Finally recovering and have my mind around what happened on Thursday.  First off.....Highly Suspicious into a longer intro to Cobra to Steam Engine was fantastic.  But I'm getting ahead of myself.

Was about 20th in line at 3:30ish and met some cool cats (see you guys at Dr Dog?)....I bought down my portable PA system and played some deep MMJ tracks ( Get Down on IT!,  Oh Sweet Nuthin, etc), I was repaid with free beer (thank you!!)....sound check was pretty cool( 10 or so songs with nashville to kentucky). I guess I should've gone down to the lower entrance to get in on the soundcheck party though (lucky bastard, BlackMamba).

We all raced in and we were about 6th row left, the closest I've ever been at Red Rocks.  We had 12 people strong including mtngurl & ahydell from the forum (heard there was a crispy sighting too) so it was a blast to have a group to stake some area to jam in. Black Keys absolutely tore it up, they did their best with the time allotted but it is nothing like their full show (they are on tour, go see them), they have much deeper tracks and range...

The pace of the MMJ show was perfect...just when i felt somewhat tired, Jim and the gang ratcheted it up a notch.  First ratchet was I'm Amazed (the bassline there was awesome, great song live))...then War Begun ( i saw fireworks)/Lay Low really got things going.  Ascending peaks at Phone Went West then Smokin/Touch Me 2 were unreal.

After seeing them here last year with Bob Dylan, you could tell it was special for them to be playing here, it was not just another show.

During Steam Engine there was a prolonged trippy scene with Jim and a white tiger's mask praying on his knees for a good 30 seconds.  My thought at the time was he was definitely paying tribute to the sacred grounds of Red Rocks, and even maybe he was trying to get the crowd to get on their knees as well.......it's not a stretch to believe that there is not much difference between Native American tribal ceremony and a  Red Rocks show of this nature.  Everyone in the audience and band was in awe of the surrounding scene, and in our own way we wanted to thank a higher power for the experience.

And the guys brought forward their version of the best tribute encore possible. Wordless Chorus/Highly Suspicious/...Cobra....Steam Engine!...then just a ramp up to One Big Holiday with Run Thru and Dancefloors.

We were all nearly out of breath when we stumbled down to get our posters....1 per person wristband which wasn't that inconvenient.  We had enough friends to nab a few extras...

I've been to a lot of shows over the years and this one will stay in the forefront of my memories....

See everyone at the next one,

Dave

Epic indeed.  Can't believe it's almost been a week!   :'(

Rowdy Roddy (Dave)- Well put man!! It was a night for the history books for many of us and no doubt the band too! I read that you said you were able to get an extra poster or two? That's where I messed up this year. In our amazement, we spaced the merch tent. I'm really searching for a poster to frame for our room (or wherever- it'll make any room shine!). We have a Bob Dylan/MMJ poster from Telluride new condition)that I'd love to trade you for the Red Rocks poster, or hell, if you didn't go to that one maybe we can still talk. Let me know if anything interests ya!

Thanks for the kind words...I'm still buzzing from the show and have listened to the show via taping in its entirety twice.  unfortunately my extra went to trade for a bonnaroo.  And I went to the telluride show and was able to nab one of those too.  I need to frame them all as a set i think...

I'll definitely keep an eye out, check out expressobeans for people willing to trade and I'll do the same....I have some other friends that missed out on the poster as well and they are looking my way for an extra.....just a rare poster for a great show....

For everyone, just make it a rule ALWAYS buy a poster for every concert you go to.  Repeat, make it a rule. If you don't want it as a memento, someone else will.

Thanks for the response RowdyRoddy. Damn good advice, I must say! We hit the Wilco Grand Junction show in April and didn't nab one there either ("we shouldn't spend the cash"). You always regret that move. Live and learn, right?! I will try espressobeans and thanks again for info and your time man. Hopefully there's a "next year" (at Red Rocks) to correct my ways. I love the whole wristband deal though. No fretting the spilled beer or random passerby in the dark or inevitable freak dancing! I just started my 2nd spin through the show too. I must say The Black Keys set sounds great too!
