Id like one of those History From Below's as my entree, but can I get some Ode To Sunshine for an appetizer??
Did anyone see them on Carson Daly. I dvr'd it and wow it was sick! If the Parade vid's intro where dude is waving his crutches in the air isn't rock n' roll, I don't know what is. ;D

DeltaSpirit - Parade Live on Last Call with Carson Daly (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfB5dL1vgek#ws)
I did and didnt catch it...I forgot that Carson does those pre-taped songs from live shows, and didnt plan on there being 2 songs, so I tuned in about halfway thru Bushwick and caught all of Parade...Both were great, and Im kind of glad I caught this after I saw them live because being so caught off guard by how much they rock live was part of why that show was one of thes best Ive ever seen.
Friggin awesome rock n roll music

Yes this was an amazing way to close out the series! The soundtrack team for FNL did an awesome job! They must be big Delta Spirit fans because I remember they also play "Trash Can" when Tammy and Julie go on some college visits in Season 4. Side note, the National's "Start a War" during Buddy Jr.'s tryout this season was most excellent...
Also, I am not sure if this has been mentioned, but Bo Koster was a co-producer on their their most recent album, so I am sure you St. Louis and KC peeps will get to see Bo play some during the opener!

I had to check their tour with that mention, oh shit, had no idea they were opening for the Jacket. Props to them and for MMJ bringing them aboard.
Cool that FNL ended their series like that, Ive heard its good, but is it really as good as like the best shows from HBO, AMC, SHO, etc?

Capt. Scotty, my review will not do the show any justice, but I highly recommend FNL. Kyle Chandler (Super 8 ) does an outstanding job as head coach Eric Taylor, and there are several other dynamic characters (Tim Riggins) that make the show a lot of fun to watch and cheer for. Also, as mentioned above, the soundtrack is excellent. Wilco, Avett Bros., Dan Auerbach, The National, Delta Spirit and many other favorites on this forum make the cut! Check out season one to get ready for this year's football season!
And remember...
Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, CAN'T LOSE!
If you guys are digging Delta Spirit, check out their daytrotter sessions, they've done 2 or 3. They even cover a Dawes song (Peace in the Valley) in one of them.
Kind of bummed I'm not going to the Newport Folk fest this year... had a great time last year (Jim, Prine, Dawes), and this year Delta Spirit and Middle Bro are playing.

they have 2 EPs - I Think I've found it which is the old one (06?) and Waits Room which came out recently. That one has a slow version of Bushwick Blues and John Henry, which is a song they played at most shows last tour.

If you can find it (I think it is on the NPR website) try to get their set from Newport this year. A few new songs, and really energetic performance.

I really liked the new one they played, forgot the name of it though.
yes, that new song is really good (thanks Yagtf I do have the newport set). they played it there too and both times have dedicated to anyone who's ever done construction or drywall.
Strange Vine is a great song. I had underappreciated it until the first time I saw them live- everyone around me knew that song better than me and I understood why. Now I love it.
guys, you have a 1 hr time slot- you are killing it and making lots of new fans....

Id have to say my favorite is Children, followed closely by Bleeding Bells and Parade.
In the same vein as what g33ta was saying, none of them were my favorites until I had the album for a couple years.
Just finished watching a replay of their acl fest set on youtube. Awesome. Brought back memories of st. louis mmj show. They played a song of the new album. It was sweet. Matt said the album would be out around sxsw time.
Nathaniel Rateliff - In Memory of Loss
The Frames - Dance the Devil
Delta Spirit - History from Below
The Walkmen - Lisbon
Lucero - That Much Further West
Lanterns on the Lake - Gracious Tide, Take Me Home
I don't know why you just listed those records, but I love That Much Further West.

Little conflicted about yourself? GOOD BH! BAD BH!
The re-release of this EP for free digital made me pop in the vinyl tonight. Now I've never been the biggest Bushwick (song) fan compared to many of the tracks on History because I felt like it was too straightforward. Don't get me wrong. The song KILLS live! I just think the stripped down (I just wrote this on my acoustic) version that was played on NPR and on the EP illuminates the subtlety that makes it such a more beautiful song.
The generosity of Delta Spirit continues - another free EP - this time "I think I've found it", their very first album. Well worth a download for Gimme Some Motivation, still played at live shows, and early versions of Streetwalker and People Turn Around!

Just saw their FB page that another song from the new album will be on Vampire Diaries tonight. "Money Saves" is the name of the tune. I hope it's better than "California".
Read this album is drum machines and samples...not liking the new song. Hope the rest is better.
Just heard California and am sad panda. I'll still likely be in for the DC show, though. Sounds like I might see a few others of you there.
hearing the new song. it's NOT DS, and matts haircut is stupid, but I don't hate it.
its catchy.
Leaked.
Way to over produced.....they should of stuck with bo....some of the songs are lol bad
This album is super, over-the-top produced.
It really fits some of the songs, but it really seems to diminish a few others (Sorry I haven't learned the names yet). The drums sound like shit on nearly every track. Through the entire album I had to try to think of how it might sound in a live atmosphere, especially since it seems like I probably won't be playing this album much in the future.
So this is making me nervous that the show I'm going to in a month is going to suck

I'm holding out that the live show will still be good. But, I too have heard from people who have the album that it is not good at all. "Pulled a kings of leon" was how someone described it to me.
aw man...i'm getting bummed reading this thread--i was so pumped for this--hopefully it won't be TOO over produced..

;D I was waiting for you to chime in. Pretty much the response I expected.
I had a bad feeling when a DJ on the XM Spectrum describe the sound the band (based on new album and single) as a cross between Coldplay and the Go Gos.
This is totally bumming me out. I'm going to listen with an open mind but I'm not getting a good vibe. How can they go from making the best album of 2010 (?) to being awful.
However, I don't care how bad this album is, you have to do A LOT worse than make one bad album to go KOLing.

Yeah, like doing Kids Bop, worrying more about starting a clothing line than your music, getting shit on by 1 righteous pigeon, trying to pick a fight with Paul Weller, thinking of yourself as a brand instead of a rock band, forgetting all of your true fans who sweated to death in little shithole smoked out clubs in Sauget, IL to become pompous dicks who now only cater to the cougars and their 14 year old daughters, etc etc etc. Yeah 1 bad album is bumming but not KOL worthy

That's the thing. I'm sure a number of the songs will translate well live but so much of the lyrics are so dumbed down and it is pure crap pop now. I mean, this album really sucks in my book. But hey, that's just me. I'm done. I had to pop it out before I finished the last song. The only reason I didn't chuck the CD out my car is because I care about the environment and the cleanliness of baltimore streets. Besides, a burned Delta Spirit CD might have looked mighty suspicious amongst the broken glass and lake trout containers

today is the band's BK pub crawl. i still haven't listened to anything off this album (and this thread certainly doesn't have me rushing to do so) but i might hit up one of the stops.
Man, the news of how awful this new album is really sucks. I was debating on seeing them in Cleveland, but it doesn't seem likely now with all of these terrible reviews I'm hearing about the new album.
I really hope they aren't heading down the path of KOL... :-\
so i went by for the d.b.a. (http://www.drinkgoodstuff.com/) portion of the pub crawl. it ended up being crazy crowded (hello, williamsburg) and if they were playing the music, i couldn't hear it. one funny nugget ... the band's people asked if they could bribe our table away from us for the band. i said no ;D

New album is streaming on Rolling Stone. Will have to listen to this later.
I listened to most of the record on the live stream, and while I still think California is horrible, I liked the record more than I was expecting to. It's amazing what very lowered expectations can do.

I had the exact same thoughts. There were definitely a few stinkers on there, but there are a few songs I skip on all of their albums. I don't think this one will end up being my favorite by any means, but not as bad as I thought it would be.

You two are kind, tolerant souls. Maybe I'll try to pick it up off my car floor and pop it in again. Oh, I'm sure I'll be back here ranting again. When I sing California to myself, I will always think of Mr. Whippy
With all the negative reviews from forum members, statements like this (and there are plenty more like this) concern me (not really):
"Delta Spirit's third album finds the band moving away from the roots-rock sound of their earlier records and embracing a broader sonic palette similar to that of My Morning Jacket, Radiohead and Wilco."
D'oh!

Believe me, I am still very disappointed. They were emerging as one of my favorite bands, and this album will stop that ascent in a hurry. I was just expecting to be ready to vomit with each song I heard after initial reviews, and it wasn't THAT bad for me. It's also something I could see my wife liking, so that helps me to be more tolerant.
JohnnYYac, it's funny you mention MMJ, Wilco and Radiohead. My anticipation of this album and the big letdown I feel after hearing it reminds me of my first listens with Evil Urges, Wilco (The Album) and King Of Limbs.

I just got and listened to the album today. I agree with both of these statements. Some songs are really good. It's catchy. Otherside is a skipper for me...... sounds like ABBA.
I saw them for the first (and only) time last year and my very first thought was "MMJ Lite". I will give this a listen. Hope it's not as awful as all of you say it is! They're back at High Sierra again this year and I was looking forward to giving them another chance live.
I saw them this past Tuesday and it was really great. I'm convinced now that the songs on the new album are very good and the production just ruins a few of them. Although after seeing the songs live, the album sounded even better yesterday.
At one point in the night, Matt asked if anyone saw them the last time they were in St. Louis when they opened for My Morning Jacket. He talked about how great MMJ were, and how when they open for most bands, usually the headliner wants the opener to be at a lower volume, and not over do it, wink wink. But then he said about MMJ: "Those guys were encouraging us to go for it and just let it rip!"
Doesn't that sum up a lot about why we love this band? I felt like a proud father. ;D
Anyway, don't let your opinion of the new ablum keep you from going to see them. They kill it live. The drums, ooh the drums.....
BH - thanks for the report. That's been my hope (about the new album) and hearing you say that is good news. I hadn't given up on them yet until I see the new songs live. The show I saw in 2010 was one of the best shows of the year and I just couldn't imagine they'd take such a severe turn since.

i too was at last night's show. i'm one of those folks that have yet to listen to the new album ;D the reviews weren't exactly inspiring me to lend an ear (and i also suffer from what i call "so much music, so little time"). show was good though and i was surprised by the lead singer's presence and energy. i left early though as i just got sorta irritated at the crowd and had gotten my fill.

Even though I don't like the new album, I was hoping to be inspired and wasn't really blown away. Loved their set at Newport last summer, but this time...eh...I don't like all the encouraging the audience to clap--what is THAT? Every song? Sorry--I'm just turned off by the new KOL/muddy U2 sound they have going on. Loved Devil knows your dead and Bushwick Blues but played too many new songs...
Energy level--yes, that I appreciated.

Yes sir!! I must note that the opener sucks, so do don't worry about staying for an extra beverage somewhere before you catch Delta
Good show! Me and j_rud spotted Eric Slick and his ladyfriend coming into the venue. Super nice dude. He told us the entire band was really sick the night we saw them in Baltimore.
As for DS, lots of hand clapping, lots of new material, but it really was all good. The new material is more than tolerable live. I'd even say I really enjoyed a few of the songs I hate on the album. Lots of energy all around, and Matt must burn 2k calories every night between singing his heart out and clapping and general running around. They closed with Trashcan, and towards the end of the song the keyboard died so he just got up and started singing... grabbed the light can from the edge of the stage and shining it on himself and the crowd while belting out the remainder of the song. Pretty cool.
i cant get into Delta Spirit. good guys and all according to YY. good music but the lyrics ive heard come across as what a woman would call "needy" or "whiney"
the music videos ive watched seem like they try too hard, dunno, cant put my finger on it, had to post an opinion somewhere..
edit: never seen them live
New album is a major disappointment. They became one of my 5 favorite active bands with just 2 albums, seemed like they could do no wrong, and this is album is a big whiff. They seemingly have lost nearly everything that made their music heartfelt, poignant, real and gripping.
Empty House - I feel like I should like this but does nothing for me
Tear It Up - laughably bad
California - although it caught my off guard at first and is definitely a homeless
person's Bushwick Blues, its grown on me and I like it. Has their
signature driving rhythm section.
Idaho - poop
Home - first song to show remnants of DS prior sound. pretty good.
Otherside - heard this on the radio after I had listened to the album and didnt
even recognize/remember it as a DS song because it sounds nothing like
them, complete with cheesy lyrics
Tellin The Mind - whose bright idea was it to add the soundbyte of a gorilla raping a
parrot? total garbage song
Time Bomb/Into The Darkness/Money Saves/Yamaha - I thought the album picked
up with this closing stretch, but I may have been so traumatized by the
previous 25 minutes I am giving these songs too much credit
For a band that had yet to write a song I didnt like a lot, what a turd of an album. I listened to it 3-4 times when it was streaming the week of release and havent had any interest trying to acquire it to give it more listens. Certainly not paying for it.
'Gorilla raping a parrot' Nice!

I'm so glad I didn't preorder the vinyl package. I've only listened to the album twice. That was enough. Empty House is ok but the sound just wasn't for me. Saw them in DC a few weeks back and thought it was an entertaining show but that's it and not remotely close to the History tour show at Ottobar. 5x the people and less old songs was not a good formula. Crowd was into it and they played more old songs than new. Regardless, a ridiculously short show as doors were at 10 and the horrific opener "Waters" got an hour. The old stuff all sounded great and I enjoyed it. I think my biggest problem is that I just don't like Vasquez. He annoys the crap out of me. If he would just stop talking and clapping and just rocked more, I'd be one happy camper.
Bitching aside, I came away satisfied with the show but I doubt I'll ever pay to see them again unless their next album blows me away.

We had a blast last night in Houston. Empty House -> WHITE TABLE ->Tear it Up -> Strange Vine -> PARADE was most excellent. Even the tracks that are so-so on the album (Tellin' the Mind, Idaho) were really good live. I have always skipped over Idaho on the RS stream, but after seeing it live I realized the ending of the song is pretty cool. I also thought the lights were simple and awesome. Just the three "Delta" symbols behind them that were lit with white bulbs and no colors. Similar to MMJ, I love how these guys can bring so much energy and then play some beautiful slow ones. "Yamaha" really caught me by surprise and was probably my favorite song of the night. I am also a huge FNL fan so "Devil Knows Your Dead" was fun to see live. Anyway, I am not the greatest reviewer but even if you are down on the new album, do not miss these guys!

jeez - if I'd gotten that setlist I'd have been furious. As it was I thought the boston show was too short but we had 3 more songs than you. Children and Strange Vine are two of the old songs I really wanted to hear, and got those, as well as Time Bomb from the new album which is ehh. But man, you got shafted.

Bitching aside, I came away satisfied with the show but I doubt I'll ever pay to see them again unless their next album blows me away.
Empty House
White Table
Tear It Up
Idaho
Tellin' the Mind
House Built for Two
Bushwick Blues
People C'mon
St. Francis
California
Encore:
Devil Knows Your Dead
Money Saves
Trashcan
Damn, thats a short show..I think when I saw them like 14months or so ago it was around 20 songs and obviously all from HFB and Ode, plus John Henry and Gimme Some Motivation. I posted it but it looks like it must have been on the old forum.
They didnt come to the Burgh this tour, looking at the setlist cant say Im too sad and that show I did see from them is like Top 5-10 all time for me.

I'm not positive of that setlist. I could have sworn we got at the least Strange Vine as well.
Watching the DC show with a cold and from the balcony wasn't ideal, but I still had fun. Rob.... thought you were there but didn't walk around the venue much. Ditto on some of your sentiments: Vasquez kept trying to fire the crowd up...... All this while saying the D.C. crowd was the best. St. Francis was great and the highlight of the night. And yes unfortunately they perfectly reproduced the sound of the parrot getting raped in the live setting. Don't think I'll rush out to see them again. I enjoyed their opening slot for MMJ in Boca a lot though Vasquez continually tried to rally the crowd that night as well.

Missed ya again! I was bummed I couldn't make New Multitudes. We were towards the stage on the right side, right by the bar. Does that setlist look right to you Adam? Agreed about St. Francis.

I remember hearing Children and Yamaha (the last song from the new album), but I'm not sure the order. www.setlist.fm (http://www.setlist.fm) agrees with you though. Wasn't children right before California? Am I out of it or something? They must have played over 13 songs.
I knew you were out for New Mult since you weren't on the roll call, but I was a bit surprised about that. See you at another area show..... Radiohead, Brad, Sollee solo?
I know many think Delta Spirit has jumped the shark. I continue to defend them and will see them again later this month. But jeez- they are turning Children (my fav song) into a sappy synth drone.... that will lose me for good for sure....

Anyone going tomorrow night in Boston? Not crazy about the latest record, but this will be the 6th time I've seen them and they've always delivered

I will be there! along w/ my wife and friend Zach... and pretty much agree w/ your review. New album ehh- but still enjoy their live show and hope that they play a bit more of a mixed-up setlist than April. I assume you were at the last 3 paradise shows?
And a Newport show, a free show on Landsdowne & show downstairs at the Middle East. That first show Dawes opened for them,we bought the first Dawes cd from Griffin Goldsmith on the streets of Cambridge outside the club and that led us to many more Dawes shows. Where does it end ?
I'm happy to report that I found last night's show WAY more enjoyable than April's dud. I was worried I was on the downward slope with them but had a blast and thought they were great, both performance and set-list choice.

I wonder if they realized their sudden change of sound and lack of soul didnt sit well with fans and didnt make them any more popular

I saw them in July and they were amazing. Maybe they had realized it by then! Or maybe it had to do with the fact that Ian O'Neill from Deer Tick was hanging out where I was and it tainted my view of the show? Nah, I think it was a kick ass show. Bump in the road. I think they're back on track!

They got a new album out. So far I'm not so sure I like it.
I ended up with an extra vinyl copy of Delta Spirit's latest LP, Into the Wide. Its sealed, 180g clear vinyl, and comes with a download card.
It sells for $22.50 on Amazon
I'll sell it for $20 w/free shipping.
I've got it posted on eBay with no takers, so I'm posting here before I drop the price there. Let me know via PM or email (johnnyyac@gmail.com) if interested.

Have you guys checked out Matt's solo EP that just came out? It's all solid but this song in particular is pretty great: https://youtu.be/46nGB1-oMj8
