil Urges" on which both go Prince, prog and Americana?

No matter what, "Evil Urges" brings together some great songs and what some fans would prefer to gloss over the fact that their album is on the bottom of the list, tracks Jimovog remorse for the bad reviews of previous albums can be recognized from the very beginning of the new album. So it is not surprising that the band for the purpose of recording new material again returned to his hometown where the hi-tech studio decided to replace the local sports hall of the church. Organize themselves in a circle, filmed nearly all live and recorded all on analog tape.

So the new album were not fully recycled, but some famous sound from an eclectic discography, but, with few exceptions, in a unique and compact way round everything worked so far. "Circuital" represents a successful resume that included everyone in the circle are on the same wavelength. After all, what the cover of the new album looks like a retro-futuristic compass is essentially a "magical" about the green that gives an indication that you have found the desired station on the old Slivertone radio receivers.

On the newly discovered members of the intimacy of the band is certainly influenced by last year's live project 5 Nights - 5 Albums - Terminal 5 when they are in New York every night playing one album in the discography. Must be taken into account that from the very beginning of the band along with Jim James only stayed bassist Tom Blankensip and that Patrick Hallahan, Bo Koster and Carl Broemel for the first time get a chance to be in its original format detailed undergo early editions. Maybe it was a kind of delayed initiation of a collective band.

"Circuital" lasts 45 minutes and after the first hearing does not bring anything like rasturačinama such as "One Big Holiday," "Anytime" and "Remnants." There is no marathon riding and rasviravanja known from things like "Run Through", "Lay Low" or "Dancefloors. But although the album constantly echo the famous tricks, almost all the material flows into one with one foot to kulesrskom and seductive atmosphere.

Remember how we were plunged into Jim's second album with the same song, "At Dawn": All your life is obscene! / Forget the papers, forget your musical dreams! / But that's when my knife rises / Their life ends and my life starts again! He knew that he has hands and My Morning Jacket is the story shortly after the album finally rolled. Introductory "Victory Dance" from the new album is a continuation of his ancient battles with other people's expectations and personal musical demons. But this time it is not desperate. Moreover, this time much before the end of the song shows its own strength, celebrated their own "mistakes" and calls us all together in a celebratory victory dance. Immediately behind the original sound of gong Jim voice mimics the sound of fanfares (!?!?) that we slowly introduced into the song that will be listening to a few most powerful on the album. However, a celebratory dance is just beginning with "Circuital" that emerges from the dark sound tracks, passing the previous confessions of a band which was again stepped on the ball, but who will never give up anything so far achieved. Well anyway you cut it / We're just spinning around / Out on the circuit / Over The Hollow Grounds / heading right back in the same place / That we started out ... Just after these verses moving beautiful guitar solo ala Neil Young and his Crazy Horse.

The following chorus, "The Day Is Coming" soon becomes an obsession. Imagine being able to handle infectious MMJ "Two Weeks" by Grizzly Bear, or better yet, do the following - arrange in a play list in order: "Off the Record", "The Day Is Coming" and the end of the legendary "Phone Went West". Mini MMJ dub reggae mix!

"Wonderful (The Way I Feel)" is a little older and a typical example of the classic My Morning Jacket formula from the beginning of his career - Jim James and acoustic guitar (in the background is Ben Sollee with her cello). The only thing is the sound and subject matter closer to the newer stuff like "Knot Comes Loose" and "Librarian". Jim's utopian fantasy is of course far from the dark insights and touching confession with the inimitable "Death Is The Easy Way" and "I Needed It Most." Next "Outta My System" sounds like jostle ala "Into the Woods" from the album "Z" is it still remain in kulerskoj from one foot to the atmosphere.

Oh-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-whoa-yeah-yeah-yeah-yay-ohhhhh ... Children's Choir takes us through the most unusual song on the album - "Holdin 'On To Black Metal". Virtually sung over the music track "E-Saew Tam Punha Huajai" which is located on the compilation Siamese Soul: Thai Pop Spectacular 1960s-80s, "Black Metal" should not be a lure for indie teams that might have expected diversion similar to that in 2009. Phil Elverum was performed on the album "Wind's Poem," your project Mount Eerie. In short, no trace of metal, but everything else is pure entertainment.

"First Light" sounds like something that would be Wayne Coyne, Michael Ivins and Steven Drozd back on the ball after an experiment called "Embryonic" and "You Want to Freak Out" is the best possible modern tribute to what they are doing the Lips "Clouds Taste Metallic "back in 1995th

"Slow Slow Tune" is a "Blue Moon" ala Jim James. Doomerski slow lullaby, which is celebrated through zajebantski tone bliss. Last "Movin Away" is infinitely sad "Dondante" and "Strangulation" which closes "Z" and "At Dawn", but it is one of the most intimate by Jim James wrote today. Waltz, which should not be allowed to combine with a song like "Good Woman" by Cat Power. Only if you really should not break ties.

Notwithstanding the occasional unexpected moves, "Circuital" the most compact and material that are My Morning Jacket released in his career, which is a perfect circle closes and you are repeatedly makes the same path. Without skipping and cheating. Everything is in place. We all realize that they could pull a little more, but obviously they are aware that so upset the balance of infection that is spread slowly from one foot to.

In addition, the album celebrates another balancing - The luster of youth versus security married to Jim sings in "Outta My System". It seems that he is ready for everything, but we are constantly urged to be a child in his most important link.

... I am older, day by day / Still going back to my childhood way ...

... I will never grow older / At least not in my mind ...

... Still holdin 'on to Black Metal ...

Let's rock!
The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

"My Morning Jacket has been the most powerful live rock 'n' roll outfit for a while now, and the band's best record was the two-disc concert album Okonokos.... Until now."

>Geez
Finally a reviewer that smelled out the Ramones from Outta My System.  Everyone I talked to and every review was Beach Boys this, Beach Boys that when everything from the melody, chord changes and particularly Jim's voice screams the Ramones.  I love the beat and sounds that tickle through that song but someone help me...those lyrics :embarassed:
i'll admit i'm not well versed in the ramones and have no reason to doubt what you say, but surely you can understand all the beach boys comparisons.  or have you ever heard the beach boys?

While parts of Victory Dance elicit thoughts of Sergio Leone's spaghetti western soundtracks - and something about Out of My System reminds me of the Beatles - I wouldn't have made the Beach Boys association.  I probably won't be able to do otherwise now.

What are the Beach Boys?   ;)
I get the comparisons for sure Slappy.  It's always fascinating to me how we absorb new music and the initial comparisons that they elicit.  This song just reminded me of a half tempo Ramones without the thrashing guitars.  Jim's voice is eerily similar here.

I think Outta My System is a long lost brother to Good Vibrations. Imagine some Beach Boys harmonies in there and you have one of the best Beach Boys' tunes I've heard.

Outta My System is to the Beach Boys what Long Cool Woman In A Black Dress is to Creedence or On The Dark Side is to Bruce Springsteen.

Yeah the pitchfork review was mostly positive but I was a little upset they didn't give it the Best new music tag

I don't get the Beach Boys comparison, at all. Yes, I am very familiar with the BB's. I hate that reviewers through comparisons like that in. Same for EU. I didn't get Prince at all in listening to EU.

Bob said the BB thing too, immediately upon hearing it -- and he has never looked at this thread.  I kinda got it at the first listen, but upon a few more listens, not so much.

surprisingly pleased with Pitchfork's review.  while it likely won't make their end of the year best lists, the reviewer clearly was pleased with what she heard and seems to know something about the band.  she's been at p-fork for a while and is usually fair and balanced.  thankfully, they didn't hand the review over to that ian cohen guy after his "yacht pop" bullshit he dropped on evil urges.  i'll take a 7.2 any day.  i think Z only scored in the 7s with them and we all know how good that record was and what it grew into in the live forum.

All albums and EP's excluding (Celebracion and Evil Urges) have been 7.0 or higher.  ISM 8.3, TTF 8.0, and Split 8.5.  But like you I was expecting them to pan the album like Evil Urges.  Pleasantly surprised.

This is perfection though:

"Like nearly all of their studio albums, Circuital may not reach the heights of the band's live show-- a good MMJ concert can recalibrate your gut, it can change you-- but it's a remarkably solid step for a band that's never stopped evolving."

Sometimes when I get in my zone, you'd think I was stoned, but I never as they say, touched the stuf

Q-tips (cotton swabs) are used for cleaning the ear canal (although medically discouraged) to avoid bacterial build up that can cause infection, thus, a picture of a Q-tip to suggest that someone can't hear is a dated and innaccurate depiction. I would have said something like, "Take the earplugs out of your ears" or maybe "What? Are you wearing sound protection equipment?" If you're going to go visual, you could use ear plugs or ear protection devices, but you'll need a catchy phrase b/c it won't translate. I have an example below:

Maybe take these off!

If that doesn't work, I would have said something like, "Yo, you're a dumb ass."  fyi
