While I totally understand the desire to hear classics, I dont think anyone has mentioned energy and continuity as another reason the setlists are generally similar. The best thing about an MMJ show is the energy. I get blown away by every song they do, but the freaks like us are the minority. The average fans heart wont explode in his chest when he hears I Will Be There When You Die or By My Car. I think the setlists are carefully constructed to keep the energy flowing. You take out Lay Low and One Big Holiday for Nashville to Kentucky and Picture of You and all of a sudden you have a rather large chunk of the energy removed from the show.

There will be times the band digs deeper into the catalog, but those are special occasions. You also have to remember that even though you are "doing this because (you) care", your thoughts are still merely your own opinion. What you prefer may not be what everyone prefers. And yes, some tunes, like OBH in particular, should be played every night. Every. Fucking. Night.

And as long as we're on the subject of Rarity V Regular, Im going to throw out a New Years request for Chills. Ya know...if anyone is listening...
Say friend, you got any more of that good sasparilla?

evenflo46

im personally not complaining, i attended the atlanta show ad we got remnants, cobra, war begun, evelyn, and the bear. I do think its very interesting that every show after the atlanta show featured less songs, in fact atl had 28 songs, followed by the florida shows getting less than 25, they may have gone too hard to fast at the beginning of this tour.

good point...on the whole energy thing, but it doesn't cut it.  Sorry, Sec Walkin', Thank You Too, Two Halves, Smookin' all don't have THAT much energy in them.  dont get me wrong, I love all those songs, but they're no OBH.  So change out songs with energy for other songs with energy.  Change out Wordless for Cobra. Change out Way That he Sings for Lowdown.  Change out Phone Went West...actually dont change out that song, I fuckin' love that song live.  Change out OBH for It's About Twilight.  Change Libriarian for Think Im Going to Hell.   Maghetta for Easy Morning Rebel etc.

I know what ya'll are saying.  I understand the reasoning for not playing some of the other classics but I guess I was just wanting something more from the band - something to get excited about again.  With that said - I still think they need to change it up a little bit.  Just a little man.

God damn those shaky knees.

QuoteA lot of bitchin on here about honest comments.  I just read reviews from Boston that werent all that glowing.  Someone is even calling for the band to come back after their break with new setlists.

They have elevated their game to a point that a lot of us are watching and listening to what they are doing everyday.  I just see them getting better as they rotate a songs on a consistent basis verse the same songs over and over.  Extending a song or two that does not nomally go past 4 minutes would be a highlight too.

Maybe the energy wasn't there in Boston because they're BORED of playing the same fucking songs in the same fuckin order.
God damn those shaky knees.

you know, all your complaining and moaning has absolutely no bearing on anything the band does. So why not stop? We heard your opinion.

They opened with Anytime Friday night and Magheetah last night (and Touch Me in Miami). So, when you say they're BORED of playing the same fucking songs in the same fuckin order you are LYING. You are making this worse than you think it is by simply making shit up.

Start your own band, go on your own tour, play your own set list.
Otherwise, sit back an admire the magic you can only dream about.

Have some respect man, you're being a baby.

I have seen this band 4 times on this tour.  Bonnaroo, Radio City, DC and Boston.  Each show was quite different, but the staples were indeed the newer songs.  That being said, I have found that the shows I have attended mixed up the newer songs too.  Magheeta was played last night not in DC.  Evelyn, Aluminum Park but not the Librarian were played in Boston not DC.  The Bear at Radio City.   Wonderful man at neither.

I've seen a serious mix of old and new stuff, covers and I've been quite satisfied.  I would like to see Golden, Off the Record swapped out for say Just one Thing, By My Car, Butch Cassidy, At Dawn Strangulation, but I suspect the band will not stop touring and these songs will be back.  Look at Pearl Jams recent tour, there were no new songs to plug so they hit the back catalog, I suspect MMJ will follow that recipe but this chapter needs to happen.  Lots of new people seeing the band, newer bigger places, the newer stuff plays pretty well there.

I suspect that NYE will give us a lot of these rarities, as Radio City did not, and my fingers remain crossed.  This band  is just getting going and this tour will go on for a long time once the window of promoting the cd passes, the songs will rotate.  Even the Dead played the newer stuff when they had some, the complaints were the same for decades.   This is the same thread that PJ fans had in 06.  Its part of the business, they still have to sell records.  Wilco just did a run in Chicago that included the entire catalog....we've got time for all these types projects right now its about Evil Urges.

I've been to 13 shows. I've heard Golden 13 times. I've heard Mahgeetah, Off The Record, Dondante, and One Big Holiday 12 times. I've heard Run Thru, Lay Low, and Anytime 11 times. I've heard The Way That He Sings, Wordless Chorus, and Gideon 10 times. And so forth.

...and all I can say is... ENCORE!

Quotegood Lord, you people sound like you are actually attending every one of the shows on the tour and that's why you are upset about the same set lists.

No, you're upset b/c the songs they are playing, for other people, don't have enough variety.

baffling

i beg to differ. . .

I went to the Atlanta and Myrtle shows, I was not expecting to get an entire new show at HOB, but when we did not get ONE different song than in Atl, I could not help, but be a little disappointed.  Or frustrated to say the least.  I just think they are really capable of mixing it up more and would love to see.  I have seen them 15 Xs now and want to see them more.   I want to follow this band around and go to more than one show per tour, but that just is not gonna happen if they don't  throw a lil variety at us.  And I don't think it is a bad thing for some of us to feel like this.  I swear, some of yall act like they can do no wrong and get offended at the slightest criticism (not directed at who I quoted).  There is my rant.

this is a great thread...good opinions from all.  I am looking forward to Bozeman!

Imagine your mom spent all day making a meatloaf.  She prepared it special just for you.  She put all the perfect ingredients in it and then cut some potatoes, mashed them up, put some garlic, butter and cream in them.  Then she shucked some corn and boiled it.   She put some sun tea in a big jar outside, set the table and then put a pie in the oven, that she spent hours on, just so that it would come out nice a warm just in time for dessert.   Then you came home from drinking and having fun all day, and said, "Damn, Mom, I wanted fried chicken and peas."   You ingreatful bastards.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

That's the response I imagine you will be getting.  ;)

Understand I'm not 100% serious.  A lot of the time, i'm playing devils advocate.  I love this band with all my heart and support them to the fullest.  But sometimes it's fun to debate and discuss things in which you love.  Like I said before...it's only cause i care.

PS: you sound like a baby bitching about me sounding like a baby.  BABY!!!!

"...and the night before...and the night before, and the night before...oh but wait, this night you made roasted potatoes not mashed, and I really liked that! Hey mom, can we have something different for dinner tonight.  It's not that I don't appreciate your cooking, in fact I LOVE your meatloaf, but if  you have meatloaf night after night you can get kind of sick of it.
Do you make meatloaf EVERY NIGHT because you know people will like it?  Sometimes people need to taste your other styles of cooking, because your other styles of cooking are just as tasty.   Just switch it up a little. Your an amazing cook and I know your capable of doing so.  I love you. I always will.  Thank you for all the wonderful food you have given me!  I am very grateful of everything."

At the recent shows I attended we had They Ran, At Dawn, Lowdown and Dancefloors, now they are playing other tracks such as War Begun, Cobra etc so I reckon they are doing a pretty good job of mixing up the set lists, considering they have to play several tracks from the new album as well as the old favourites.

to the point where you just make shit up? You're that guy, the guy who goes on a band's message board and tries to stir shit up, then claims to be on board with whatever the band does. You're a piece of work.

my final word on this nonsense (again)

Start your own band, go on your own tour, play your own set list.

in the meantime (ie, until the end of time) be thankful you get anything from MMJ. You're a fan, you're not in the band. Figure it out.
