well, of course there is a certain amount of cool to vinyl.  it looks cool, the album cover itself is cool, the physical medium of vinyl is cool, and you can clean out your stash on a double gate fold.  ;)

tapes, on the other hand, are worthless hunks of plastic with a string of tape inside of them that gets jammed, gummed up, and are usually as useless as 8 tracks after a few years of use.  the sound quality is marginal, the hiss is as annoying as a mouthwash made out of curdled buttermilk, and the cost of them is hilarious as CD's (sometimes) run about the same price as these 1980's nightmares.

now, reel to reel is a whole other ballgame.  ;D

Centro-Matic: Love you just the same (flashes and cables, without you)

Willard Grant Conspiracy: Everything's fine
                          Regard the end

Just a great band, worth seeing live too.

MMJ_fanatic

has anbody on the forum checked out m ward?  I picked up his cds after the first collaboration tour earlier this year.  the duet for guitars one is a little hard to get but they are all quite good.  I know he's got the Jim James stamp of approval :)

Fabulous version of "Lets Dance" on his last album.
He has also done some cool stuff with Howe Gelb on "The band of Blacky Ranchette......Still looking good to me"

yes! let's dance had me cocking my head the first show I saw--I was like MMM I know this song, then of course he sang and all was clear again.  I have to say o'brien/o'brien's nocturne is my ab favorite right now. ;)

Saw M.Ward opening for Grandaddy a couple of years ago.
He seemed pretty cool then. He has probably made several albums, which one would you recommend?

Have to pick up the new Guided By Voices album.....Half Smiles of the Decomposed.  Make sure to see them on their last tour EVER....flew to NYC and saw them on the Hudson River...Pier 54.  It was awesome.  Adding to that....Ambulance Ltd opened for them.  Pick up their disc....very good.

In order of preference:

1) end of amnesia

2) transfiguration of vincent

3) duet for guitars #2 (hard one--typically only available as an import)

Right now I'm playing at lot of Sun Kil Moon, and bought three great cd's by Okkervil River, Bellwether and Neutral Milk Hotel. Recommended!!

Isaac Brock's Ugly Casanova is great as well.

And I'm looking forward to hearing Phil Elvrum's Mt. Eerie project/band.

MMJ_fanatic

so, what is the sun kil moon song Glen Tipton about anyway--I don't have any of their stuff but I am curious about their motivation/purpose for writing about the JP guitarist

Can't tell you the exact lyrics but it is about fans picking their preference of liking either Glenn Tipton or K.K. Downing as the better guitar palyer.  There is also a different reference to Casius Clay and Sonny Liston exchanging blows.

One more thing.....Judas just a put out a box set of four discs called Metalogy and their is an added bonus "classic" dvd.  Check it out if you can.  K.K. and Glenn play in unison all the time swaying back and forth.  And you may not know, they are back with the orginal memebers meaining ROb Halford is back in the band.  Worth going to a show.

Anyone ever hear of Wayne Robbins and the Hellsayers? I apologize if it has already been mentioned but they are kicking my ass right now!

There are a few mp3s to listen to on their site.
Check'em out! I also think Jim James said he dug them!
