I think it's hilarious that you would reference Mitch Hedburg and Steven Wright, since they are two of the "weirder" comic that America has to offer.  I love both of them, but I'm just saying...

Really, they're considered weird? I wouldn't have guessed. Steven Wright makes me laugh out loud.

do you get endless reruns of seinfeld and the simpsons there?  Or do you like movies like "The Big Lebowski" or any Mel Brooks' films? I'm just wondering, this is all so fasinating to me.

Yeah, we get lots of reruns: Friends, Will & Grace etc. They're very popular. The Simpsons are class! I've never seen the Big Lebowski but Mel Brooks films are really funny. Anchorman is popular too. I've just started watching Scrubs. That has some surreal elements. I like it a lot.
I know it's not a comedy per se, but I love Six Feet Under. Very powerful.

Actually, I don't know much about American comedy, only what gets to here on TV. Reruns of Cheers, Seinfeld (I don't get that one), Frasier, The Simpsons (which I love).

I love The Big Lebowski.

And, I'll admit to laugh out loud with the first Ace Ventura and The Naked Gun movies.

I love steven wright, too. I saw him at the Palace one time.  He puts on a great show, even played a few songs on the guitar.  Here's some favorite Steven Wright one-liners:

i saw mitch hedberg only a few months before he died. he was in really bad shape on stage, but it was still one of the funniest shows i've ever seen.

and i am addicted to six feet under. it's a problem.

MMM, yes he is. It's an awful impression, and he's always mildly depressed, which makes it funny. Probably much funnier if you've seen the show.

Kids in Japan always give the peace sign when posing for photos, I think I prefer the bullhorns.

 I've noticed that ALL Japanese women made the peace sign in their pictures.  Every single one of them.  Is that required by law?  They even do it here when they're visiting.  They just randomly walk up and down the streets, suddenly stopping to pose and make a peace sign at people.

I'm told that it was originally done in response to the war & Hiromshima & therefore actually did once mean peace. Now, like you say, it's just an embarrassing bad habit-photo-thing. Kind of infectious too! I'm affraid to say I have posed for more than my fair share of photo's with my students giving the peace sign.
