I fell in love with MMJ after seeing this performance of War Begun. There may be better versions of it, but I think Jim killed it on this solo.

Still waiting for my first War Begun in person.... please!

Good call. That's definitely the version of War Begun that made me fall in love with the song

Nashville, summer 2008.  War Begun.  If memory serves correct, it was one of the first shows they played after Evil Urges came out and they hadn't played War Begun in several years.  The riverfront went NUTS when they started playing this.  The fireworks from the football game across the river were the icing on the cake - starting as the song was unfolding into this beautiful jam.  I get all giddy just thinking about it.

If there's a full video of the song out there, could someone please post it?

The best, most memorable Dondante I saw.

Tuesday August 17, 2010 at Charter One Pavilliion.  As one fan put it after the show, it was his favorite part and when he looked around he realized he was not the only one crying.

This was a great version. This Lolla set was a good one to be at! I wish they would have thrown a few more goodies in there though

Was hopeful to see a special appearance of Jim this year.. :(

Do You remember the "Rollin Back" opener tease!?! from that Charter One Pavilion (Chicago,IL) 8/17/10.
It was a full on 30-45 seconds of "Rollin back" with the "AAAHHH (vocals)>Guitar intro" then they just pulled the rug out, right before YIM would have sung "Just in the nick of time, etc..." Then they went straight into "The Way He Sings"(Also a pretty cool opener! And a Killer show!)...

Biggest tease EVER :) I still don't think I've gotten over it...?

Lay Low from the Randolph Street Festival (June 18, 2005)

I think this might be the only time Lay Low has been the opener... the recording isn't great.. but jim's voice and the guitars are unbelievably good!!

https://ia600201.us.archive.org/9/items/mmj2005-06-18/mmj2005-06-18d1t01_vbr.mp3

i think they might have been "under the influence" because jim's banter throughout this set is very out there. after lay low he commented about how today they had the best sound check of any band of all time in the history of the universe. later on he talked about something with a kitten being beautiful.

Setlist:
Laylow
Mahgeetah
Lowdown
How Do You Know
Golden
I Will Sing You Songs
Tonight I'll be Staying Here with You
Off the Record
The Way that He Sings
Don Dante
Run Thru

That's so funny, in a good way. That was my very first MMJ show. If I remember correctly there was a storm coming, so there were these great thunderhead clouds coming in with sun rays shooting through them right behind the stage. MMJ finished and it started POURING rain a little while after they finished. GREAT FIRST SHOW!

At tippitoes:  I remember the opening of the show I kept thinking I must have been confused because the song I thought I was hearing suddenly was a different song.  I thought it was my imagination, and never even thought to check my brain against the set list.

Gotta go with Dondante at Red Rocks Amp in Colorado.  The venue is so great and its arguably their best song.  Good stuff

tippitoes22

Yeh, Im a huge Dondonte fan, Red Rocks is one of the best venues in the country, and those shows were FUCKIN GAME CHANGERS!!!, but the "everything changes" part kinda gave me a weird vibe after the Jason Molina news.

Again just one guys opinion....

This is really really hard...If I had to pick a live moment that stuck out to me it would definitely be Bonnaroo 2006....Loving Cup into the Easy Morning Rebel...it was amazing...The Port Chester Evelyn when Jim looked right at us during the 1-2-1-2-3-4 count and noticed we were counting with him and then he smiled really big...that has become one of the main parts of that song now, especially at shows like PC or OBH where you have such a huge gathering of hardcore fans that know what's coming next pretty much all the time

PC's Evelyn is the version by which all versions should be measured.
What's in here won't disappear

At the top of my list:

Merriweather Post 2012:  Cobra part 1 --> part 2 --> right into a full, rocking Run Thu --> seamlessly right back into Cobra part 3 .

I'm a big Dondante fan also and have seen some great ones.  And I agree about PC Evelyn being just amazing.  There are so many great moments, it's hard to remember them all.

This is also at the top of my list (via a recording. What I would've given to see it live...). I wish they incorporataed this more somehow, but I also understand that they don't have too many songs that they can break off mid-song and return again with out it being a little awkward.

One of my favorites (again via recording), is the 06/29/11 show where the band mistakenly (?) goes straight into the second half of the song, then recovers, plays the first half, and finishes with the second half again. It's such a good transition of explosion-calm-explosion again.
