slappymoe.... that is some bad timing.  I hope it didn't effect the rest of your night.  I would have been bummed about those 45 seconds.
nope, still had a blast.  hell, not sure i would have stopped jim had i been there.

for one thing, i'm not even sure what i'd say, aside from some lame fanboy "gee, you're my hero" nonsense.  maybe if i carried my guitar with me everywhere i go, i could ask him to show me a few chords.

and though i'm sure he knows it comes with the territory, i would imagine jim would like to be able to go out in public and enjoy his evening without being hounded by fans...or the sisters of fans.

maybe if there was some way to quickly communicate telepathically......"i know who you are, i am a huge fan, but i choose to respect your privacy.  have a nice evening."

I'm going to see Springsteen tomorrow night for the first time.  I've never been more than casually interested in The Boss, but the legendary live show reputation has made me finally pull the trigger.  We are on the GA floor, but probably won't get there in time to be in the front section.

A Springsteen fanatic friend sent me a stack of discs to prep me.  I'm finding there's a bunch of songs I never really paid much attention to that I now hope I get to hear tomorrow.

I'm going in with few expectations and in a good headspace to rock out and have a good time.  Getting pretty excited!

same experience with me, Shug--thanks to ericm and headhunter i discovered Bruce late in life and went to my first 3 bruce shows this past year...not many people i'd see in an arena setting, but you definitely get your money's worth...my old roommate also turned me on to Tracks and a lot of stuff i'd never gave much attention to...the real doozy was when HH showed me a concert video from before the BTR tour...as a child of the 80s, i was turned off..but was converted this past year..

have a great time!
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

Thanks!  I will report back.

Enjoy the show Shug. I think you're in for a doozy. It was originally the tour finale, but they added the Mexico City show a little while back. Still the last US show of the tour, so no telling where it'll go. I hope you get a few of the tunes you talked about.

Say hi to my brother for me.    He and my sister-in-law will also be at the show tomorrow night.   They moved out there a couple of years ago, and will be driving up from the Tucson area.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the show.

I decided to not look at this week's set lists so I'm surprised.  #1 on my wishlist is Rosalita, but don't tell me if they played it last night or something!   Maybe a Christmas tune?  We'll see, I'll be happy with whatever he plays, can't wait!  Thanks for the good wishes!

Bruce is a rock 'n' roll preacher and he made me a believer!  We had a great time at the show.  We were on the GA floor, standing only.  The crowd in the seats stood the whole time, too.  A bunch of good people primed to have a good time, didn't see any jerkish behavior, just good vibes amongst people who like to rock out and sing along.

Man, things started out strong when the crowd sung the entire first verse of Hungy Heart and Bruce went crowd surfing by the fourth song in.  And then followed it with Prove It All Night with long intro, which sounded like Because The Night to me.  I was surprised how many (short) guitar solos Bruce took, I thought Nils would take most of them.  Bruce can solo, pretty brief and tastefully, but really good.  He kinda went off on the long intro, though, excellent!  Trapped was great, too, so it was a strong, impressive first part of the set.  He brought up a lot of kids throughout the show, which was touching and really cool and he let people come up on the catwalk during Santa Claus and that was cool, as well.

The emotional highlight for me, though was when Sam Moore, (from Memphis Stax group Sam and Dave) sang along on an old R&B tune (maybe Call Me, not sure of the title).  I have a deep deep love for Stax, Motown and Atlantic soul from the 60s and hearing Sam at 82 still in good voice, smiling away, with Bruce holding him up as the national treasure that he is really got to me, I was bawling like a baby.  That moment, along with the whole revival vibe of a Bruce show opened me up and out came the flood.  I love it when that happens, when rock 'n' roll music becomes a powerful transformative experience and not just a fun night out.  The Rising carried on with that feeling and it stayed there through to the tribute to Clarence and Danny in 10th Ave.  We were pretty close to the catwalk and it was great to see Bruce emotional from so close up.  Rosalita would've capped the night and put it over the edge, but it was not to be.  Just another reason to go see him some more next time, right?  A great night of rock 'n' roll!

wow Shug, you caught a great show. glad you loved it.  Eric M and I have both been to many many shows (i'm well past 100) and there are few who can move a crowd and play for hours on end until the audience is exhausted like the Boss.

Bruce is really a treasure and every music fan should see him play live even if they don'r really know the music.

glad you had such a good time & experience.

Thanks!  I looked at a few setlists this AM, would've loved to have heard Spirit In The Night or Because The Night, Darkness At The Edge of Town, and stuff like that, but I'm not complaining.  I dig that Bruce does what Tom Petty does not: mix up his setlists, play rarities, not play every radio song every night.  I'd be ecstatic if Petty did that and I'd see him multiple nights on each tour like Bruce fans do.  As it is, I won't even pay to see Petty anymore cuz its almost the same damn show for the past 15 years!  The price is that you may not hear your favorite song if you only go see one show.  I have no problem with that at all.

Anyway,  I was cruising around reading Springsteen stuff today and I saw this in a Little Steven interview and thought it was so so great.

You've talked about the E Street Band being so close now, but you quit the band back in the Eighties, and Bruce later broke the group up for 10 years. How do those two decisions look to you now?
There is no doubt that those two things were mistakes. I tell everybody, if you've got a band that works, it's a miracle. It's never going to be perfect, but if it works on some level, hold on to it with both hands and don't ever let it go. Bands should never break up. I had this conversation with Bruce. One of the reasons why we got back together is I really feel a moral obligation. You ask people to fall in love with you. To need you. To want you. To buy your records and come see you. You have an emotional contract with people. To break up is to violate that contract. That relationship has now been restored, and we are feeling it more than ever.

This one's for Penny, HeadHunter, and Tired Eyes. Man time flies.....hard to believe it's been almost a year since we got to see this great show at MSG. I can still hear how loud the crowd was that night, and seemed to be singing every word as loud as they could.

It comes through great in this video of a near perfect performance of probably my all time favorite Bruce tune.

Oh yeah, Penny, oh yeah.    I think any man who's been away from the woman he loves can relate to this song. I mean who wouldn't drive all night just to buy her some shoes, and taste her tender charms!

This tune always played like a bit of a lullaby to me, especially when the Big Man comes in for that classic sax solo.   Bruce has got so many gems in his catalog, and this is definitely one. I'm glad you're finding them, and liking them too.

Here's another, but in a much different style. Heard some rumors he'll either do something solo after this tour, or possibly put this band together for a second go round. Either way, I'm there, but I'd  love to see a Seeger Sessions Band show.

Thanks for the post Eric.  Some of those mellow tunes from The River (like Drive All Night) are (imo) the most under-rated of Springsteen's career.  Beautiful stuff and just mesmerizing live.

You got it Jeff.

Totally agree about those River tunes.  I can't ever get enough of listening to sides 3/4 or cd2. Was one of the lucky ones to catch the River tour, and see the album performed in order at MSG in 09.  One of my favorite Bruce shows ever.

Spinning The River tonight and smiling in a big way.

Thanks Eric for putting me in the mood.  Damn this is good stuff.

Well, I just revived the thread,    Christine was the one who set the River mood!   Spinning The River is a great way to spend the evening. I always though sides 1/2 or cd1 was a great road tripping listen, while 3/4 cd2 was great for kicking back, and enjoying some good company.

Here's one for Christine, and it sucks  Essentials is not available on vinyl!
