It most likely wont be a live band but him up there making the stuff(not as much prerecorded as most). I am not a bigfan of electronic music but think it is fun and interesting. Caught Bonobo twice and while its nothing to get worked up over it will be a chiller jazzier vibe w/more dancier stuff than the links posted.

Beats Antique (has been opening up for bassnectar and touring on their own) is by far the most interesting 'do not miss' of the newer 'ravier' stuff. All live instruments(well played and diverse), a belly dancer, and ive even seen them come out to cirque du soleit trapeeze artists before at a late night show. If you can be close enough to see them make their music do not turn it down.

They played the smaller stage across from the Bud Light Stage at Lollapalooza last summer, just after Ween and just before MMJ.  I only got a short taste before abandoning my wife and brother-in-law to the mud pit for the pending Jacket set, but was intrigued.

Flight is booked!

New York (LGA) to Louisville (SDF)  07/13/12 10:00 am - 12:30 pm

Louisville (SDF) to New York (LGA)  07/16/12 7:05 am - 9:03 am

Cannot wait to experience the LGA clusterfuck extravaganza!  It was almost 300 bucks less per person to fly out of there, so I am rollin the dice on this one! Can't wait.
I land 10 minutes ahead of you, so maybe we can coordinate a trip to Galt.

That sounds great!! We got a rental car, so as long as our flights are on time, we will be happy to give you a lift!

I think I get in around noon as well. We'll coordinate rideshares when the dates get closer! I still haven't gotten my ticket...debating VIP vs. GA. What say all ye?
Excellent, same offer to you Sass, we will have the wheels, so we will be in touch after landing.
As for the VIP, I haven't jumped at that yet.  We got GA tix and the Roll Call package thingy.

cool. i like it. i've been trying to read up on the artists, and this and flying lotus seem to be the electronic music i enjoy the most. i just can't really get excited about seeing flying lotus. watching a guy dj just does nothing for me. i feel like i could put some visuals on my flat screen and blast his record on my stereo and get a very similar experience.

this guy bonobo on the other hand, i hear he often performs with a live band. if this music is actually played live, as opposed to being pre-recorded and mixed (or whatever the electronic artists do) i can really see myself digging his set. good music. actually sounds more like jazz than techno if that's what he's categorized as.

The thing about most of these electronic acts is that they are not simply "pushing play."  I'm not too sure about bassnectar, but i know that bonobo and flying lotus are both constructing things as they go.  They rehearse for this like one would rehearse on an instrument.. just a different instrument, really.  A Trak is highly talented as well.

And it never hurts to have something like this...

JohnnY i recall more banjo and violin than drums. Hard to find video since everyone films tha dancers...

I'm with you Luna. I caught Beats twice at Waka and it was amazing. That's coming from someone who cannot stand electronic music. Plus Zoe is smokin'

Yeah, I couldn't find a better video from Lolla, though I never really "saw" them, just heard it as I was establishing myself in the pit for MMJ.  Looks like I missed some erotic gas masking!

They're nuts. The two dudes play drums, guitars, banjos, violins, sitars, and possibly some other stringed instruments. Meanwhile there is a background electronic beat, meanwhile there is a sexy broad belly dancing, playing a bass drum sometimes, wearing animal masks, etc. they're really interesting.

MMJCOBRA

anyone know anything about the 2 new adds?

One of them is Grimes and I'm really digging her last album.  Reminds me of a peppier verision of a sunny day in glasgow.

I've never been to Forecastle or Bonnaroo or anything like this, can anyone comment on the stage sizes? Will the smaller bands play on smaller stages? A more intimate kinda setting?

Festival shows, IMO, are less intimate. Usually the crowds for the shows are bigger because there are folks traveling from all over. That being said, never underestimate the surprise factor that festivals provide

And yes, there are smaller stages for smaller bands. Forevastle has 4, I believe. Bonnaroo has like 5 or 6

Crap.. if MMJ really does play 3 hours, will I have to miss Bonobo and/or Galactic? Probably. :(

Thankfully Friday and Sunday don't pose that issue.. Wilco is going up against Neko Case (or maybe after her??), and I've not heard enough of her music to care if I miss her. I'm gonna use most of the festival to find new music, like the Kentucky bands that are on the undercard of Friday. Never heard of Sleeper Agent, Nerves Junior, or Wax Fang before but have enjoyed all I've heard through Spotify.

I think the only 100% must-see bands for me right now are MMJ, Wilco, Tanlines, Flying Lotus, and those aforementioned Kentucky bands. I've heard the well-known indie bands like Beach House and Atlas Sound might not be super great live, so I'll see how I feel about it when I get there. Probably still gonna see them anyhow, if only because Forecastle 2012 will be my first concert of any kind.

What a great introduction to live music, especially losing your concert virginity to a weekend with MMJ, Wilco, etc.

I reallllllyyy doubt MMJ will be opposed. I don't think you'll have to worry about any interference there. If it's your first MMJ show, you're in for a treat. 3 hr MMJ show isn't that crazy of an idea, so be prepared for it.
