EU still

doesn't quite do it for me. I saw the boys twice this tour and seeing the songs live didn't really help much, either. I do like a handful of songs, and I don't think its crap or anything. Just as a whole album it still doesn't grab me. The album sounds over-produced to me. Its not a style thing, I always love bands experimenting, it just sounds like it was made intentionally poppy.

I had the opposite reaction the other day. I found myself sitting in traffic, it was finally getting warm out, and this old evil urge came over me to hear Highly Suspicious (and I don't care what anyone says, that song is pure, 100%, unadulterated genius). But then I went to put this on, and I realized I had the refrain in Touch Me pt I stuck in my head ("...I'm smiling too, I see myself in you...CRESCENDO"), and then I realized I could really go for the title track, and I realized despite my reservations on certain songs studio version, the album is still incredible and holds up well one year later.

Though, I admit, it still remains the only one I routinely skip songs. However, I've contemplated simply replacing the ones I skip with well-recorded live versions for my own hybrid album.

I heard all this new EU material at the Houston show for the first time, and had to go to youtube to hear again. I loved it. Then the album came out, and i was a little disappointed with some of the production. I love the album, but i thought pat's drumming sounded less powerful than live. I do love the album except for 2 halves. that is the only mmj song i dont like. it does sound like a pop attempt, and they dont do that. the album is great, but man, it sounds so much better live.

I didn't think 2 halves was that bad. It was the first point in the line connecting a newer trend towards late 60s style pop music (2nd point, making the line, being Dear Wife). I usually skip Sec Walking, Thank You Too, and Look at You, however Look at You can be satisfied by a live version quite easily.

I've started skipping I'm Amazed due to over-saturation.

I agree. That song forces my hand into the "rock" position and I have to hold onto something with my other hand. It just kicks so much ass! I thought the roof of the Chicago Theater was going to rocket off when they played it.

I remember when I listened to the NPR stream from SXSW and heard Highly Suspicious and I thought, "ok, this song is either going to be ridiculously awesome, or just ridiculous, so I have to listen to it again" and I was not let down.

and you know what's bothering me about I'm amazed? It's the over saturation of the first half of the song. I love the guitar outro a ton, but the mainstream can't handle something you can't sing along to. So I have to constantly endure the deedleydeedelydee doo doo deedleydeedelydee doo doo like it's the ringtone you assign to that clingy friend who becomes emotional after a beer and you know they're calling you to go out drinking.

When it first came out I liked it but felt I couldn't really wrap my head around it, like there was something missing.  The other day I listened to it (after it had been a while) and it hit me like a ton of bricks.  I absolutely love it now, I think it stands up to all the others (I don't like getting into comparisons/rankings of their albums, they're all wonderful in their own way).  Sometimes the best albums just take some time.  But in the mean time try freeing your mind and don't think too much about it.

I always sorta felt like Evil Urges was made as a compilation of wild songs they could incorporate into their live show, rather than one solid consistent block of an album.
It just feels that way, there's such a variety in the style of songs and the production of each...

Songs like Thank You Too, Librarian and Look At You are slow numbers that do quite nicely across the middle of a show.  Sec Walkin' attempts to capture the magic of Golden but falls slightly short.
Smokin' From Shootin' and Touch Me pt.2 are the 3/4 of the way through the show mind-bending orgasmic build-up, that can stand alone or lead to an even bigger blow off like Run-Thru.
Highly Suspicious is the rare post-coital second orgasm where you think you're done but then this ridiculous catchy hook makes you stand on your boner again.  I know it might sound obnoxious if you're just chillin' at home with head-phones on, but that song was designed with one single purpose in mind: blowing the roof off of venues in a tongue-in-cheek celebratory manner.

Touch Me pt. 1, while kinda neat, just feels like Jim was listening to too much Flaming Lips when he wrote it to me.  I like it, but something about it just seems off IMO.
Unfortunately, Aluminum Park and Two Halves just feel like vanilla filler to me, but hey, can't please ALL the people ALL the time.  (and I bet they rock live).  Before MMJ came along I would cite Pearl Jam as my all-time fav rock band, yet they've got all kinds of filler crap across all their albums.

In conclusion, I do agree with TC that Evil Urges does lack a certain something found on the other albums: A consistent definitive vibe that carries you along for a ride the whole way through.  On the other hand, I do think it is a collection of wacky, awesome tunes, and a step in directions that most other up-and-coming rockers aren't even aware of.

    Actually, it's November, not December. March is the 3rd month, November is the 11th month. December is the 12th month.

soooo, 3 + 8 = 11 NOT 12.

(unless your calendar only has 11 months. But, it would have to be missing one of these months (do any of the following look unfamiliar to you?): April, May, June, July, August, September, October. If you live in a place where one of these months does not exist, then I apologize.)
