Quote"Jim and Carl turn up the guitars to 11 Spinal Tap style and then rock your face off.  they don't need to play like Hendrix, or Van Halen, or so and so...they just f'in rock.  their rock isn't pretentious and it doesn't take a guitar master to be able to play it, but its fun, its  loud and its real."

See, this is a good example of why they should just contact the members of the forum to write about the band.  I would have much rather seen that in Rolling Stone.  Good stuff.

thank you!
If you're lucky, MMJ will fill the void you didn't even know you ever had. If you're luckier, you'll get to see them live.

DaFunkyPrecedent

personally, i think Jim and Carl can play the guitar real well.  anyone else agree??

this is OUR band, not Rolling Stones.  Im sure Phish fans who read Rolling Stone are asking 'where's Tre?' Fuck the review...just be happy more people will see the name My Morning Jacket and be interested.  Someday people will get it.  i know it.

But I agree, the review didn't represent very well...and it did piss me off.  I JUST DONT KNOW HOW I FEEL! AHHHH.

Barroom rock? "bars are dark and lonely" right?
God damn those shaky knees.

QuoteI would like to see a good barroom brawl while "lil Billy" was being played really loud.

Can't believe this hasn't been pointed out but if you actually READ the article at the beginning Fricke states

"This celebration differs from our 2003 survey, 'The 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,' in some ways. The guitarists here are, by the measure of rock's extended history, new, Most under forty, and all have made their impact in the last two decades. Also, THERE IS NO RANKING.  Numbered lists can be fun; we still get blowback from last time about who should have been...." blah blah blah

Who would actually put Mayer #1 anyway?

Jaimoe

Under the criteria the list is pretty good. Randolph and even the fading Ben Harper should have been on the list. I believe Junior Brown made the 2003 100 Greatest list or else he's a nobrainer for this one. All the bands/artists remain active too which makes sense. Luther Dickenson is still riding out the influence and impact of the Allstars first album since all the studio releases since suck ass - his brother Cody is a more interesting musician. Too bad the list stuck mainly to rock acts but then again, RS was once a revered rock magazine. I would have dropped Al from moe.. He's boring.

Oh yeah, the earlier post calling Stevie Ray Vaughan a "Hendrix imitator" is wrong. Stevie loved Jimi (what guitarist doesn't?), but Stevie's style was rooted in Texas blues where Jimi channeled Chicago blues via outer-space. Stevie was far more bluesy than Jimi too.

Prince is not a "New" guitar God. Neither is Warren Haynes, but at least Haynes is still something 'current' and happening in terms of productivity.

John Mayer absolutely deserves to be on the list, and I don't mind seeing him at No. 1, either. The kid may have had some shitty songs back in the day, but that shouldn't effect how he's listed as a guitarist. Check out the 'Crossroads' DVD's... He puts up a damn good fight on stage with Buddy Guy, BB King, and Eric Clapton.

Personally, I feel Jim and Carl should be listed individually... but I don't want to be the one to have to choose one over the other.

:D

what a fucking joke!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!John "pretty boy"Mayer..never heard one thing by that shit head....never plan to..goes against everything I stand for...everyone should check out Paste magazine...it's what RS use to be

Uhhh, yeah, that doesn't make much sense dude.
I'm digging, digging deep in myself, but who needs a shovel when you have a little boy like mine.

Um...right. I saw Mayer live as Herbie Hancocks Guitar player, and he fucking killed. And like others said, if you never heard anything by him, how the hell would you even know if he was a good guitar player. This is one of the stupidest things I have ever read.
Some girls mothers are bigger than others girls mothers...

Jaimoe

Every time I've seen video of Mayer live, he kills on guitar no matter what mush he's playing. To repeat: THE LIST IS IN NO ORDER!

jack_ass

i, personally, was ecstatic to see jim and carl included in the list, the addition of carl was what put this band over the top in my mind (no disrespect to the earlier guys and certainly not to jim, but carl breathes a great new life into the band), we all worship the jacket, not everyone is as sold as we are and RS is hardcore mainstream, but they are, and have been, big fucking buisness for a long long long time. i'd go money that jim and carl are pretty pleased to be included in such good company, as far as mayer goes, i think his songs suck ass, but that kid can play his ass off, randolph and harper should have been on there, maybe kenny wayne also, i saw him open for dylan and he rocked voodoo chile like the ghost of jesus h. hendrix was in him, also j. mascias, but he's not really that young either. it is all subjective though. opinions are like assholes, the RS list was NOT ordered and our heroes (lay low at the tabernacle made me a firm believer) get yet another mention in mainstream media, WTF more can you ask for, peace bitches, sorry for the rant, cya in 2 weeks--athens night 2 and asheville baby!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ya'll need to check out DBT at the 40 watt, and at the handlebar in my homeplace!!!!!
m. ward at the orange peel!!! son volt too!!!!

DaFunkyPrecedent

Mayers cool in my book.  his new album is solid and he really CAN play the guitar.  I mean fuck - he closed out the Telluride Blues and Brews Fest - making Lou Fucking Reed play infront of him.  thats a fuckin honor in itself, not to mention all the people he's shared a stage with.  We should ask Herbie Hancock and Keb Mo if they think Mayer sucks...

why he's #1 - he's mainstream and he's really really fucking good.
God damn those shaky knees.

For the 4th time, the list is in no order.

John Frusciante was a guitar God 16 years ago when he was 21 years old when the Peppers released Blood Sugar Sex Magik.  (even 18 if you count mothers milk)

Dean and Robert DeLeo of Army of Anyone (ex Stone Temple Pilots) need that nod most definately.

Mayer shouldn't be # 1 though.  Why is he #1? Is the list in order or what?!

i know i might get slated for this but had that list been in order i would've had Johnny Greenwood and Ed O'Brien much much much higher and maybe even add Thom Yorke with them. In my opinion they are 3 of the most original envelope pushing guitarists out there. Especially Greenwood. if you look on guitargeek.com you can see what pedals he has. he has a home made one on there. point is he knows his stuff, his technology and that's why Radiohead will be one of the most influential bands of the current century...and possible last century.
