Ok guys it has been almost 3 years since you have visited lovely South Florida, in fact the date was 8-29-08.  What a magical night, it was my firsties seeing them and I was right in front of Carl and @ the end of the show he tossed his guitar pick @ me which I have framed with the ticket and the beautiful poster of that show.  I am just really bummed that there are no dates so far for the entire state.  I will drive to Orlando, Tampa, wherever just come down here ya'll.  I want to use my Roll Call pre-sale dammit :)

Anywho, I realize alot of bands don't make the trek down here and that sucks, I got to drive to Orlando in October to see the Arctic Monkeys, which is cool I am always down for a road trip.
Please Jim and the Gang reconsider coming down here.  Think of it as a little vacation for you guys, you can go to Disney World, Busch Gardens, The Florida Keys, or just hang at the beach.
Yikes!

I'm traveling 24-hours to Colorado to see them, so go to Atlanta or Tuscaloosa. I feel like South Florida isn't super accessable, seeing as its a peninsula.

e wind is right, it seems like an inconvenient stop on a tour. Also it was a 6 year gap until last year that MMJ played Pittsburgh, and now they're playing there 2 years in a row. I wouldn't give up hope, I waited double what you did.
That's motherfuckin' John Oates!

plus im pretty sure they played florida in 2010

St. Augustine is not South Fla. which is what he was requesting. I find it hard to believe a major band would skip Tampa/Miami area because of geography. It is only a days drive from other places they play, and it is clearly closer to Atlanta than London is.

e_wind

Well their tour isn't AL > ATL > London in a 3 night run. Jacket is out there, and if they aren't plAying your backyard it doesn't make it impossible to see them.  What I meant by accessible is the fact that people can't  travel there as easily from all directions. Also remember, they didn't play their home town for 2 years twice, yet in that time they played NYC in that 2 years I believe 7 times. I don't think it's that there's no "love" it just doesn't fit their plan

Actually, the thread suggests "Florida Love" and the post is talking about "South Florida" and also states that "Orlando" would work, which is not south Florida. So, to summarize, you got a request for South Florida Love, Central Florida Love and Florida Love.

I hope Eweezy can clear all this up; this is important.
Be the cliché you want to see in the world.

Since they are playing venues under 3000 seats, they should not be making choices based on the logistics of fans driving from other states. South FLA has one of the densest populations in the country, so from the bands perspective, it could easily fit into their plans if they want. I have no horse in this race, it just seems wierd they have played in my neighborhood 3 times in 11 months, and none in Miami/Tampa? (Logistically speaking, 2 weeks between LA and SB is not exactly efficient travel planning.)

Has anyone considered the fact that south Florida this time of year is might fucking hot?  Maybe they'll come down when the mecury does, too.

If you worry about MMJ not making it to your neck of the woods, plan a vacation around a show in a part of the country you've always wanted to see.  Make it a two-fer.  If you're single, all the more reason for a roadtrip without spouse/kids to attend.

Keep it inexpensive by driving, camping, or combine it with a business trip or other travel.

I saw three shows in 4 nights and 5 days for $1000- airfare, car rental, hotel, tickets.  That's a bargain!

Montreal to Ottawa was 3 days, 2 nights for $500- hotel, gas (13 hours total driving), tickets.

EDIT: Meant to mention we planned to visit my wife's family outside Chicago this summer, so I timed it with Lollapalooza.  Taking her brother along while G'ma and Papa watch our daughters means free babysitting!  Same trip PLUS MMJ!  Points scored all around!

It can be done.
The fact that my heart's beating is all the proof you need.

This is what I'm saying! I'm going to MMJ @ St. Louis -> Flaming Lips @ Red Rocks --> MMJ @ Red Rocks all for under 1000$! It was 230$ for round trip, we're staying with a friend in St. Louis, we're splitting a hotel for 2 nights between 2 in Denver (100$ a piece), then staying with friends in Boulder for 5 nights. I'm getting a full fledge vacation with 3 awesome concerts for under 400$ logistics wise, and then what ever I spend on posters, food and drink, and activities, I don't think I'll break my limit of 600$ spending money.

Though I have seen MMJ/Jim 4 times in Louisville in less than a year, I've also have/will have travelled to Columbus, Nashville, Chicago x2, Cincinatti, Colorado, St. Louis, Alabama, and Atlanta in the same year (plus a little) period. I work in a restaurant delivering pizzas, and have been saving money since christmas to go to music festivals/out of state MMJ shows this summer. Like aMD said in a different thread, they're out there, you just have to find 'em.

Hell, people from Europe that post on this forum travelled across countries boarders to see em this month!

I hope this and John's statement can be a little motivation to go to them.

And about the accessability.... you are right about the 3000 capacity theater thing, Rincon, but for whatever reason I've led myself to understand that South Florida gets skipped by many bands on many tours. Jacket has been doing a lot of 3 night runs this tour, and in order to fit in Miami I feel like they would have to play Atlanta, take a night off for traveling, play Miami, take a night off for traveling, then play south carolina. Not that thats impossible, but maybe it just didn't fit  their schedule. I've never booked a tour, so I'm only basing this off what I make up in my head.

As one who works in Miami and lives in Ft. Lauderdale I can certainly understand the op's frustration.
Many musical acts who are not originally from the state do skip the southern tip of our great state.
The big bands will always come (U2, Pearl Jam, Green Day, etc) because they've got the big tour budget (most will usually start or end their tour legs here..although that is not always the case)

I admit that I feel jealously for those who live in other parts of the country and get more jacket love than we do down here.  It is not as easy (time-wise) to get out of the state and into another, as it is for folks in the northeast and other places.  It takes me about 6-7 hour just to get out of FL from down here.  So, if I ever want to leave, I most likely have to fly (which these days costs just a bit of coin)

The last time that they were down here in so. fla was late august of 2008.  I took 3 of my friends as first timers and they had a great time.  It was at the Jackie Gleason theater, which is a cool venue.  The crowd was late arriving, but that was fine with me, as I was front row center, and the show was fantastic.

To the original poster, I will say to you, that I share your pain.  However, it is just one of those things that we south floridians must accept.  they did play in st. augustine last year, and I took two days off of work to drive the 5 hours up ther, sawhe show, and then drive back the next day.

I've also flown to NYC 3 different times just to see them.  Its a pain in the ass to do, but it is what it is.

I certainly would love to see the guys add another florida date (i've been wanting to take my gf and dad to a show, and it would be the perfect time) but if not, then I'll just have to wait, or book a flight and go see them somewhere else

Its like a trade off though, you all dont get as many concerts, but you do get to live in Southern Florida, which i feel like would be a nice place to live.

It's not just south Florida. Florida, in general, pretty much gets the shaft when it comes to live music.  In all fairness, though, I think we're pretty notorious for pretty weak turnouts.

This is what it is.  It's a shame, but we don't show up for anything except Gator football (and only when they are good).  It's no hotter down here this time of year than it is in the north - you guys have been plenty hotter on many days this summer.  It's not that logistically hard to play Florida.  After your Atlanta show, head down 75 to Tampa (7 hours drive), then on to Miami (5 hours), hit Orlando on the way out of the state (4 hours), and then maybe stop in Jax (3 to 4 hours).

Sorry Jon, missed P'cola again - but so long as you guys choose to remain in the Central time zone you're gonna have to go to New Orleans for your shows.  There are actually great venues in Tally and in Gainesville as well and I bet MMJ would draw well in 2 very big college towns.

So we can only blame ourselves.
I'm not saying it's easy...walking into sweet oblivion.

wakebord

when i was at UF, Band of Horses played and it was packed; people were trying to scalp tickets to the show.  Albeit, it was at Common Grounds (which, sadly, closed this year) - not a big venue.  I don't doubt that MMJ could sell out a show in Gainesville.  But MMJ could destroy the O'Dome - it only holds about 12,000 people; less for a concert.  Even better the University Auditorium, which is one of the most beautiful, historic buildings on campus.  If they played in the Swamp, I'd probably lose my shit.  I'm a huge Gator fan and if MMJ played in my favorite football stadium, my life would be complete.

But in all seriousness, you pretty much have to play at least two shows to make a Florida trip worthwhile, otherwise, you are out a day of travel if you just come into the state to play in Tampa, Miami or Orlando.

beatnikdaddio

a lot of people are quick to blame a band for not coming to a certain locale, but many people don't have an understanding of the way band touring works; the blame is on your area promoters, not the band you want to see that never comes.

when a band begins to schedule a tour, a notice is sent out to area promoters that "XYZ BAND" is available for booking from "X month" to "Z month" in a certain region. the responsibility now lies with your area promoters to take the gamble to put up the money, book the band, pay to rent a venue in your area for the band to play. all that money upfront is the promoter's gamble that they'll sell enough tickets to make a profit after paying the band, the venue, the insurance, security, etc... a risky proposition in today's economy. if area promoters don't book, the band doesn't come.

e_wind

Well Jim said they handpicked the theaters for this tour though.

beatnikdaddio

well, in that case... blame away!  ;)

(but, generally, that's how tour locations get booked)

That is exactly my point thank you.  Unfortunately me and the wife just purchased a house and we cannot just make purchases to see them in other parts of the country.  Hence the reason why I said no Florida Love.  Not hating on the band either, totally understand if they as a band decided not to come to Florida.  Just saying that I am just as jealous of everywhere else in the country where they are touring.  Just noting also that the Arctic Monkeys are doing like a 15 date tour in the US and somehow are playing twice in Florida that is all.
Peace love and chicken grease to all.
Yikes!
