Yo, I talked to the folks at the Palace and they said the Jacket is opening for Wilco on the 30th.  Not to blow the cover--but, there have been several other posters guaranteeing a MMJ spot that night.  So, if you haven't gotten your tickets for the show yet, you may want to do that right now.  I think there are still a few left.

first of all, mmj is not playing with wilco at the palace. why would they open for a band in their home town? nobody has confirmed them playing at the palace. its not on this website or wilco's. do you really want to see mmj at the palace? they are making a huge mistake if they play there.
why would you want to be confined to a seat all night, can't move around, can't smoke, then be let down after mmj plays sitting there watching wilco. no thanks.

First of all, there ARE playing the Palace.  You ask, why would they want to open for someone in their own hometown.  Well, for a chance to get to play the Palace ( which is a dream for any Louisville musician and Jim is no exception).   The Palace is a beautiful place to see a show, it is legendary, and believe it or not, there is something nice about seeing them somehwere that's not smoky, sweaty, with a bunch of drunken assholes slamming into you (maybe when you're older you'll understand).
Oh yeah, and some people like Wilco.  Maybe they didn't want people like going to the show who would be bored with Wilco and that's why it has not confirmed and goes unannounced.  It is, however, going to happen and it's gonna be great!

Just to offer a little more insight on why they might be opening and not announcing it.  The person I talked you to said they that didn't want to be like Peace in the Jones.  Peace in the Jones is a Lousiville band who plays one or concerts a year in Louisville around Derby time.  I suppose that means that they don't want their concert-goers to just come because its more of an event or a get-together, not people coming to see a show that they are genuinely interested in enjoying the music.  I think that opening for Wilco accomplishes this goal and the fact that they get to rock the palace just makes another dream come real.

old enough to not have bart simpson as my avatar. you must be cool!! quit being a hippie....seeing them at the palace would blow and be a boring show unless you don't know how to have a good time such as yourself. i'll wait for the headliners show....bart.

Wow!, Neal, you seem like such a wonderful fella!

I just called the Palace and the box office guy said that as of this time, they don't know of any openers. However, I hope the rumors are true, this would seriously be a dream show for me being my two fav bands and all  :)

neal, I am hoping to see MMJ at the Palace so for once it will be quiet as possible to hear Jim sing without the bar chatter. I figure outside of them playing in my living room, this will be a good chance to hear them live. I had a hell of a time seeing them in B'ham and Athens recently. WILCO rocks too! Do us a favor Neal, wait for the Headliners show. See ya there.

peace in jones?!  jim's dream to play at the palace?!  dude, WTF?

aMillionDreams

Jim talked about how he's always dreamed of playing the Palace during a solo concert from 5-1-2002 in Knoxville, TN.  Says that he's always dreamed of playing the Palace and that the Tennesse Theatre was as close as he had got so far.  So even if you all aren't going to enjoy it I'll know that Jim and I are having a good time, even if we don't get to "smoke and move around".  I'd like to point out that when MMJ played headliners back in the day there were tables and chairs up front and waitresses brought your drinks to you, the shows were a lot "cooler" back then, because the music took its time and the crowd was small and respectful.  I appreciate MMJ not wanting to play to the Headliners crowd anymore, because I'm tired of all assholes like this Neal guy, too.  See you at the Palace!

Rule Number One:  No one here is an asshole.  I really mean that.

Rule Number Two:  Everyone has their own opinions.  They're like assholes;  everyone has one, some stink more than others.

Rule Number Three:  Unless Master Riny has posted it HERE as a confirmed show, we're just whistling in the dark as to whether they are or aren't playing anywhere, anytime.

Rule Number Four:  We require a...shrubbery!

Rule Number Five:  There is no rule number five!

"audience fragmentation" is for the birds.  MMJ could play in an outhouse and have the members of N'Sync in the audience, and it wouldn't fucking matter to me.  I have enjoyed every single show I've been to.

Just my humble opinion, really.

Not to play devil's advocate or anything, but MMJ has already played the Palace on 05.09.03 for public radio's non-commvention taping of E-town. Also on the bill that day were Jason Mraz, North Mississippi All-Stars and Joan Osbourne. MMJ played a 30 minute set that was plagued with sound problems and it looked as if Jim and Co. left the stage quite upset at the sound and the fact that thier "dream" Palace show went so badly. Jim put his guitar down before the last song had finished and just walked off stage without so much as a glance at the audience. It sucked, I felt bad for them. Granted, this wasn't really an official Palace headlining or opening gig, but it was still an appearance.

But, yes, a real Palace appearance is in order :)

Ha Ha! Got Spamalot tix for the 30th.

Like was said above, it is not official until it is official.  I bought my tickets as soon as I was able, but I did so with the understanding that Wilco was the only name on the ticket.

I doubt very much that Wilco would belatedly schedule a date in Louisville on the day after the last date of their tour with MMJ and not have MMJ on the bill in Louisville.

I suppose that there are all sorts of reasons why MMJ wouldn't open, and I can think of all sorts of reasons why they might not announce it if they are.  But I think the big obvious conclusion to be drawn is that they are going to open.

I'd surely be disappointed if they don't play, but as more time goes by with neither confirmation nor denial, I become more sure that they will play.

I think we can do without that sort of thing. It's one of the things that makes this board different. Neal gave an opinion and you patronised him by saying something about growing up. You two need to agree to disagree without namecalling.

I don't know what headliners is (are?). I'd be happy if mmj were playing on my continent. Hey isn't it funny that the opposite of continent is incontinent?

aMillionDreams

I didn't mean to offend.  Sorry Neil, JohnConaway, and doctorinthehouse.  I was just trying to give my opinion about some things.  I didn't think that I was the one going over the line.  My most humble apologies.  I must be an asshole!

Maybe I'm one too,Because I agree with you aMillionDreams.I thought Neal started taking it personal and you just defended your self.If someone had talked to me like that in person I would have called him a asshole to his face.Plus Neal is listed in another thread as neezy  giving another sarcastic answer.I'm all for being cool but there was no need for his sarcasm.
