Well O, personally, I can't compare them to Nick Cave.  Ok they also make rather dark, black music, but they completely have their own sound, and nowadays this is hard to find. Besides this,  I really like the voice of the singer.  A warm melancholic deep voice, with a lot of force in it. But now and then, as we know, musical taste differs from person to person .

Sal Paradise

Neil Young - On The Beach

It's truly brilliant!
The sound in your mind is the first sound that you could sing

lfish

I follow you completely in this one Sal. I find it his best album.  So much atmosphere and the cover of the album is just brilliant.  It's getting me always in the mood.

And revolution blues, what a song, wow those lyrics, just awesome.  And I haven't even mentionned ambulance blues.

It's strange because all the fans claim this record to be one of the best young has ever made, but he himself denies it.  For him this record brings back miserable feelings.  He just had to bear the loss of danny whitten (his guitarist) and bruce berry(his roadie).  And he himself was a total wreck.  And you can hear all this on on the beach and on his next album tonight's the night.

If you don't know this album, get it and it will change your life!!!!

Good call, guys! For years, I only had the vinyl, then a CD recorded from the vinyl. I'm so glad Neil finally gave the go-ahead to re-release that album. It is definitely one of my favorites from him. ;)
You came around when I needed you, now I'm up to my neck in you.

"See the Sky About to Rain".....with Levon Helm's signature drums....a masterpiece!!!!!!!!!

lfish

Yeah your definitely right over there.  I find "when the sky's about to rain" very well suiting with the cover. Neil young standing on the beach with a cloudy rainy sky above him, his head hanging a little bit down.  Just beautifull.  This is one of those moments where I find the cover at least so important as the music itself. This one song is so meaningfull for the mood neil young was in.

The Decemberists
Just found out about this band and I highly recommend them.  I picked up all 3 of their cd's and went and saw one of their shows in L.A. (1/17/04)  You can listen to some of their stuff from Hush Records. (esp. Shiny)

There was some kind of video for that with Vincent Price wasn't there?  I remember seeing something on PBS - or that may have been a hallucination - sometimes my memory of events from the late 70s get a bit cloudy ;)

The late 70s are fine, its everything else since then that's gone and forgotten, for me.
