Good point.

Huh? Metallica is one of the biggest bands in the WORLD.  Just so you know.  Even though I dont "get off" on them, I am so fuckin excited to see them.  I was just on the Bonnaroo web site and there are people flying in from Europe, Asia, Aust, S.A. just to see these guys.  If people are willing to do that kinda shit, I want to join them for all the fun!

See ya'll in a week!
God damn those shaky knees.

Additionally, Kanye West is supposedly putting on one of the best live shows now.  I'm not against rap music. In fact, I consider myself included in the 1st generation of white boys raised on Rap Music.
Levon is also playing twice that weekend.  Once on a big stage and again on a small stage.
I'd say , check out Kanye.  You might be surprised.
Jack Johnson is like saltines & milk.   BLAND!!
As far as Metallica goes, I was mistaken about Chris Rock playing between them.  That's a toughy.  I guess I'd leave early.  You gotta weigh your choices.
Question:
Are you going to see MMJ again this year?
Do you give 2 shits about Metallica?
MMJ is known for spectacular sets @ BONER-ooo so i think, being that we are who we are, we wouldn't be FANatics if we skipped 2 seconds of MMJ to catch anyone else.

Well, I havent listened to Metallica really for about 8 years or so now, but Im surprised by how old school those setlists are looking..maybe trying to win back some old school fans?

But I must say, I just remembered the song Bleeding Me and that very well might be my favorite 90s-present Metallica tune..that song, while not the speed metal of early days, is anthematic and I remember not at first giving any respect but after not skipping it or really listening to it, it rocked.

It made me just listen to some clips from Load and Reload, and while theyre by no means great, I think Metallica got thrashed for them a little more than necessary in retrospect. Theyre still very good rock albums

So, did you leave Metallica's set early?

Looks like they played a decent set.

Those who did, could hear the songs very clearly from the Which Stage while waiting on MMJ.  You could see the fireworks, too!

Yes I did leave Metallica about 3/4 of the way thru and I got on the right of the ramp but didn't get as up close as I would have liked.  Metallica was doing such a great set, it was pretty tough to leave.

However it is true it was practically as clear over in front of the Which Stage.   I did even head back to my spot in VIP during the break to grab some rain gear and didn't miss more than a few minutes and could hear the tunes perfect as I ran, so I was so glad they took a break.  I was lucky, I was camped right outside the VIP entrance so I came and went at will.  I had such a great camp site.   VIP was pretty touch and go overall, not sure I'll do it again, but I did take advantage while I was there of the close campsite.

It was amazing that the rain fell right at the start of the set, it seemed almost staged it was so perfect.

I think in retrospect, anyone who missed evven 2 seconds of the MMJ epic performance to catch the end of Metallica missed out.  Metallica came of as desperate and needy.
"Metallica Loves You, Bonnaroo!"
Metallica is(was) violent speed metal.  they really shouldn't love anyone.
Meh.

really? i talked to longtime metallica fans who'd seen them live over 20 times and they all said this was the performance of a lifetime for them...they were smart enough to play all their old stuff and they sounded like they were rockin out...i wouldn't have given up my near front row position for MMJ for anything, but i'm bummed it cost me metallica especially after what i heard
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

Quote...they didn't play anything from Kill Em All.

WHAT?! I just looked at my iPod, and of the entire Metallica discography, 8 of the Top 15 most listened to tracks are from Kill 'Em All. If they don't play the raw shit, I'm gonna be leaving earlier than scheduled.

Well, Metallica had been my favorite band since 1986 (when I got Master of Puppets on vinyl, but they are no longer my favorite band. I have seen Metallica five times, during tours for Master, Black, Load, and St. Anger (x2) prior to seeing them at the Bonnaroo set. I was thoroughly disappointed by the Bonnaroo set. For one, most of James' banter was prewritten and nearly verbatim to previous concert banter (see their recent show in Poland for a very similar transcript). It was a turn-off that Metallica soundchecked for nearly twelve hours and had an army of about 40 soundcheckers. Kirk and Robert seemed to have a good time, but James and Lars appeared businesslike and robotic. The setlist was especially disappointing to me. Lars had voiced that they would play several new songs, and they did not. The set was very similar to the Polish show. I also have a problem with their overreliance on older material, with Metallica playing only 1 song ("The Memory Remains") off of their last four albums (if you include disc 1 of Garage Inc.. I will say that I was quite impressed with Kirk's guitar playing as he nailed several solos (especially during 'fade to black' and 'nothing else matters') that were problematic for him in the past. I feel as if Metallica did nothing to make the Bonnaroo show special and unique from other Metallica shows. It bothers me that Metallica would completely disown their last four studio albums. I have bought every Metallica album, since ...And Justice For All on the day of release, but I will not buy their Rick Rubin-advised effort. I have deleted all their albums and live shows (at least a dozen shows) from my iPod. I will retire my nine Metallica shirts (well, maybe I'll sleep in a few), and I will never again attend a Metallica concert. I skipped Willie Nelson's set in order to work my way up near the rail for the Metallica set. While at the rail, I had to provide security and fend off over-aggressive asshole Metallica fans to protect a young (maybe 12 years old) fan with his middle-aged parents and a Metallica fan who required a walker in order to remain upright. The Metallica crowd provided the only hostile fans that I encountered during all of Bonnaroo (and, being a veteran of hundreds of metal, punk, $ hardcore shows, I have seen some intolerant crowds). Overall, I found the Bonnaroo attendees to be quite peaceful and full of fun energy. I wish that I would have skipped Metallica's set, bought a Bonnaroo raincoat, and gotten a spot close enough to twirl glowsticks and acquire one of the free lucky suckers. Hell, all the Metallica that I needed to see was Kirk Hammett joining My Morning Jacket for "One Big Holiday." I will make sure that the next time that My Morning Jacket plays at Bonnaroo (which I hope is in 2009), that I skip whoever plays before them and get me a spot near the front so I can dance the night away, and hopefully they'll cover "How The Gods Kill." Anyway, Metallica will remain filthy rich and wildly popular. Many will cherish their Metallica Bonnaroo memories. For me, I have dumped Metallica. I will now devote those listening hours to far better music, like Abigal Washburn, My Morning Jacket, and Werewolph. Pearl Jam slaughtered Metallica, anyway. Oh well, at least Kirk joined other bands. I hope he leaves the band and pursues his blues dreams, maybe playing guitar with Tom Waits.

I've not heard any of Abigail Washburn's work outside of the Sparrow Quartet, but I love that group.

Man, that sucks that your favorite band let you down in such a way.  It looks like you've found some closure with it, though.  It doesn't seem like you're too bitter about it, which is cool, you've just moved on.  Thanks for sharing.

Welcome to the board, Jo.
