Thanks, guys. And you're right, they're bound to tour with the new album. And it will be sweet  :D

Quote It must be really tough on those folks across the Big Pond, like doctorinthehouse and greggy.  They have waited even longer for a Jacket show.

Nice to get a mention!

Hey John, isn't Bonaroo relatively near you? I suppose you've been busy with the family and the new house. How's it going, by the way?

hey, thankx for asking.  it's been hectic and pretty crazy, but generally I'm in a good head space.  lots of bourbon to take the edge off, and good friends to listen when the chips are down.

yup, the 'roo is pretty close, but it just wasn't in the cards for me.  oh well...maybe next time 'round?  ;)

Hey--not to change the subject but: are there any Louisvillians (or anyone else for that matter) who are not going to buy tickets to the June 30 show because no official announcement on the Jacket has been made?

I was just curious--because I know of a few people who are not going to buy tickets because there has been no official announcement.

You would have to think if the Jacket was announced the show would have already sold out.  I guess it will just be more room for us.

EC

It could very well be that they are playing Louisville, but that they're too busy coming off of the tour and gearing up for another tour.

But I don't know, I'm just guessing.  :)

I found out today that they aren't announcing the show because Wilco's management wanted it that way.  Wilco's "people" knew that MMJ could sell out the Palace on their own merit and so they ask MMJ to not announce it.  It makes sense if you're Wilco, you don't want to play to a half empty audience.
(Sorry in advance to John Conaway for breaking the rules of the forum by posting unconfirmed information and assuming that MMJ is going to be there, I know I said I wouldn't do it again but I thought some people would be interested in this lil tidbit) (If you're not interested in unconfirmed information, then get out of this thread and the forum and check the shows page for all your updates).

Thanks for the info again aMillionDreams.

Unconfirmed stuff is really exciting.  Confirmed stuff is really conservative and boring.  Who needs that.  Why would you confirm when you can just unconfirm?  Rad.

EC

Really?  That's why it hasn't been announced?  Because Wilco asked?

Hm.  Hmmmmmm...  I mean, it's fucking Wilco.  Obviously My Morning Jacket has a substantial following in Louisville, but wouldn't Wilco as well?  And, what, are people going to leave halfway through?

It just sounds feeeshy.

Builtolast

I haven't heard a logical explanation yet as to why they aren't announcing it, but I'll be there rocking the nation either way.  Tweedy and Jim are both sorta odd fellows and it wouldn't surprise me if they had something up their sleeve.  At the same time, it does seem strange that the promoters and mgmt would allow this sort of charade to go on.

I'm also surprised it hasn't sold out with all the rumours, I would have thought Wilco could sell it out themselves, so they obviously don't need to hurt ticket sales by NOT announcing MMJ as the opener.  Either way, i'm keeping my fingers crossed for the Jacket opener.   ;D

Everybody knows that you do what Tweedy says or you're fired.  Jay Bennett learned that one the hard way. ;)

JUst Kidding!  (kind of)

kymoose

Yeah, Tweedy seems like somewhat of a hard-ass at times.  I'm an old Uncle Tupelo fan--and Tweedy ain't nothing compared to Jay Farrar.  He might be the grumpiest person on the planet.

Anyway, it will be sweet if it is just Wilco--but will be monumentous if it is the Jacket as well.  I do kind of wish they would just announce the date--because I know of people who aren't going until they do.

kerri

Well, if that is the real reason why MMJ hasn't been announced yet, it wasn't Tweedy's decision. That's the kind of thing Wilco's management -- aka Tony Margherita -- would come up with.

HA!

You guys, honestly.  You should go anyway.  It's still Wilco.  It will be a fun show.  :)

I find it hard to believe that's the reason (Wilco's managment) they won't announce MMJ playing. I live in Louisville and I'm just thinking about numbers here. The Palace holds about 2700.

- Wilco last played here summer 2002 at the Brown Theater which holds about 1400. I was there, they did not quite sell it out, but close.

- MMJ last played here at Lebowskifest in June 2004 on the riverfront park that would hold 4000+, but they actually sold about 3000 or so tix, I was there as well. Keep in mind that a good portion of the folks there were there for the fest and not neccessarily MMJ...

- Before that, MMJ played 2 nights at Headliner's in the Fall 2003 which holds about 1000. I was there both nights too. They did sell out, but not until the day of, if I recall.

So, to say that either Wilco or MMJ could easily sell out the Palace at 2700 capacity may be stretching the truth of the matter. In Chicago or New York, definitely, but in Louisville, KY where I've lived all my 26 years, I wouldn't say for sure. Granted, both bands have picked up steam nationwide over the last 1-2 years, but... Contrary to popular belief, MMJ are not hometown heroes or even recognizable names to most Louisvillians. I go to shows big and small at every club and theater in town regularly, probably 40+ a year here and I see the same people at all the shows. There is a scene for indie and indie-minded music here, but it pales in comparison to larger cities. We're just lucky to even get a Wilco show and even luckier to have a band like MMJ to call our own. But I love this city! You all should buy tix and come to the show regardless of whether MMJ plays or not...

aMillionDreams

Believe what you like, I never try to tell anyone what to believe, I'm just telling you the truth.
I agree that Louisville has not cuddled this band, but that is only because they rejected the indie scene that you are referring to.  The fact is that they draw fans due to their music not who knows them and goes to all the shows.  Since MMJ is from Louisville, more people have had the chance to hear (with radio play and the huge events around town they have had their names attached to).  MMJ has  a lot of fans in Louisville.  I was also at those two shows you mentioned as well as many others over the years.  The first headliners show I went to had about 50 people at it and only half of them were their for the band and half of those were related to the band members.  My point is, their audience in Louisville has multiplied over the years and shows no signs of slowing down.  I think they would have no problem selling  out the Palace themselves.  And even if they couldn't, does it sound so far off that Wilco's management might think that they could sell out the Palace.  Wilco's management doesn't have to be responsible, they just have to do what's best for Wilco, even if it does screw the MMJ fans in a way.

I agree with EC and Kevin on this one. Just go see Wilco, If MMJ plays it's a great bonus. Don't risk missing it, I wouldn't if I had the chance.
