Holy shit, how amazing was THAT?!?!? Philly became the 2nd city to get impromptu fireworks as they lit up the sky over the Ben Franklin Bridge at the crescendo of Touch Me Part II. Evelyn Is Not Real featured a 30 second pose-off where the guys resembled mannequins. So many amazing moments. The crowd was awesome and the guys really fed off it.

Will write a more detailed post when I come off this adrenaline, I need to go take a deep breath. Those who were at the show, check in with your stories, we got an AMAZING one tonight :D
Say friend, you got any more of that good sasparilla?

doEVILslittle

Evelyn pose-off with Jim breaking his pose to laugh before finishing

cobra->smokin'

war fucking begun

the monster that don dante has grown into

the fireworks with flaspots matching the end of touch me part II (i swear they did)

the misty rain that at times came down hard but mostly just soaked our souls (the weather control continues, Jim also gave a weather forecast of high humidity with a chance of ghosts, don't remember the exact line)

pooch's lady friend (i dunno if this is new or not, but it was cute as all hell, she even willingly held jim's cape after he threw it off for the lay low solo and the roadie put it on her arm)

so many highlights...i'll get back to you tomorrow after i hunt down the pieces of missing flesh and when the ringing in my ears subsides...8th time i've seen the boys, and it gets better everytime

:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Yup, that was me. Who were you? Sorry, I met a bunch of people tonight. It was like a reunion. Found myself on the rail next to a couple I met at Radio City. The people behind us were behind us in Louisville. All in all a crazy night!
Say friend, you got any more of that good sasparilla?

Willplaysguitar

I was the kid in the obama shirt.  we were talking in line and you gave me and my friends a ton of glowsticks (which is much appreciated by the way)

Witness MMJ

j-rud can't wait to hear your story.

Nice to have meet you at DAR Wednesday

Listened to the show on the radio, sounded like a great night

axround3r

WOW what a show gentlemen. Hey Willplaysgeetar im pretty sure i was right behind you in the front row ahaha, i had on a Blue North Carolina Tar Heel Hoodie nice to see you here n there... thanks for the glow sticks  ;D

Anyway that show was freekin amazing, as you can see i cant fall asleep. If i had to choose 3 favorite tracks, Cobra, Phone Went West , and Mageetah but anysong they play is amazing. Jim can really rock that cape and the view of philly and the bridge was spectacular.

What were some of everybodys favorite selections of the night?! lol

tristis

Been more of a lurker on these forums but my son Richard and I were there tonight, right in front of Jim in front of the stage so I had to post.  Richard is 16 and just getting into live shows while I'm way too old and seen many gigs.  Last time I saw a band play for 2 hours without a break and then come on to do a 7 set 30 minute encore was when the Dead were in their heyday.  No doubt MMJ work hard for their living unlike so many musical artists.  Can't wait to hear the soundboard from WXPN's broadcast.

BTW, Sassbox looks great in her pirate outfit.

JerseyRich

Absolutely worth the 2 hour drive from Jersey for this one...

What a great show! The band was having a great time on stage as usual. Great venue and great crowd...Lots of singing along.

See some of ya on NYE!

pjmmj86

Wow what an amazing show. The guys were in the zone tonight.

Highlights:

- Jim with a big smile on his face on the intro riff of Off the Record. How epic was that song?

- Dondante. Holy shit. I loved how they broke down into an almsot metal groove on that song. Sax was ridiculous.

- The War Begun end jam was absolutely nuts

- Gideon

- The rain picking up during the encore. The weather was freakin perfect and Jim and the boys illuminated in the light with the rain coming down during Touch Me Part 2 was epic.

And many more. There were just too many highlights to list. Just an all-around great show with some nice oldies included. The crowd was great and the lights were amazing as usual. One guy I went with never heard them before and had low expectations and got rocked. He thought it was amazing. That's how good these guys are.

jmk

Oh man. Hey, I was right behind you two guys with the glowsticks. Buzzed head, big beard, and a purple shit. Right next to my boy, axround.

What an unbelievable show. My ears are still ringing. Dondante? Laylow? Touch Me Pt. 2? One Big Holiday?

Damn. My second time seeing the boys, and I can't wait to make it 3. Floor seats at MSG on NYE. Oh yes.

And if Noel is on here, it's Jeremy. Gimme a holler. ;)

QuoteBuzzed head, big beard, and a purple shit.

A Jacket show can do strange things to people for sure...
The trouble with the straight and the narrow is it's so thin, I keep sliding off to the side

JLuke

I'm hungover this morning and didn't drink last night. I think that sums up my experience pretty well.

brkndwnbus

The show was better than D.C. in my opinion. It was one of the best shows I've been to. I was pumped to get "War Begun," "Evelyn is Not Real," and "Cobra" on the same set. "Phone Went West" was excellent as well. It was a long drive back to Damascus though. With the rain, it took about 2hrs and 25mins. However, more than worth it.

alright man! I met you too, I helped ya over the guardrail after you grabbed those picks,

that concert was out of control! unbelievable!

only bummer was some of the fans around me, the one kid i think was going to die and his friend refused to take him in the back and this group just talked the entire friggin time.  next time I think i'll try to get front row because I started second row and wound up being pushed back to the 5 or so
Oh I'll never say I knew you, but my heart can't wait to meet you on the other side

Easily the best show of the summer for me (obviously not including the epic roo set). My body is still destroyed from last night. The crowd was amazing which to me makes or breaks the show. Everybody was dancing,   it was like one big party. Finally got my war begun and let me say it was well worth the wait, almost teared up during it.  War begun, phone went west was just pure insanity.  The dondante jam was out of this world.  Cobra was just the icing on the cake.

Thank you MMJ for an incredible summer, see you on NYE!!!
Stolen as the war begun, this time your soul is my one.

HUGE REVIEW AHEAD, unedited so there might be some rambling or run-ons :P

First off, let it be known that this band in fact has the power to control rain, it was supposed to start raining in the middle of the night last night and the mere presence of this band brought it early and it hasn't started raining yet today because of those few early Jacket clouds got ahead of the rest of the storm...I believe in Jacket rain....you all should could to know it's power. Now let's get into this

So they start off with Anytime, Aluminum Park, Off the Record and Evil Urges and set the effing tone...they came to Philly to do business. Sidenote, Before the show I noticed the MMJ mascot Pooch has a new lady friend (who I would like everyone to refer to as Poochette), the couple is adorable and I hope they get to some lovin and can bring us some lil pooches in the future.

Then comes Touch Me part 1 and everyone falls into the groove, some people might still be feeling it out, but the connection with the band is met and we all sink back into Jim's familiar Philly beanbag chair. This connection is strengthened by the raucous WAWM and two halves, then comes Golden...

The song is unstoppably gorgeous and that's when EVERYONE is locked in and become one in this artist/listener relationship.
I'm amazed kicks off the second half of the set followed by evelyn...fucking evelyn...words can't express how happy I was to hear an old favorite like. It crawled into my ears like never before and it grabbed my soul and held me there in that moment, much like the moment the boys held their positions in silence for something like 30 seconds while the crowd freaked out. Finally Jim couldn't contain himself and cracked a smile and led them out in the last note of the song (and this wasn't even the best part of the concert). Sec Walkin got me thinking they were gonna start mixing things up with old and new...and so they did...with WAR BEGUN.

Tom started laying down the bass groove on his own and I started jumping and screaming amidst an at the time quiet crowd... (I was two people from the front just a step to the right of Jim, so If you saw me, you know I was a blur the whole show). I'm pretty sure Jimmy and the boys felt my excitement as only the bass was playing and I was flipping. That solo is etched in my eardrums forever...thank you My Morning Jacket.

After another amazing performance of Phone Went West followed by Librarian, they whipped out a fucking monster version of Dondante. Around the time of Roo and RCMH they started adding that droning riff to the end solo and I couldn't help but think everytime I see this band live, that song grows longer and more complex than the version before it. Last night blew all expectations of growth out of the fucking universe. That middle section before Jim's usual high-pitched two note riff before the sax was pure insanity. I knew those boys had it in them to really break ground with a song like this.

Gideon, Lay low (with cape holding assistance by Poochette) and the best version of Mahgeetah, my first mmj song, I've ever seen closed out the set.
Wordless Chorus is a perfect encore opener and then the boys just funked it all up. Highly Suspicious is a beast all on it's own with it's fun as hell to sing along to lyrics and insanely thick solo but to follow it with Cobra...dear lord.  Come to think of it, follow it with Cobra->Smokin->touch me pt II->Run Thru.....HOLY MOTHER OF GOD.

Those fireworks started going of and subsequently finished within one song (that being pt. 2) and I swear those flashpots at the end matched up with the omnichord at the end of the song. All in all though it had to be a coincidence because there was a moment where jim looked up at the 'works as if to say "o fucking aaaaaweeeesooome."

The instant after the scream let out at the end of part 2 the stage literally exploded with the force of a fucking nuke, death and destruction all around me with only My Morning Jacket left standing and Jim James pleading "oh shit run." Dear god this song (and what was to follow) just shakes me...my physical state evaporated into the sweat spit and noise of the air and I was a rocking machine with my brethren in Jacket.

Then One Big Holiday.

Through most show reviews on this board I've noticed that no one really talks about this song as often as they should be. I think it's almost an unwritten rule that you don't talk about OBH because you simply can't describe it. I will say this though. I literally shake while I see/hear this song and after because I can't contain whatever it is/was that was coming out of me...that's all I can say. I finish with this:

Through most of my life, I'm usually a subdued, off-handedly sarcastic and otherwise laid back person. However, when I witness this band live something comes out of me that turns me into this fluid, rocking animal and my heart flutters and a familiar ice runs through my veins and my body reacts to the cold and I become flushed and chilled all at once. The 8 times I've seen them, I've release the most energy I've ever exuded at anytime. This band moves people, every living being who is there, even the drunk and stoned assholes at some point all channel through this funnel these five men create and all of us become one in a fixed celebration of happiness.

Amen. Thank you

October

quick review from me, longer review later.

pros:

war begun, evelyn, phone, cobra - awesome.

sister - was her first show and it's always great being with somebody when they see the jacket for the first time.  i think she was impressed

songs being reworked - it was really nice to see how many songs had been reworked, just between rcmh and now.  to my recollection, thank you too!, dondante, phone went west, and a few others had all been changed around a bit.  love to see the band trying new things

my location - somehow, we managed to plop ourselves second row, directly in front of carl.  usually i go for jim's side, but this was a treat.  since i've seen mmj a bunch, i really just tried to focus on carl and tommy last night.  carl is a great musician with a lot of energy and i enjoyed being up close for his solos all night.  three cheers for broemel.

weather - held out until the end there when we got a much needed shower

cons:

crowd - i actually didn't think the crowd was that great, at least where i was standing (2nd row, directly in front of carl).  the band is definitely more popular these days, and this is no reflection on the band, but popularity brings some, well, less savory folks out to shows.  for example: people talking about baseball all night and not listening to the music, meatheads drinking too much and almost fighting during evelyn, girls who insist on screaming because they don't know the lyrics, screaming so loud that it hurts the ears even with plugs in.  it's a concert, i understand, but it's still a complaint.

glow sticks - maybe they look cool, but which assholes keep chucking them at the band all night. lame lame lame

predictability - it comes with seeing the band so many times, but i'm still waiting for the day when i can go to a jacket show and really not know what's coming.  they definitely have the catalogue, just open it up a little.  yes, this is severely nit-picky, but when you see a ton of shows, it just gets that way.  i generally know which songs to expect in the first half, which to expect in the second half and which to expect in the encore.  i know the crowds love laylow and dondante and obh, and so do i, but how bout making some new tunes crowd pleasers, like O is the One, Strangulation, Dancefloors and changing up those openers and closers.  *they have made a little progress here lately*

acoustic jacket -  where have you gone?  what really got me into this band years ago was the country/acoustic/folk of Tenn. Fire and At Dawn.  i would love to see the acoustic guitar come out more during these recent shows, but my feeling is that the band knows how much acoustic songs tend to kill energy with larger crowds.  who wouldn't have loved to hear butch cassidy, by my car, needed it most, where to begin, i will be there, old sept blues, or something like that last night.

i know my cons are nitpicks, but it was a great show and i will continue to see mmj whenever they come near.  my final thought is that i was incredibly close, which was great, but it just didn't match rcmh for me, which says a lot because i was sitting near the back at rcmh.

see you next time

C-Bear

for example: people talking about baseball all night and not listening to the music, meatheads drinking too much and almost fighting during evelyn,

Yeah my husband & I were in front of these kids screaming "play something old" and when Evelyn came on, they didn't budge. Not to say you have to be crazy but really if your screaming Free Bird know when to back it up!! At RCMH,  people were talking about shoes, KY show people talking about Pizza. You just can't stop it- I guess its what you get when MMJ play festival venues.
I was the chick next to your sister, hope she had a killer show.

Hoping for Berlin see you @ NYE
