Anyone else wondering what the hell about last night's poster?   The image is facing one way and the band's name and date are facing the other. No matter how you look at it, something will be upside down.

Not much chance of that baby finding a frame or space on a wall at the ericm residence.

Not sure what it's called but that that sound box thing is upside down when Jim wears it around his neck.

Yeah, I get that but on the poster there's writing and numbers on the buttons, the guys initials on some, etc. in order for those to be read, the band, venue,  and date are upside down.

Echoing what was said in the post above me, those of us who look at the setlists from the perspective of a person who attends multiple shows per tour are a very small minority among the set of people who go to MMJ shows. Most of the people in the seats are locals and are probably going to go home bummed if the band doesn't play certain songs that those of us in this thread might get tired of seeing get played every night. MMJ are not Phish or Widespread or the Dead. They don't have a huge cadre of fans traveling with them to every show like those bands do.

Also both shows I've seen this tour were better than evet, so there's that too.

Nobody doubts the awesomeness of the band and their higher rate of mixing it up than many bigger richer more "successful" bands. Without crunching the numbers there seems to have been  waaaay more repeats over these last 10 shows than there have been on any previous tour.

There's a few other kinda odd elements to this tour the strangest to me being 3 Ohio dates out of 12 total. The other thing is that they really haven't toured much since Lockn (10 non festival/OBH appearances between the Beacon run in 2015 and the start of this tour a yeah and a half later) so I would THINK that even if there aren't so many fans going to multiple shows and they want to include the "hits" for the locals that are coming one time and one time only that they would give the crowd a little more indulgence.

I'll give you a great example of what I'm talking about. I'll ignore the Orpheum/Beacon/Red Rocks/Masonic runs andf just focus on two random back to back nights in 2 "random" cities (awesome cities but just 2 stops on the tour)...

https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/my-morning-jacket/2015/comerica-theatre-phoenix-az-33f5b819.html

The first night has 12 songs that were not played the following night and the second night had 13 that didn't appear the first night. Amongst those 2 nights they got ridiculous stuff (not gonna enumerate it because its so glaringly obvious when looking at the sets). I didn't need Merriweather or Queens to be THE shows that had a rollin back/gideon/O/Hopefully etc... but I've gotten to the point where I reasonably expect at least two nights on one tour to be something like this.

Yup, we're all spoiled. This band should be selling out stadiums and has so much good stuff that many of us have experienced in the most mind-blowing settings/contexts which has resulted in the bar being high. Nevertheless, I think something's off...

cshum372

They have played a total of 51 songs during the Summer Tour.. that's barely enough to have played two consecuitive nights with repeats.. so there is a fair criticism of not mixing it up as much as we have come to expect..

The reason I am not worried is because the shows are a very high calibur. Maybe they didn't get a lot of practice in for this relatively small Summer Tour?

Anyone figure out who the artist was that did the poster?

ericm

Don't know who the artist is but mine is stamped on the back with a "printed at Grand Palace Chatanooga" and it's not numbered either. No idea how many were sold.

I like that if you view it with the band/venue so you can read it, the straps on the side of the machine seem to be hanging up and out of frame so it's like it was hanging from a hook or from someone's (Jim's) neck (like photo below). Neat idea.

Also liked the little touch of the Victory Dance lyrics being on the buttons. Not sure I'll be hanging it up but not because of the design but because a lack of wallspace and frames lol

ericm

I don't have any problem with the effects box hanging like it is around Jim's neck. My problem is why put all the phrases, words, and initials on the buttons if you have to hold it upside down to read it? If the buttons were blank and it was just a generic looking effects box, I wouldn't have given it a second thought.

If it were to be hung up, we'd have to have the band venue and date facing up, which to me negates the whole point of whatever is being  said on the buttons, since you can't really read it upside down.

I don't know, maybe it's just me but it just seems kind of a head scratcher.

i dunno what it is.....these shows have been disgustingly awesome...those new jams and new little additions they've done to the warhorses, I'm Amazed Wordless etc are cool and all and make those songs stomachable, but man, if I was going to travel to 5 of these shows with my lady and say I didn't get to Nashville with Just One Thing, or Merriweather for Picture of You, there'd be next to nothing that I hadn't seen already in only two shows of seeing the band:

I'm Amazed, played way too much.

Circuital is an epic construction of brilliance, but when played so flippantly it's affect is lost, especially on the peeps seeing these guys almost every show. I could see it getting old.

Victory Dance is a powerful song and I'm glad they played it both times I saw them, but......it should be saved to be a powerful opener or encore once every three shows or something

Wordless Chorus is something that should turn itself into a rarity, because it's been done for so long, nonstop and it's getting old. The song still puts chills down my spine...not gonna lie...but....yeah

Off The Record....man if that middle psychedelic jam isn't changing any, the song HAS to go for at least a year or so, I'm sick of it. I only skip ahead to the jams in the middle and end because the verses and chorus i'm so sick of believe it or not, as much as I LOVE This song.

Touch Me II should be taken out for a whole tour , they've played it full on with reckless abandon since 2008. It's a great song, a showstopper, like it was at my first show, but it becomes mailed in after a while. The second time I saw the band they played this again and it felt like "oh yeah...here comes this" like it was just a mail in song...it was sad because this song gives me such insane vibes, ever since the June 2008 day I first heard it. It should be saved as a two-fer with Smokin to finish a main set, other than that, get rid of it FOR NOW.

And OBH.........this is the band's Freebird, now. OBH is a classic, a masterpiece, no one can deny. But is it any Jacket fan's FAVORITE song???? I don't think so. And, as we know, the band can end shows with heart-stopping versions of Phone or Steam or even Gideon, Dancefloors or Mahgeeta.

The band CAN mix it up...something's just telling me they don't want to or something.

I mean playing A New Life and State of the Art is TOO MUCH when you're only playing 22 songs at Forest Hills fucking stadium....A New Life was also poorly positioned as the 3rd song in the setlist, really zapped the energy and momentum. But that's just me, as I've never liked A New Life whatsoever, I hate the song to be honest.

State of the Art is a fixture I'm proud of and think should be used sparingly, as it seemed to be before this, but now it's every show.

Man this forum got spoiled.
Was the set standard? Sure, but it was flawless. Jims singing might have been the best I've heard from him in the 15 or so shows I've seen them play.

Enjoy this band while you can, if you're getting bored with them take a break. To criticize that show last night is absurd.

The one I got at this year's Cincinnati show was by Clinton Reno too, and It only had an upper-case R sort of in a square at the bottom right and no numbers either. The R was part of the design and not signed.

Good eye Mr. White. Just checked the poster from FH and it has the same upper-case R in the same spot. Didn't even notice it before you mentioned it.

Couldn't agree more. I'd love to see the deep cuts like everyone else but I feel so fortunate to see these guys every single time. I don't care what they play because it's all f-ing incredible. My opinion is stop having expectations about shows (IMO, it comes off as selfish and unreasonable) and simply enjoy the greatest band on earth. Who knows how much longer we'll have these amazing shows.

Just found this in a post on Facebook from Clinton Reno hinting people should look at the poster with the lights out. Also, he's going to be selling a few AP ones of this show and another this Tuesday, probably.

You might like this poster more now, ericm.

Yeah, I wish mine looked like that. Unfortunately mine doesn't have the deep colors or crispness of that one. That might be the variant as they had several different batches being sold. The first was a deep red backround with white border, and the one I got is pink with an off white border. Not nearly as clean and crisp as the red one or the one in that pic.

Oh no, I totally get it. Like I said, I think it's neat but an odd choice. I likely won't be hanging it up either and I've definitely had a handful of posters where weird choices like that intrigue me but make it less likely to hang up. I've got a great looking Tool poster from this year but the way the lights in my place reflect off it make it look weird and hard to make out.

Also have this Jack White poster that I framed because it was a hassle to track down (eventually got on the artist's private auction list somehow because I kept e-mailing and bugging them about a release lol) but the placement of the "E" definitely rubs me a weird way.

Overall I like the idea and design of this poster but it isn't my favorite. Not sure if I have one of those glow in the dark ones that was just posted.....cool effect.

ericm

Damn man, I wish I would've know you were going to the show. I should've figured you'd be there, and it would've been good to catch up or have a drink. My bad for not getting in touch. Next time around for sure.

That Jack White poster is definitely one that would have me scratching my head a bit too. The E is placed really weird but the Empire State Building being upside down is really strange and kind of looks like a big, old school metal  hiperdermic needle to me. Way before your time but I remember those scary suckers.

living in nyc, with a child, i havent been able to see them since the beacon.  i had zero problems with the setlist, and actually liked it.  but i also tempered my expectations being a one off show.

the playing, the vibe, the weather! all on point..

how did people get out of there? i actually used pt2/obh to get out of there and grab an uber, but im wondering the deal if you wait til the end- train/subway easy enough coming out to get into manhattan?

sda

If anyone has a poster from this show, I would love to purchase it.
