longer shows/setlists

I'm curious as to why this band doesn't put on longer shows.  They have the catalog to put on a 2 - 2/1/2 hour show a night, but they don't.  

I'm also surprised they don't vary the setlists more, too.  

I'm not knocking the band at all, this is not a negative thread...just putting it out there.  What are your thoughts?  And don't say, "It perfect the way it is...or...They can do what they want"...no fluff answers, please.

1.  Have you looked at the shows page and seen how many shows have been played in the past few years?  Would you want to put on 3+ hour shows for the hell of it?

2.  I get tired watching them play for a few minutes.  Can you imagine the toll it takes physically to play like that, night after night after night?  

3.  Despite your plea for "no fluff answers", they do what they do.  Not everyone is Guided by Voices or the Dead...

There's another thread around here about the setlists... but maybe it's actually in a thread about a particular show and this was discussed. Can't remember.

Anyway, one of the takes is that they are mostly focusing on "Z" material, similar to the tour that they did when ISM came out. Then, hopefully, in the Spring they will tour again and vary the setlists up some like they did after the first ISM tour when they started playing "Cobra" and stuff like that.

i see what youre saying, yeah itd be great to have longer shows, but they put so much in to it, i dont think they could pull it off consistently. to tie in with another thread, they dont do enough drugs like ween to put on 3 plus hour shows all the time.  not that theres anything wrong with that.

waxy- this is a perfect example of how Pearl Jam has spoiled a lot of their fans.  Pearl Jam plays these epic 3 hour shows and no 2 shows have the same setlist.  if you look back to when they were supporting Vitalogy, their shows were right around 1 hour 45 or 2 hours

I think the chronological order is more important to MMJ.  They view an album as a complete experience so they attempt to keep it intact as much as possible.

I bet that the Louisville setlist will be epic.  I know the Palace has a curfew but hopefully they'll only let VHS or BETA have a few songs since all their songs sound alike anyway.

completely unrelated to most of the stuff mentioned...a lot of places have those annoying curfews.  for instance, the venue i saw them at turned into a nightclub at like 11 so mmj had to be off by like 10.30 at the latest.

it seems like they tend to throw in jim solo sets or a few more songs when theres no curfew

Sorry, had to get that off my chest abut VHS or BETA, they are really nice guys and I am really happy about their success I just don't particular like their style, but that's enough, you're right.

I don't know the actual time of the Palace curfew but when I saw MMJ / Wilco Jeff Tweedy said that they wanted to make sure they got to their last song before the curfew.  I don't hink it's obscene but it's there.  

{Sidebar} I saw Neil Young play in Cincy one time and he was pissed that they told him he had to stop at a certein time so he played for like a half hour and closed with "Piece of Crap".  It was a piece of crap too, but i doubt anything like that will occur at our show.

I think you're right. I guess Jim mixes it up a bit more when he does solo shows.

Everyone else is doing it!  Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight.  Have you been to any headlining concerts in the past 10 or so years?  Shows are much shorter these days.  The longest sets that I've seen have been GBV  or the Dead.  Santana is another exception, but most shows I've seen clock in around 1.5 to 2 hours.

So now we're comparing being a rock star to ditch digging?  By that logic, everything is easy.

ween!  theyre known for playing at least 2 1/2 hours, if not three or more.  even though it was a rare thing, i personally witnessed a dan bern show that clocked in about 3 hours and 20 minutes.

dont say no one is doing it, is a rare thing, but it happens.

Now, the last time I saw RUSH (last year), they played 3 hours (with a 15 minute intermission). So, I guess that's 2:45 minutes.

Of course, they have 20+ albums and a couple of their songs were 10 plus minutes.

They still rock.

i once saw the Fat Albert Jug Band play for like 32 hours straight but i had eaten like 2 lbs. of mushrooms at the time

I think the most legendary example is Bruce Springstein.  Back in the day he apparently would play shows that were 5 or 6 hours if he had nowhere to go that night.  That might be just a legend but the Boss can play forever too.

Of course he doesn't hold a candle to Fat Albert.
