so.

let's start with the fillmore.  my friend and i got online pretty early (let your geek flag fly) so we saw some of the decor being loaded into the venue.  we couldn't tell what it was, but it piqued our curiosity.  the entry way to the fillmore was decorated with white snowdrifts, pine trees and wooden fencing.  inside at the top of the stairs was a rail car piled with gold (prospecting, but of course).  the auditorium was BEAUTIFUL.  the walls without the balcony and behind the stage were covered with immense gorgeous painted murals of woods and night sky.  these may be the murals hanging in okonokos, don't know...
the balconies were decorated to look as if snow and ice were hanging from them--blue and white fabric.  the stage was full of props.  we spent the time before the show just trying to spot them all.  on top of the speaker stacks were a stuffed coyote howling up, some skulls, more pine shrubs, boulders, some old lanterns, skeletons...including one that was draped over patrick's kit.

for NYE the fillmore had erected a barricade in front of the stage.  i was disappointed at first, but grew to love it as the night went on.  in a figurative way, you understand...
the swag stand was operating under the banner "general store" for the night.

and now:  wax fang.  outstanding.  these men came onstage in girls' cheerleading and ice-skating uniforms, hoop earrings, pontytails, eyeliner, tights and rocked the house.  what a great time.  i hadn't heard them before.  they played a broad range of  material.  at one point the guitar player was messing around with an effects touch pad which reminded me of nels cline or charles bissel of the wrens.  (i think...hope...they are playing with mmj in southern ca. later this week)
worth noting:  they formed a pyramid onstage,  the bassist and drummer forming the base.  the guitarist kneeled on their backs and played a solo.
pretty fucking rad.

and then...
the intro....

a scrim painted with more trees came down in front of the stage.  snow started blowing through the AUDITORIUM.  we heard wind howling... and then these 5 figures crept onto the stage as if walking in the cold and wind in a dark wood...
here is how they were dressed:
patrick--indian chief in buckskin w/full headdress and gold mask
carl--fringed buckskin suit and coonskin cap
bo--wide brimmed hat, terrific suit--a badass gambler sort of look
jim--cowboy chaps, vest, giant hat, holsters (working cap guns we were to learn...)
two-tone--covered under a full bear skin

the band mimed to a recorded dialogue about how cold and hungry they were, came down to the front of the stage to build a fire.  (the wood for the fire had been covered during wax fang's set...it was one of the prop suprises).  they sent tommy off to chop some more wood for the fire.  while he was off over in a corner miming chopping with a hatchet, the rest of the band conspired to kill and eat him (this was a very involved discussion regarding who would grab arms and ankles, etc.  [smiley=evil.gif]).  they snuck up on him, and as they attacked him, the lights went red.  they returned to the fire sated (licking bones and the blade of the killing spear) but feeling a bit remorseful for killing and eating their friend.  in remembering him someone ( carl?) remarked on tommy's leadership skills.

i don't remember exactly what happened next...i think the band moved to pick up their instruments as the lights went down...but still in character.  there were cries of "that sounds like a bass line!" or something similar.  a spot light shone at the balcony at the rear of the auditorium next to the stage, on which a banner hung that spelled "heaven".  there was two-tone in a white suit.  he descended the stairs in plumes of fog and joined the band to play OBH.  i was beside myself with whooping and laughing at the tremendousness of this whole scene so i don't remember what happened when tommy got to the stage, or how they made the transition to playing...

(i'm going to break this into 2 posts b/c this is soooo long and i could really use a cuppa joe.)

quick post:  this is a perfect time to mention our supporting cast:

bruce was wearing a hot squaw costume which served to display his MANY tattoos.  who knew?!  this also looked bitchin with his black studded equipement belt and walkie.

i don't know his name, but i believe he's front of house engineer.. was wearing a great tom mix-style western shirt and an ENORMOUS orange cowboy hat with a star in the center.

all night you could see our FOH man nodding professionally behind the board in this amazing hat, and bruce (who my friend dubbed The Best Pocohantas Of All Time) rocking out offstage, tuning guitars and dancing.

also of note:  not only were wax fang dressed in the cheerleader/ice skating suits, but at least two of them were stuffing their bras.  hope their dates weren't disappointed.   ;D

Awesome Ms Yvon.  Just awesome.  Thanks for taking the time to share a special show with us!  I also, can't wait for part two.  However, it was part one that I wanted more detail on and you gave it to me, and then some!

Kory J, I reposted them above but I don't think they are any larger. I didn't resize them at all this time.

I'm so envious that I didn't get to go to that show.  the setlist was MIND BLOWING.  Whoever was there, you are the luckiest people on earth.

LET_THE_FETUS_ROCK

Abso-fucking-loutely blown away!!!

Saturday night-

First time live seeing-  Rollin back,  Nashville to Kentucky

One big holliday was sick.     Got to meet Jim after the show on the sidewalk.  He is the coolest human being on the planet.

NYE- Greatist show in the history of the Universe!

Live theatre to start the show with a see thru curtain in front of the stage.  Jim was searing a leather Sheriffs outfit with chaps and a badge.  The curtain dropped as the intro transitioned to jam of OBH.

THe band was having lots of fun the whole night smiling at each other more than anyother show I've seen.

Monster setlist,  they wore thru the weaker members of the audience after the covers.  The band showed no signs of fatigue.  Mageetah was as full of force as anything all night.  Magical night.  THe best cover was Celebration. They dropped white balloons and turned the lights on and every one was dancing like the world was in perfect balance. I could have stayed there for eternity.

Steam engine was hands down best ever.

Jim was crackin up watchin tommy sing Highway to hell. Priceless!

Carls sax on careless whisper was spot on.

Cobra!  My Campaign worked!

I've never seen Jim jump so high as Easy morning Rebel outro Jam with the horns. Beautiful!

Watching the band bow and exit to "stairway to heaven" over the PA with smoke rollin off the stair case.  Etched in my memory.  Every one dancin  and singing  "As we wind on down the road..."    pure bliss!!

I made a Jacket with EL wire on the back spelling MMJ!  everyone loved it!!

I'm still in awe and will be for the rest of the year.  I know where I'll be every NYE!!  Wherever  MMJ is.

Peace, love to all!!  God bless MMJ!
I will be there when you die!

ms. yvon!! That was such a kickass review! Thanks for taking the time - I can't wait to hear part two. Something about a unicorn?? :)

***edited to add***

And you - LET THE FETUS ROCK! We must've posted at the same time there. Your review kicked ass too!! I love hearing all the color commentary from y'all  ;D

Nice jacket Z man!  I instantly thought of the petition after the first note of Cobra.  Nice going my man!  Coincidence, maybe, maybe not!
