Readings, Music & Benefit Reception in Louisville

For the love of the land
It might, at first blush, seem to be a strange pairing — scholar-author Wendell Berry and singer-songwriter Yim Yames (aka Jim James of My Morning Jacket) — but both are poets with an abiding reverence for the land from which they have sprung.

With that in mind, Kentuckians for the Commonwealth will present the men in an evening of readings and music in an effort to raise funds for and awareness of the effects of coal mining via mountain-top removal.

The event will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, at 21c Museum Hotel, 700 W. Main St., and tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at door. Tickets for a private reception with Berry and Yames — which is limited to 90 guests and includes a signed copy of the book "Plundering Appalachia" by contributors Berry, Reece, Howell and Blanton — are $150, and include admission to the event. The reception begins at 5 p.m.

I'm SO there. Wendell Berry is a local hero and a personal hero of mine. I hear that Yim guy's pretty cool, too. ;)

Don't know if I'll pay that much for the reception and signed book though. Hmmmm......

I've never stayed there before, but I've been to the bar before. Seems really nice...and kinda hip.

We have a cabin on one of my family's farms in west Kentucky (Jacketfest 2010,anybody!?), so I'll be there all weekend. But I'll be coming back that Sunday in time to meet some peeps and go to the show.

Difficult to say. I don't know how many tickets are being sold. However, I haven't heard much pub about this so I would think it will take a bit to sell out if it does. But that's just a hunch. I'm also not sure what kind of crowds Wendell Berry pulls tho.

Daniel Martin Moore is playing too! It wouldn't surprise me if Ben Sollee didn't show up too.
Looks like tickets go on sale at 5pm Friday the 13th.
