YouAre_GivenToFly

i'm saving my review and thoughts of this show for an epic post about my summer with MMJ.

I will say that this philly show was a greaet way to end it. A reunion of sorts, meeting and being recognized by people from Louisville and Radio City, and seeing a guy I talked to at a Wilco show in August.

The wind blew me back, via Chicago, in the middle of the night.

YouAre_GivenToFly

Went upto NYC for the Phillies/Mets game yesterday... ran into Jim James in the Disney store of all places...

well, i've waited a few days to think about it over and over, but i still feel pretty disappointed with the show in philly. i've been seeing these guys since '05, and this was the first time i've walked away disappointed.

they just seemed tired, and perhaps a little uninspired. jim particularly, seemed to be spent, and that is very UNDERSTANDABLE.

i realize what these guys put into each and every show, and after the run they had been on, it's very understandable.

the west coast is in for a nice treat, as they are getting some well deserved rest and surely will come out on fire again.

cheers boys, keep at it, and keep enjoying it....because i plan to do the same!!

i will forever be thankful for the bonnaroo and rcmh shows this year.

i am confused- were we at the same show? You have been going to many more shows than myself (only saw 2)  but I feel like they showed just as much energy as RCMH and i feel even more so because I was much closer at philly than RC.  To each his own I suppose. Either way, I'm very sorry you were disappointed :-/
Oh I'll never say I knew you, but my heart can't wait to meet you on the other side

just my opinion, and yes i have seen many shows. the way jim flew around rcmh, up and down the side rafters can not be matched...hell he didn't even make it to carl's side of the stage in philly.

but as i said, it's understandable, completely. and you certainly don't have to be sorry...it happens. you can't put on the best show ever every night...although these guys have done it the most of pretty much any other band i've seen.

mustaches are way cool.

im going to have to agree to disagree lasvegas, i thought the philly show was much better then radio city.  maybe they were more tired in philly and understandbly so.  but i thought they were just more on in philly, just nailing songs.  i don't really go to shows to see jim run around on stage, i go for the music and to me philly was hands down better musically then radio city.  i think playing the evil urges material live for a couple of months also played a big role in why i thought philly was so much better.
Stolen as the war begun, this time your soul is my one.

i'll say it again, its just my opinion...an opinioned based on seeing these guys over and over.

i don't go to shows to see jj run around either, but in my experience, the shows in which he does this, are the most raging fun, intense shows.

late night bonnaroo '06, roseland ballroom nyc '06, late night bonnaroo this year - all bubbling over with energy. philly just wasn't.

yeah its great to hear them really nail a bunch of new songs, but give me 3 or 4 old ragers that arent perfect, over that anyday.

it's nothing against the band like i keep saying, and it wasn't only jj, it's just he is the one who is the most visible. hell everyone looked beat up there in philly. even patrick...i know i was shocked too.

for me:
music + energy = live shows

and yes the music was tight, but the energy was not there.

i thought the philly crowd was more into it than the boston crowd
but come on...there's nothing sexy about poop. Nothing.  -bbill

i understand where you are coming from, I was hoping JJ came over towards Carls side (thats where we were, right in front of Carl- he flashed some smiles too)  You can't beat JJ running up the side of RCMH- that was just magical, but I loved how he was standing on that box in the front of the stage leaning over the crowd- giving everyone big smiles and getting them all involved in the experience-  I think that while they may have been tired- that tired performance beats any other show I have been to.  And that, is just fucking awesome.

Yeah, I thought the Philly crowd was really into it too! Everyone around us was dancing and singing!!! Totally just feeding off the energy MMJ was giving. It was only my 5th MMJ show but I thought the energy was high. Maybe because I was so close to the stage!!!  :D :D

i seldom post here but have seen MMJ many many times. this summer i was at bonnaroo, followed just days later at Radio City front row right in front of JJ, and philly.

there are no words to describe this band. none.

i am so thankful they are around.

suppose it is my turn to add my story to the mix. my buddy has a buddy who has a place in philly, we thought it was closer to the venue than it actually is. cabbed in and went to dave and busters first because i have never been to one. i intended on getting over to the river deck before the show to meet some of you but that never happened. i kept winning that light game where you have to hit the button and stop the light between the 2 neon things. my friend and i won it so much we had tickets bursting out of our pockets. so we decided to turn in the tickets for some pint glasses and then head to the show. damn we are stupid, no glass allowed. so we hid the glasses under the blue fence, never expecting to see them again. so now we go inside the gates, im expecting the crowd to already be big and i was gonna be happy with maybe being 15 rows back. but to my surprise i got 2nd or 3rd row right in front of jim's mic. im pretty sure i saw some of you but never actually made contact. youare_giventofly was right up front i think, and i saw sassbox the patched one, i think that was you at least. but i never got close enough to chat. still good to at least SEE you guys haha. anyways the dude in front of me was named pete and he had a VIP ticket and hooked us up with free beer. thanks pete, you are the man. his friends were cool too. the show was awesome, i had never been that close to them on stage, it was totally awesome. i wont waste my time describing the show, it was amazing, that is all. when it ended we stood there hoping for a pic or list or something, we got nothing but thats cool. on the way we went to the fence and reached under. holy f! our glasses were still there. yay. now its pouring and my friend promised to meet his buddy in town, so we went to south street. sorry jerseydan and all those who went to silk city, i could not make it. after a short stay it was time to figure out how to get back to our car, which was parked in the middle of a road somewhere on braod street. i guess the 2hr time limit does not apply to cars parked in the middle of the road. you cant do that where im from but o well haha. we finally got a cab, the driver was blasting techno, good for him. got in car, drove car home, passed out and slept  for a long time.

i had so much fun, wish i couldve met more of you guys. i sang along with you though. i'll see you at mmjnyemsg.

in an unrelated note, i attended the nascar race in richmond on sunday and struck up a convo with some gal from that area. she was cool, i mentioned i was from upstate ny and she told me with a straight face that she 'didnt like yankees.' haha, o well, i liked her! i also ate at a waffle house for the first time in my life. and it was good.

i left a few parts out, including the pee cig, cause im afraid that one of you might be the unfortunate victim of this completely accidental, hilarious happening. (if your cig tasted/smelled like pee, im sorry)

It was a Kermit/Jim's voice joke... hence the picture of Kermit with a banjo.

But yes I did meet Jim and the boys, Wednesday after the DC show.

hey, philly peeps!

before the waterfront show i ordered some stickers that i'd planned to pass out at the concert.  in lieu of pm-img each of you that i met, thought i'd throw a blanket post in here.  this way anyone who might want one the stickers can get one.   :D

they say:  RAMPANT BADASSERY  on them.  they've finally arrived and they are pretty rad!  if you want one, just send me a self-addressed stamped envelope.  the sticker will fit in a letter sized envelope (4 x 9 in)

to get my address, PM me.

i've got 100 of these stickers and will pass them out after the upcoming shows (portland, seattle, los angeles)  until they are gone.  for the love of pete, please don't put the stickers on anything at the venues.

**THE STICKERS HAVE NO MMJ LOGOS OR TEXT ON THEM, AND ARE NOT CONNECTED TO THE BAND AT ALL--this is strictly the descriptive line i'm giving this tour.  every tour, really, but let's not quibble.**    [smiley=beer.gif]
