Mutha lovin funky jazzzzzzzzzz
YEah I dig that a lot. Intro at their shows this summer???
Haven't heard yet, is this an instrumental? Saw a Zappa comparison in the other thread...
All instrumental, some sax, nice guitar solo, reminds me of a part of cobra/easy morning rebel
This reminds me of the outtakes from the Blues for Allah Grateful Dead album...golly I hope this turns up live!

Honestly, this track got me more excited for the future of MMJ than Circuital. Wow. I've never heard this sound from the boys (or really anyone for that matter). Sort of a synthesis of Blues For Allah Dead and funk from an alternate universe. Can't wait for more of these incredible jams from Self Hypnosis...
OK WOW! Stuck at school all day waitning to get home and place my pre order and Roll Call order. This song makes me think that the universe is MMJ's oyster and they can do whatever the hell they want and it will be beyond amazing. Not that I didn't think on that level already but...
Despite this being the only thing (with the exception of some spaced out Dondante jams) in the Jacket catalog of its kind, would it be too much to say this is my new favorite MMJ jam??
I mean it's all instrumental so that kinda gives it an advantage, but the vibe on this thing is makin' me float! This is my grooooooooove :bath:
Dear MMJ, please give us an octoplasmic experience live....pretty pretty please.

Yeah it looks like we may get some additional intrumental album which would be so awesome.
Wow love this! I really hope they decided to release a few more instrumentals!

Not unless someone gives it to you, and I have a feeling everyone here will tell you to just join the fan club (which you should do anyway).
I'm not here asking for it, I was just curious.
And I would join the fan club, but I'm a bit strapped for cash haha.

Very Grateful Dead. Nice sidetrack track, but clearly not any direction I would like to see take any kind of hold for them. I much prefer Jim's vocals and melodies.

"My Morning Jacket would like to welcome all those who join the new MMJ Roll Call fan club into their much talked about and highly controversial "Self-Hypnosis Series" as well. It can sense listeners temperature and emotional climate at the time of listening-thru any listening device, be it speakers or headphones, and cater a listening experience truly unique for each listener. MMJ will carefully handcraft and carve pieces of music that will provide a vehicle for the listener to enter a new gateway of self exploration and understanding based on their current state of mind at the time of each listen. The Self-Hypnosis Series will start with a piece entitled "Octoplasm" which will be available via download immediately upon joining Roll Call. pretty hilarious.
Octoplasm sounds like a funky improv to me. it's alright, circuital, however is pretty fantastic. bo's key melody that kicks it and the way the acoustic is mixed is two of my favorite parts of it. I hope Octoplasm opens up the door for them to jam a little more at shows. spontaneity is a good thing.

I agree it does sound like the grateful dead. specifically jerry garcia's guitar tone. It sounds like my morning jacket paying tribute to the grateful dead sort of in the tone sense. overall I still think it's just sort of an improv jam with some loops and overdubs no matter who it sounds like. it's kinda boring, would be more fun live.

you hit the nail on the head br00ke. it's like an homage to the dead type of jam mixed with what I'd consider a classic funk style riff. Funkadelic meets Grateful Dead meets the obvious vibrato of MMJ. the jerry tone is used for the soloing like just before the one minute mark or right around the 3minute mark and eventually towards the end sprinkled in. to be honest I'm the most impressed with Tom on this track. his bass line is straight bad ass for the majority of the song. and then it turns angelic and he shines even more. I don't think the main riff guitar reminds me of the dead I think only the lead does. the riff is where I'm getting the funkadelic vibe from probably.
bottom line, if this makes them improv more live I'm all for it.

As am I, sticky. They're more than capable of upping the amount of improvisation in their shows IMO, and one would think it'd be refreshing for them to do so with so many shows in heavy tour years.
I would really love to see some form of this enter the live repertoire, even if it ends up being brief moments of awesomeness like what they did with the Good Intentions>Lay Low Jam or Eminence Front Intro. I'm respectfully surprised that some peeps wouldn't want live improvisation or Octoplasmic jamming in a show!

By the way the description given for this self-hypnosis thingy kinda sorta reminds me of Pete Townshend's Lifehouse Method which, like many Pete projects, never really came to fruition:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lifehouse_Method (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lifehouse_Method)
"The Lifehouse Method was an Internet site where applicants could sit for an electronic musical portrait made up from data they enter into the website. This website was the result of a collaboration between The Who's principal songwriter and composer Pete Townshend, composer Lawrence Ball and software developer Dave Snowdon."
"Townshend hoped to link the audience in a way that would reflect the personalities of the audience members. To do this, he adapted VCS3 and ARP synthesizers and a quadraphonic PA to create a machine capable of generating and combining personal music themes written from computerized biographical data. He expected these thematic components would merge to form a "One Note" or "universal chord" representing the audience, and by extrapolation, all of humanity."
Love the track, probably more appropriate for this "hypnosis series" deal than the album, but if they need to create their own psychotherapy songs outside of albums and theyre gonna sound like this, Im all for it.
The guitar is definitely JG reminiscent, and maybe this is the Phish phan in me, but what gives it even more of a Dead vibe IMO is because the song is entirely rhythm section driven, and the guitar complements the drums and bass for basically the whole song.
From first listen, this feels like the song that replaces the 2nd half of Run Thru from last tour, or ends up being a late set staple regardless...I dont see how they pass up playing this live, so many segue options as well
I hear a full-on Jerry Garcia vibe to the guitar, but not really a Grateful Dead sound. Anyone else here familiar with Jerry & Howard Wale's work together (Hooteroll)? Very similar sound to Octoplasm....

The first song I ever heard and saw MMJ play was A Quick One on the Bonnaroo Web cast in 2006, when I was tuning in for Tom Petty. Then I was blown away by the rest of their set featuring their own songs. Loved MMJ ever since. Fortuitous timing I would say.
Really enjoy this track. For me, it accomplishes exactly what it is advertised to do -- self-hypnotize. Kinda brilliant, really. All four times I've sat down to listen to this, I just get lost in that groove and actually do just start thinking about random shit. Can't wait for installment number two.
Dont' mean to be negative, but I am doubting that we will hear this live. Sounds like it was just a jam that happened to be recorded. As amazing a band as they are, I doubt they could (or would want to) duplicate what happened in the confines of a free-form jam session.
in just the first few seconds I found a strong resemblance in the sound patterns that instantly reminded me of the Hamza Al Din jam from the 9-16-78 in Egypt (maybe its just me), always loved that jam, and I also love this. Check out this footage, starting a 1:46 or so.

Things that may have happened:
- You downloaded it into a "downloads folder" and since moved/deleted the copy from that folder
- You got the twofer package that had Circuital and Octoplasm in a .zip file and opened it from the zip file without realizing it never copied to your iTunes music folder
- If you're using an external drive for your music, it never copied
My advice is to open your iTunes prefs, make sure that you have "keep iTunes music folder organized" and "copy files to iTunes folder" both checked, then re-import.
I have had just about every problem possible with iTunes. It deleted an entire Sam Cooke collection on me while keeping the library contents, and every time I expand my hard drive to handle more music, it seems to lose more artists. They're artists I rarely listen to, but I'd still like to have for nostalgia reasons.
