I've been spending some time listening to the oldest MMJ and researching the early years of the band.

Does anyone have recordings from before MMJ?

Month of Sundays
Winter Death Club
hotel Roy

The oldest MMJ recording I have is
1999-12-14 Bunbury Theatre - Louisville, KY

Forgive me if this revives old threads, but I imagine a lot of folks would appreciate this and any updates regarding older, rediscovered recordings.

For those interested, I have been spending much of my time here:

Thanks!

Are you looking for shows?  I have a couple crappy month of sundays shows.  Sound-quality is crappy not the shows themselves.  As far as albums you should be able to order month of sundays albums from noise pollution and Jim released a Mont de Sundae album not too long ago.  Hotel Roy's album is out of print I believe but I've posted it here a few times, same with winter death club

I guess I'm eager to get anything I don't already have.   ;)

That Dec. '99 show is the earliest on the archive.  I'm not sure I'm interested in buying Month of Sundays or other pre-MMJ albums, just curious as to their sound.  We recently came across that demo tape dated 1996.  I'll do a search for some earlier posts you think you might have made.  Thanks.

There's JJ's "Helicopters" album which I think is from 1997...pre-MMJ.

I actually recently picked that up.  Might regret it, but it fills the collection.  We'll see.  Waiting for it to arrive.  Thanks.

That's Hotel Roy though.  Just to be clear.

Right.  Some guy was selling his Jacket material on eBay recently.  I'd just come across and was curious about Hotel Roy when his copy of the disc come up.

For about $65, I got-

Hotel Roy- Helicopters CD
At Dawn CD w/bonus demo disc
Acoustic Chorale DVD
EU promo poster w/all 5 sigs

Not a bad haul, I think.

Has anyone ever actually heard anything from helgeson story or panure?

aMillionDreams

Helgeson Story's album No Mail Days are Sad Days is great.  I've also posted that here before.

I've heard Panure, but don't think I have anything I can share.

If anyone has obscure out-of-print/okay to share pre-MMJ material, I'd love to download some.  I've purchased Hotel Roy's Helicopters.  I've also searched the forum for past postings, such as those Dylan mentioned, but the links are all dead.  Thanks.

Thanks, D-man.  I'm just a completist.  I enjoyed my first listen of Hotel Roy.  Great drumming!  1997 would put Jim at about 20 years old when it came out.  My understanding is that he didn't really write those songs.  It must be challenging to sing lyrics that aren't your's.

I've been facinated with the early days of other bands, too.  I teach at a high school in New Hampshire.  When he was 17, Steven Tyler and his band, Aerosmith, played the prom here.  The teacher across the hall from me has the original contract for that gig.  By the time I saw them, in 1984, they were so messed up (drink and drug) the show was a disaster.  Sounds like they rocked the Newport High School gym years earlier, though.

I've also posted a demo Boston used to land their first record deal (see Other Music).  You can see why it worked.

Early pre-Beatles, early Hendrix, pre-Dead Jerry, its all a learning experience.  The evolution of greatness.

johnnY, that's a great story about Aerosmith playing the prom there, nice!!

I've been kinda lurkin' on your researches here and am kind of an Early Bird myself. I haven't had the time to fully look into super early MMJ , but I'm appreciative of all the info you all are conjuring up. I have the Chaps. 1 & 2 and other random numbers I've been able to dig up. I did a brief Month of Sundays search mission a couple months ago, but to no real avail. I love the pre-Beatles, Hendrix, Jerry, Zep, Floyd, etc.... there's nothing like hearing them talking songs out and hearing them 'mess up' (which I always think still sounds great! hahah) I'll have to check out the Boston demo too.

Just wanted to thank ya all for the dirt on pre-MMJ. When I get more time (which I should have this week, hopefully) I'm gonna really pore over it all. And you've made the searches much simpler  :)

So, I've got a copy of the hotel Roy CD "Helicopters" on eBay and would like to share it with the forum.

Does anyone have a compelling reason for me NOT posting a download of the album?  It appears to be out of print and I'm not selling it.  Nonetheless, I respect the opinions of those more wise in the ways of Jacket who have insight into this particular golden artifact.  And if Jim hisself would like to let me know his feelings, he can PM or email me his phone number and we can discuss it.

Seriously, any thoughts would be appreciated.  If no objections, I'll post a download link, probably tomorrow.  I will remove it upon request.

Thanks.

Shouldn't be a problem.  AMD posted this a while back where I downloaded it.  I haven't checked you see if his link is still working.
