i'll be fucking pissed if those are all the tracks on the album. damn...i've already heard half of it! 10 songs! thats a joke....we have to wait 2 years for 10 new songs?

im startin' to loose faith in the ol' jacket.

tomEisenbraun

dude, i have seen nothing out of you on these boards but pessimism. It seems like all you do is bash he new direction of the band. How bot you just log off and curl up with your copy of the TN Fire and be done with it?

That said, I'm really excited about this. Yes, we've already heard half of the songs, but we haven't heard them on the album, which gives them a lot more room for creative headspace. I can't wait to hear Dondante and Lay Low and especially It Beats 4 U, to see what they do with it on the album. We've seen cool stuff on stage, but this is an album, and normally they have to scale back on stage due to lack of band members to fill it up.

Also, this album definitely sounds like it has some characteristic Jim James brand of "weird" on it, which makes me very happy. I was a little worried it might have a little too mugh of a guitar assault on it. 8)

To Neal - don't give up on em. If you don't like the new album, then fine. We can't make you. But please don't approach it so pessimistically, it drags down everybody to see you rail on it so hard. And your cmments are always written in such a way that they invite someone to get defensive.

Look out for the greater good...

Maybe they're really loooooooong songs...
10 songs is better than no songs.

This Neal guy's starting to grow on me.
He's living proof that it doesn't matter what you do, some asshole is going to hate it (even though Conaway insists that there are no assholes on this board) (sorry again about your rules, johnny) :)

I think Neal's the same guy who tried to crash the Wilco boards a couple years ago when I used to hang around there a lot. Maybe Neal's really my friend Ben, a programmer who told me once that for entertainment at work, he deliberatley goes on boards for bands he hates just to start shit with the fans. Of course, some people always get offended. If no one pays him any mind, he will go away eventually. But he wants to you to argue w/ him. Ben, is that really you? The joke's old my friend.

10 x 5 = 50

if each song averages to be 5 mins, thats 50 mins

50 mins is more than enough time for you get your rock out

now piss off

utonynashm

Just sitting here thinking...It would be sweet as hell if they put "Oxen" as a hidden track!

Or anything like that...But mmj doesn't do hidden tracks really, right?

corey

How did this lucky bastard get such an advanced copy? It's a long way out for them to be sending promo CDs.
I know it's Billboard and all, but damn.

tomEisenbraun

haha, i think they set the release a little late, just for timings sake and that theyve been sitting on it a little while. At least, thats what it sounded like from Two Tone's email.

He also said they recorded Oxen there, so I would expect an EP out sometime later with the less weird material on it? That song really does kick ass, and I'm sure they will release it.

I think oxen sounds a lot like sooner

I haven't heard a single song of this yet, so I'm excited anyhow. And hey, 'Horses' from Patti Smith and 'Songs of love and hate' by Leonard Cohen both only have eight songs and they're two of the best albums ever. In fact, I'm starting to become a fan of short albums. 40 minutes, 10 songs. So much better than 70 minutes with 4 boring songs, or something.
I'm ready when you are

Oz

In fact, screw LPs, I want more EPs! Why has it been such a long time MMJ made a EP? The Split EP is still one of my favourite releases ever by this band. I love that format, really...

It hasn't been that long, if you consider AcousticitsuocA, which was just last year...

I kind of see it another way - I think Neal should post more often. I get a kick out of people who make silly comments about there being ten tracks on the album, half of which have already been heard. (Although it sounds a bit like maybe Neal just wants MORE MMJ - a sign of a true fan, perhaps?)Writing songs is no piece of cake, and ten new songs represent ten more than I currently possess. I can't fucking wait to hear this album. They're obviously going to be way different than their live versions, especially with all the talk of a "new sound" that we've been hearing about in interviews.

I also don't think that Neal's negative comments drag anybody down in the slightest. Who cares what a guy on a message board says about something you're excited about? I know it kind of sucks to hear someone talk shit about something you like, but for me, the older I get the more I realize that as an interested, discerning music fan, I'm not in the least bit interested in what others think about "my bands", so I don't bother to get defensive. To be honest, I think it's funny. For example, if someone can sit down and carefully listen to Thelonius Monk and say, "This is crappy", there's nothing to do but raise my eyebrows and go, "Hmmmm, okay". Or if they think that It Still Moves is a "sellout" album, I make an amused snorting sound. Either they get or they don't.

However, Eisey, I do see your point. I just think that we should allow and even encourage derision, if for no other reason than to think that we're special for liking a special band. (Did I just admit that? At dawn, my ego rides again.)

Uhm, yeah, forgot about that one. But I really meant EPs with new songs, like short albums. And I've never really liked live albums. But that's just me.

A little bit off topic, but does anyone remember the band Rough Trade from Canada from the 70's with Carol Pope?

They did a complete album, live from the floor straight to vinyl.  And they paused in between each song.

I'm not making that up.
