i must say i am beyond jealous. i'm on the east coast, and mmj had to drop out of last year's nye show with north mississippi and crowes (replaced by trey) and although the show was good...i got tickets really only for mmj.

either way, sirius played the whole show tonite when i was driving back from the beach. i must search for a recording. sirius seemed to have a line out from the board so there has to be some decent kbps downloads out there.

QuoteI'm so envious that I didn't get to go to that show.  the setlist was MIND BLOWING.  Whoever was there, you are the luckiest people on earth.

Well, then I must surely be one of the luckiest people alive, for...
I got to:
a) see my favorite band
b) see my FAVORITE singer/songwriter
c) be in my favorite city
d) actually meet and talk to Jim on Saturday after the show AND
e) get to personally give him the bracelet I made for him (weird, I know. live with it)

An incredible show on Sunday which was so creative and fun that I had "perma-grin" by the time they blew on into OBH. (The whole Donner Party theme was so appropos after having ACTUALLY driven over Donner Pass from Reno to see them!)

I have to say that after the 6 shows I have seen now, these guys are coming into their own legend, and i daresay, next year, there won't be any breathing room!. Just leave me room to dance along! I will surely be there!

Careless Whisper was by far my most surprising moment of the night. I felt like I was back in middle school... so gangly-nostalgic! All Night Long and Celebrate - PERFECT!

Carl on slide guitar - my kness go to jelly.
Tommy - rippin it UP on Highway to Hell - the guys were lovin every minute of it!
All of the "acting" was great and in such a non-self-conscious way... It made it very tangible which made the entire evening feel so intimate, ..even though it also ROCKED so hard on all the well-loved tunes and so incredibly LOUD! I still feel it. {sigh}

Jim - damn, honey - chaps are made for you!  :P

All together, the best night of my life!

Plus, anyone get a load of that hot guy with the ELwire coat? MMJ all the WAY!!!

is more cowbell!

**a note:  i typed this HOURS ago, but my host's DSL crapped out.  i'm staying with a friend in sf.  finally got it up and running again.  here is part 2:**

okay.  took a walk around the neighborhood, had some tacos, read the onion and grabbed some joe.

there's no need to go through the entire set so i'll just lay out some stand out stuff:

-patrick kept that headdress on at least all the way thru OBH.  fierce, i tell you!
-one issue with being in the audience close to the stage is that sometimes you don't get to hear the mix, but hear a lot of the monitors (what can you do?)  last night carl's sax in dondante was GORGEOUS and audible.  woo!  also got to hear some beautiful bo work that i'd missed the night before.
-during they ran jim picked up one of the skeletons, draped its arms over his shoulders and danced with it.  during an instrumental break he dipped it low.  nice moves.

-the first three songs of the 2nd set were played without irony and with all heart.  what a great time.  during celebration all of the friends stayed on stage to sing, dance and bat balloons off the stage back to the crowd.  huge bales of white balloons, confetti and fake money inscribed with all sorts of great mmj stuff opened up over the crowd.  wotta thing!

-when the band started to play all night long there was a collective suprised quiet as people realized what was happening.  and then more dancing and singing  :)

-during wordless chorus jim picked a balloon up off the stage and held it to his chest while singing.  he was backlit, holding this now glowing balloon in mostly dark.  lovely.  at the end of the song he sang on his knees at the front of the stage clutching his giant hat to his chest.

-pocohants had a mini-marshmallow gun which he used to launch marshmallows from off stage at the band and the crowd during the set.  ;D  one of the fillmore security guys came over to investigate what was flying around.  i pointed out a marshmallow and explained.  he shook his head, laughed and went back to his post.

-when dearland horns came out to play again they sang along exuberantly (off mic) to EMR and dancefloors between horn bits.  for the record:  the horn assortment was as follows:  trombone, clarinet, saxophone

-don't remember where exactly, but jim made use of the cap pistol, firing it off during songs, and twirling it on his finger.  he also swung a shotgun around a bit.

-highway to hell.  holy smokes.  tommy takes the mic.  in that fantastic white suit.  bruce slings on the bass guitar...and the riffs begin.  t-t t. made his way around the stage at one point leaning over one of bo's rigs, and patrick's kit while singing.  don't know if he was at all bashful about singing or it was his normal m.o., but he sang with his back to the crowd quite a lot.  either way, it brought down the house.  (there was a woman in the photo/security pit in front of the barrier during the show taking pix of the band.  she and t-t t. are married.  what a terrfic thing to be with family and friends even when on the road.  hooray!)

--magheeta-->outro:  as the last bit of music was wrapping up at the end of the song, t-t t. made his way to his bass rack, and put up his guitar, and reached for something else.  i thought "another song?!  WHAT?"  but, when he brought his arm down he was holding a shot gun.  he strode confidently back to the front of the stage and confronted jim.  here another recorded dialogue came on.  scores to be settled, etc.
a long gun battle ensued, but what with tommy being a ghost and all, it wasn't much of a contest.  as all the members lay on the floor, tommy surveying the carnage, he said something about them ascending the stairway to heaven (the balcony above).  cue:  led zeppelin.  one by one he roused the band, first carl, patrick, jim and bo who were now wearing white robes (bed sheets with openings cut for their heads.  fucking awesome) and coming to terms with being spirits.  they filed back off stage being checked off the "heaven's list" kept by our FOH man in the giant hat as they approached the stairway.   there was much waving and a deep bow center stage as they left.  SPECTACULAR.

full disclosure:  i am a sad recounter of setlists as is evidenced by my account of night one.  last night pocohantas gave my pal the set list which i've been using to jog my memory of the night.

there were some good costumes in the crowd last night including a guy in a full body bunny suit.  that is some kind of commitment.  i was sporting my tuxedo t-shirt.   8-)

so:  THANKS FOR THE WONDERFUL WONDERFUL NIGHTS, GENTLEMEN!
your heart and humor serve to bring your music into further relief, and make it that much more challenging to describe your outfit to interested friends.

Fetus and A Delle you make me proud to be a fan of this band.  What great recounts of the show.  Thank you so much, it just affirms how much I love and believe in this band.  ms yvon, great stuff I could invision what it must have been like to be there in my mind.  Very Special.  I won't let myself miss this next time.  I feel very fortunate to have been at Bonnaroo this year but it's become clear that this band is at a point right now where you start understanding that they are going to keep topping themselves for quite a while.  Just when you think they can't blow your mind anymore they just grin and do it again only better!!!!!!!  These shows are Legendary but this legend aint done writting.

Was there a different poster for New Years than the 29th and 30th? If so, can someone post a pic of it?

BH

Great stories guys.  Ms. Yvon, wow, you may not be able to remember setlists, but you did a damn good job remembering the visuals.  Thank you so much for spending the time to set the scene.  I really enjoyed that.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

dr_zhivago

I had heard rumors of a NYE edition shirt, can anyone confirm this, I was unable to make it to the show?

Hi,
I was there in Friday and Sunday.  I feel so lucky.  The poster on Friday was for 2 nights and the NYE Sunday show had its' own poster.  I am not able to scan them  but will try to describe below.

For Friday and Saturday:
The Bill Graham Presents in San Francisco Poster had a brown faux wood background with a long wooden match stick on up in 2 curvy, sexy flames of fire, each flame spelling My Morning Jacket with 2 smaller flames below with Rogue Wave and Elvis Perkins.   Along the length of the match stick it describes "FRI + SAT. DECEMBER + 30, 2006, THE FILLMORE 1805 GEARY AT FILLMORE"

For NYE 2006 Poster
The poster was set inside a dark wooden frame setting a western feel (which was the tone of the entire night).  The landscape of the poser is barren and stark, yet warm and hot.  The bear is wearing a party hat with an "F". There is a pocket watch hanging from his vest pocket with the time of ten 'till midnight. The bear has an owl wearing a top hat sticking out of his mouth (like a "coo-coo clock") with a 2007 banner like a father time.
There is a white owl in an old wind blown tree which sits behind them and a mountain range in the background.    The landscape is littered with bones and a skull.
"Bill Graham presents in San Francisco MY MORNING JACKT –WAX FANG
NEW YEARS EVE DECEMBER 31st 2006 THE FILLMORE 1805 Geary at Fillmore"

There was a special edition t-shirt for the 3-night stand at the Fillmore. (Brown with light yellow letters and a lion "singing" flowers out all swirly around him - so like Jim's voice, eh?)  I have it at home, but I will take a pic later and upload it...tonight. unless someone beats me to it! LOL
