Neutral Milk Hotel

In the Aeroplane is one of the best records of all time.  I hope Jeff starts writing and recording music like that again.
shake some action

hipkink

I agree with the Neutral Milk Hotel. It's rare that someone can write lyrics that are so sexual, and yet so beautiful. It's hard to keep stuff from sounding dirty. But he does it so well.
You came around when I needed you, now I'm up to my neck in you.

peanut butter puddin surprise

What is funny about NMH is that I was in the Army with a guy named Jeff Mangum...it couldn't be him, it just couldn't!
Runnin' from somethin' that isn't there

marktwain

Have y'all heard Jeff Mangum-Live at Jittery Joe's?
It's definitely not as good as studio albums, but it's fun and interesting.  You can hear a baby crying in the audience quite a bit.  He does King of Carrot Flowers before it is complete, and one verse goes "...this is the part where I didn't write any lyrics..."
Anyway, i just love live albums.  Can't wait for MMJ's. (though I've got quite a collection of unofficial live MMJ thanks to John.)

Oh, and right now I'm listening to:
      Lyrics Born--"Later that Day"
&     Thomas Hardy-"Mayor of Casterbridge" (book on tape) :)

Oz

The new R.E.M. compilation... Ofcourse I bought it mainly for the second disc, with b-sides and rarities. Some pretty neat stuff on there. A huge must-have for R.E.M.-fans that haven't the money to buy all singles and compilation stuff. Oh, and those new songs "Bad day" and "Animal" are way cool!

QuoteI bought `Lifted or The story is in the soil, keep your ears to the ground´ by Bright Eyes a few days ago. It totally blew my mind. I haven´t been able to listen to it without crying. God, it`s amazing. I have to admit I was feeling really fucked up when I bought, so that helps, but still, it´s extremely heavy. I love it so much. His lyrics are the best I ever heard, his screaming is just sending cold shivers all through my body. I gotta have everything he ever made. I can´t believe it. Goddamn!

finally gave this a listen too. you're right o. great stuff! love the drummin and the harmonies on 'make war' are sooo sweet.

Oz

Hey, I'm glad you do, Riny! Yeah, the drumming is really great as well. The instruments used on that record give it a weird feel. I still love it, but I haven't heard it in a while. Guess I'm gonna change that this week...  :)

Other than lots of artists already mentioned..

The Music
(a outstanding live band)
Bobby Bare Jr. Young Starvation League - playing in Nashvillle next weekend. Great show. They opened for MMJ before and that's how I ran across them.

lfish

Ok all who said Bright Eyes is good, is definitely wrong. This guy is more than good, he's awesome. For the moment I'm listening to the album "Lifted or the story...." and it's a great album.

Also in my cdplayer for the moment, our own belgian talent, namely Admiral Freebee.  Hey O if you don't know this guy yet, check him out, he's also awesome.
lfish

Oz

Yeah, I know Admiral Freebee. I like his recorded stuff, but last summer I saw him live at A Campingflight to Lowland's Paradise and that was rather disapointing... Pretty boring bluesrock, I thought. But maybe he just had an uninspired day, or I should just check out the album.

Oh, and I totally agree with you on Bright Eyes. You should see him live one day. The intensity of that man is unbelievable. He sure has bright eyes...

TONS of postings. Can't read them all. Elbow is mentioned yet?
Asleep in he back....great album, just got the second album, Cast of thousands. Radiostation www.kinkfm.com plays the beautiful track *fugitive motel* now and then.
I read the note about Bright Eyes, I know them for a while, had to quit listening to Soft machine (1968) :-[ and replayed Make war.....nice song indeed...

Pinte

Nice to see people mentioning Lucero. Great band. Three solid albums. I got the free bonus cd when I bought "That Much Further West" in Louisville (EarXTacy).

And again, with people talking about Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea" (def. one of the best records of the 90's) - it ought to be a crime not to go and buy Okkervil River's "Down The River of Golden Dreams".

plank10

That bonus cd is pretty neat. Some stripped down recordings of the new songs in their old stlye and some interesting early/live versions of the rest.

Sal Paradise

Damien Rice - O

O those last three songs! O!
The sound in your mind is the first sound that you could sing

lfish

Thx to cereal killer, I'm diggin' out the gathering again. Waw indeed, their albums are great.  I just rediscovered "how to measure a planet".  Awesome relaxing cd.  I find even a ressemblance with the jacket.  Anneke is also using a lot of reverb for her ethereal singing.
Every jacket fan should give this a try.

Blind Melon

Haven't listened to this in a long time. great stuff. damn i hate that bee girl video

jezebel

okay, i know i'm probably asking for trouble, buuuut....i'm overcome with joy and i'm not sure what to do. i won a $100 gift certificate to the local record store, and i want to break my habits and indulge entirely in new music. i've heard some recs for the postal service and the shins. what albums from the past year do i absolutely *have to* buy??

lfish

marktwain

"Mouthfuls" by Fruitbats - essential!  One of the top two albums of the year (along w/ It Still Moves, of course)

plank10

The Postal Service - Give Up is amazing.

What besides MMJ do you like?
