Circuital leaked. I won`t be surprised if this thread gets deleted but I figure we could discuss leaked albums and the ethical or moral questions that surround leaked albums and dowloading them.
Robin from Fleet Foxes told people to download the leak (of Helplessness Blues) because in his opinion without music sharing there wouldn`t be all the sweet new music there is now because it used to be harder to expand your musical horizons before internet file sharing. I agree with that but it pisses me off when people download a leaked verssion and then don`t support the band when the full version comes out.
What does everybody else think...
I've got the deluxe vinyl edition comin' my way, so I'll just say that the new record is pretty awesome and I can't wait to hear the band rock the hell out of some of these songs at Bonnaroo next month!
"And Here We Go" - Joker (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSLlZh9yelk#ws)
I got the deluxe edition as well but...
Are you saying I opened a can of worms?
it seems like most people that would actually take to time to track down a leak have probably already preordered that album.
I guess I don't really see the big deal if you still buy that album later on.
yes you did
yep
chode burned us all a copy back in March. It pretty much sux

Let's just keep it cival, to each his own.
Well shit, I didn't get a copy in March. Maybe this thread should be deleted.

Why would members leave over that question?
When EU was leaked and people started talking about it/reviewing it/arguing over the morals of leak/etc etc it got ugly and people left.
I must have missed that.
Does anybody have the full version of "You Wanna Freak Out"? Mine is only 1:41 and the end is cut off. Other than that sounding good. And I have spent over 200$ on MMJ is the last month on Circuital pre-sale and tickets so I don't feel bad.

@Jacketman42 @jacketcountdown The actual cd sleeve will NOT be filled with grape jelly. That's just the prototype. Sorry about the mess.
From @sometomeguy
@Jacketman42 @jacketcountdown Vinyl comes preloaded with Goober. PB & grape jelly!
See, there IS still something to look forward to!
Grape jelly would be hella disappointing. Glad to see that straightened out. ;D
Took a gander at the track times, but no leak listening for me until the NPR stream is up. According to some websites YWFO is cut off, but of course I wouldn't know any better.
That said, lets not let this cloud the album release for all of us. If you're listening and you've got an insanely negative reaction about a certain song, don't broadcast it and make a huge deal, at least until the album is out. That killed us last time, no need for it to happen again.
The real question... how blurred will irony and reality become in this thread? :o
I had to register just to say that THIS ALBUM IS AMAZING. I have been listening to MMJ since It Still Moves, and I can't describe how much I love this album after just a few listens. I won't spoil anything, I just needed to tell someone how awesome this album is.

I speak of an album we know in our collective higher form of consciousness as "Chodeital"
the first tracks seems like it beats 4 u ,wordless chorus and gideon put together. :)

I'm up to Wonderful. Awesome so far.
it was going to happen eventually. the ones that want to hear it will hear it. the ones that don't will hold off until the 31st.
we'll get our initial thoughts out of the way. maybe argue about it. in a few weeks when we receive the packages, of whatever we ordered, we'll all freak/nerd out again.
bottom line is that we are hearing the album!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
don't know if this is a negative comment but this album so far seems very two halves to me.

ok after first listen thru the album I like the first track and the last best of the new tracks (excluding cir and holdin) the others don't seem rocking to me. this album i also feel holds back pats drumming skills.
hmmm....... i didn't like eu at first listen to I'll end up loving this album. I think the thing is is that this album has a new charm.
edit: i would like to thank bowers and wilkins for making great fucking headphones.
Don't worry guys, that copy I burned you in March had the bonus tracks on it, including Wonderful and the 8 bit version of Black Metal.
You're still superior.
i noticed that in the album version of "Holdin on" that the line "teenage pop" doesn't sound like the "poP-uh" that is on the single version. i don't know which version i should hold on to..
A bunch of Lies.
You could not possibly enjoy this album or get anything out of it until May 31'st when your deluxe LP package arrives. Unless of course you decide to listen to the NPR stream when that happens...........or you listened to the 15 second clip on amazon.com of black metal and then downloaded the full version from itunes.com....or you happened across the mp3 of the song circuital from mmj.com........BUT BY NO MEANS should this entire album be spoken of or enjoyed until the mighty May 31'st!!!!! You heathens might have listened to the album but you certainly have not HEARD it!!!! On May 31'st the gods will sound their golden trumpets for the true followers of the band. At this time if your deluxe LP has not arrived you will have the option to download your pre-paid files. These files have been certified by the band and kissed by god himself. Then and only then can your heart, your ears, your mind and your soul truly connect with CIRCUITAL! Have fun never truly enjoying this record you leak listeners. You'll find me at the midnight sale on May 30th outside of Cats I'll be picking up the new Pearl Jam record Vs. as well.
Cat's records is still open right?
Here's my take on leaks vs not leaks:
Leak it if you want it. Go ahead. Nature calls.
HOWEVER, when a band goes through the effort to keep the dying artform of the "Album" alive, I'm going to go with the flow of that. Yes, half of that is marketing. But if the other half is the anticipation and raging boner that comes along with it, then I'm gonna let the band blue ball me. There's nothing inherently special about May 31st. But there is something special about non-instant gratification.
In this instance, I plan on doing a whole unboxing ritual in my Pica-skin (look it up) underoos. In fact, I might even go back to my parents house and dig out my black light and lava lamp for this.

From what dillsnufus said, its seems a little softer though.
definitely isn't punchy rock blaring guitars. tho victory dance has little bit. and live who knows
real bummer to hear that it's slower, softer, not punch guitars, etc...
I'll wait until 5/31 but my real hope was that they boys pick up the pace... :(
soft..and slow would be my description so far...not other way to really describe it...not nearly enough guitar for me.
i actually really like the whole thing which surprises me .. i usually require a warm up / adjustment period but i really really like it love it. i can see alot of these songs are gonna rage when played live .. and also it'll be great to see how these songs will grow, mature, and come into their own after being on the road. i think & hope alot of you will be surprised how much you grow to love this album. also, i see alot of room for things to get loud & weird which i always love

also .. listneing to moving away, whew !!! it takes me back to sitting right in front of JJ for the VH1 storytellers. i can close my eyes and feel it .. see it. great tune, the last two tracks are like a breeze you've been waiting for all damn day.
I am so ready for this album it's rediculous...I have decided to wait til I get the package on my doorstep and drop the needle to listen to it, even gonna try and avoid the NPR stream (i say that now). Aside from the 3 songs I have heard off of it, which are all vastly different, I cannot see a common thread through anyone's premature evaluations. That is pretty interesting/exciting.
some stray observations:
- TTF, At Dawn, ISM had like 5-6 slower songs so I'm not surprised that the album has slower paced tracks. Esp. with the laidback despcriptions of the album making process.
- I've totally let go of any preconceptions of this band; they have proved that they are gonna go different each time out, I am not thinking of the other albums when approaching this one, Circuital will obviously have its own identity which is really exciting.
- I'm saddened that after 3 years we can't all just agree that EU was a solid record. I love it. Maybe not more than the others but it certainly has its place and I believe its a really strong effort.

I'm not sure how I feel about this leaking and the opportunity to listen. Yes, I did purchase the deluxe set already so I know that at least I don't have to feel morally conflicted over it if I want to listen, but doing so knowing what the boys have done for us thus far (T5 realease each week building up to the Circuital single, a sneak peak at Black Metal, naming Roll Call after us--this has to be it) makes me feel really awkward about the whole thing. What to do what to do.

Thanks ladies.....I have to say of all my trying to get people I know into MMJ, Evil Urges was the best and easiest selling point. I think it appealed to people more who didn't come to expect anything from the band and that it was varied, spacerockin, and somewhat accessible musically. However, I know it sounds good in my ears and that's what counts.
My bet is that this is the album where Carl's stylings punch through, which explains some of the descriptions here. Going on Circuital alone, he's sort of got this Knopfler-meets-Neil Young feel.

This is a good post...but I have to say about the last part. It is not sad when eveyone does not agree with you. It is just opinion. This is a forum and the reason for it is to discuss music..good or bad. Not everyone is going to love everything this band does. I love MMJ but I didn't think EU was a good album. I understand they were trying to do something different and I respect that but I don't think it worked. Just my opinion...I'm sure others have different ones but I'm not sad when they do.

That's fine, I was speaking more to the initial EU reaction which to me was a little harsh. I figured that with a 3 yr cooling off period, some opinions may change, but those are just hopes. Maybe you'll warm up to the album through the years Bold, kinda like I did to Modest Mouse who I initially berated and now love.
there's a new MMJ album?

- I've totally let go of any preconceptions of this band; they have proved that they are gonna go different each time out, I am not thinking of the other albums when approaching this one, Circuital will obviously have its own identity which is really exciting.
- I'm saddened that after 3 years we can't all just agree that EU was a solid record. I love it. Maybe not more than the others but it certainly has its place and I believe its a really strong effort.
agreed on both counts
Couldn't agree more! Best post in this thread so far :)
Gotta agree again! Keep this up and soon you can just automatically put "Sara agrees" after your posts

Haha, I'm right there with you brother. The fact that I don't know how to get the leak these days has really made it easy for me to abstain.
I feel like instead of turning this thread into one giant meme we should be discussing how fucking AMAZING Victory Dance is not only as an opener but as a song itself. :D
VICTORY DANCE IS FUCKING NAAASSSSTTTYYY!!!!
Just so we're clear I very much intend to buy the vinyl of this album, so i'm not resting on what we have now.
that being said, I liked the album a lot. It was strange, sometimes albums take a while to grow on me, but this one each song took a minute or two haha. At the beginning of most songs i was skeptical but after a few minutes i was really digging them.
yep, Victory Dance is going to be an incredible opener!
I haven't caved yet...
I'm pretty pumped about Victory Dance after the comments here, but there has been virtually no talk of other tracks on the album I have not heard in any form yet. Well maybe a little about Slow Slow Tune and Movin' Away. I'm wondering what people's opinions are of The Day Is Coming, Outta My System, First Light, and You Wanna Freak Out.
The Day is coming is pretty cool, it's got some Omnichord goodness, and a really cool intro.
Outta My System is pretty cool, too, I haven't really gotten into it as much as the other songs, though.
First Light may be my favorite off the album, it reminds me of early-70's Who. Love it.
I don't think anyone has the full "You Wanna Freak Out", but the first 1:41 makes me want more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Circuital (album) is definitely better than Evil Urges on the whole, but I don't think it reaches the highs that EU did. Circuital is desperately missing a heavy rocker :(
The first 7 songs work really well, good flow. I'm not sure if "freak out" is really only 1:41 long, but that is it's length on the leak. The last two songs are both very slow, probably too much so.
As others have said, Victory Dance is really great and will be a great live opener. Day is Coming is midtempo, friend described as hall and oates meets motown. Probably as good a description as I can come up with. Feels a bit like Touch Me Part 1. Outta My System has goofy lyrics, but they work. Fun song. First Light is probably the closest to a real rocker, sounds like "magical mystery tour"-era Beatles to me.
It's a very good album, but def behind Z and everything earlier for me.

Wow, I would not compare it to Highly Suspicious at all.
not the song at all, not even close...just the 'synth' sounds that are in the beginning of the tune are very similar sounds/effects. Probably shouldn't have even mentioned the 2 songs in the same sentence.

I agree, First Light is a WAY better song :)
Although I would've liked one guitar solo on Circuital that was as dirty and raw as the solos in HS.
Slow, Slow Tune is my early favorite. I think it actually has the potential to be very epic live. The solo is just waiting to explode a little more
Does Victory Dance remind anyone of Strangle Hold?
After listening to the album about 6 times since last night I am drawing preliminary conclusions. I really wanted the first time I heard it to be May 31 or whenever the box set arrived in the mail but whatever!
I love the flow of the album. I really think that we'll start hearing Victory Dance-->Circuital when they start performing more new songs in the set. I would love to hear the rest of You Wanna Freak Out, I like the first 1:41 A LOT!
The album should translate very well live. There may even be room in some songs for exploration/jamming during the live performances. May 31st is going to be a great day that's for damn sure. Can't wait for the webcast!

My take: Slow slow tune is gonna be the epic live song. I agree there aren't really any raging songs, but I think that couldve been done purposefully. There seems to be a lot of room to make some songs ragers live. They've reinvented their sound again and it's awesome. I've only listened 1.5 times so far. The Wonderful recording sounds straight up like BH or Golden

What other songs do you think could be stretched out live?
Victory dance has some room for being jammed live, Circuital is a jam already. First light has some room for a kick ass solo at the end, in place of the horns that are there now.
I'd say besides Circuital, Black Metal, Wonderful - my fav's have to be Victory Dance, First Light and Movin Away but as a whole this album is absolutely solid and a great surprise. This band never ceases to amaze me.
i also think "the day is coming" has a great vocal performance by jim.

An early favorite for me. the song bounces so well
Outta My System sounds a bit too mid tempo MOF for me. Wouldn't be suprised if it's from those writing sessions
It sounds like Evil Urges without the great songs and without the bad songs.

where are yall finding the leak? i want a tiny taste....... ;D
I'm getting over feeling guilty about an early listen. They've already deducted $80 for the deluxe grand slam from my checking account.
Also...
I'm listening to it on headphones right now, in the midst of track 4, Wonderful.
This album is, at its start, masterful.
Track 3 could be a breakthrough hit for MMJ and Jim James in contemporary rock, pop, soul, etc.
Victory Dance is awesome.
The songs flow into each other, a la At Dawn.
I do miss an epic guitar song, another Lay Low, Run Thru, OBH, etc. I think they will build some gigantic guitarsplosions playing most of the tunes live, however.
I love the fuzz, the crackling, the subtle Omnichord (thanks, Jim, keeping my hobby alive).
I'm into track 6- Black Metal! I love this song more each time.
First Light is Dancefloors 2011!
Its not MY perfect My Morning Jacket album, but it is A perfect MMJ album. Does that make sense?
The cut-off in track 8, You Wanna Freak Out, sort of blew my focus, but I can't wait to hear it complete in 4 weeks.
The last 2 tracks are nice mellow tunes, will require further study.
Not what I expected, though I'm not sure what I expected. The more I'm listening, the more I'm liking.
Man, we're so ready for the next Steam Engine or Dondante, an MMJ Terrapin Station. Its not here, though. Maybe Jim's solo album will have something epic.
By the time I clicked on the link it was gone. >:(
Oh well, guess I'll just have to wait.
i found it really, surprisingly, good on first couple listens.

I'm just saying that the lows aren't as low and the highs aren't as high for me... I think (or something).
From what I caved in and listened to:
Victory Dance- AWESOME. I think my favorite so far... it dives back into the weird, dramatic pop of the first 3 songs on Z... can you imagine if they did a whole album that sounded like this? Crazy good.
Circuital- Wonderful song, as we all know. Fits well in the 2nd slot, just a great comfort to listen to.
The Day Is Coming- Cool song with great vocals and nice omni touches, but in the end it doesn't really go anywhere. My least favorite, I suppose, if I had to choose.
Wonderful (The Way I Feel)- Remember how long ago we first heard this? It was way back in 2007 at the Rudyard Kipling show... and it's aged like fine wine, easing gently into the MMJ catalogue. Along with Circuital, the most "old MMJ" so far.
Out of My System- Those slide guitars remind me a little bit of Drive By Truckers... slower and shorter than I was expecting, actually sounds like Smokin with more harmonies. Silly lyrics, but crescendos with the best of 'em. Great stuff.
Holdin on to Black Metal- The hardest rocker that I've heard on the album, sounds a lot wilder in context. I love it to death, personally.
First Light- Unheard!
You Wanna Freak Out- Unheard!
Slow Slow Tune- Sounds like it could have been on the Live at the Palms release; romantic feel of Thank You Too and I Will Sing You Songs. Nice solo!
Movin Away- Unheard!
First impressions are that the genre experiments aren't worn on the sleeve as much; songs like Slow Slow Tune capture the spirit of a genre rather than emulating the sound, which makes it a step up. Lots of midtempo and slower stuff... so far the only song that bucks all of these trends (in an awesome way) is Holdin on to Black Metal.
The first two songs are incredible, maybe the best ever start to a Jacket album. It all flows very, very well. If there's one criticism to be had, it's that while it sounds amazing, it's very restrained. Few guitar solos, Jim's voice (while in peak form here) never lets loose, and Patrick doesn't really have a showcase moment.
All in all, love it so far.
I hope the songs the birds are singing in the background on wonderful get credit in the liner notes. That might be copyright infringement.

I know what you are saying..I think. I didn't really like EU but there were songs I really liked like both Touch Me's...I don't hear anything on this that I like nearly as much...and even EU had some rockers..not great rockers but at least they were there.
I've yet to listen to all of Circuital because I'm trying to score some good weed. I have a tradition of always listening to newly leaked/released albums from my favorite bands while smoking my pipe. I mean come on, MMJ is perfect for cannabis use.
Victory Dance starts like a CSNY tune...I'm loving the vibes on this album...very chill. I'm thinking HOTBM is my favorite, but Wonderful still makes me wonderfied...

You nailed the CSNY-ness of the vocals opeing Victory Dance; I almost don't recognize Jim's voice, wonder if there's more Bo and/or Carl vocally in this.
I realize my initial comments on p. 8 are a bit fawning, but listening to the first 7 tracks uninterupted w/headphones, and dispensing with pre-conceived notions and desires, its a pretty solid effort. It really ties together nicely.
I cringe with my wife's comment about The Day is Coming, "It sounds like Hall and Oates!" She's right, but I still think its a good tune and has potential to be a cross-over hit.
Love it. Victory Dance, Circuital, Wonderful, Black Metal, and Slow Slow Tune are my favorites after a few listens through.

Probably better than anything I've ever heard. Ever. It's like an angel simultaneously signing and orgasming. I can't believe how awesome it is. I want to quit my job, go home and hit the bong until I don't know my name while listening to this album repeatedly in the fetal position until I die of hunger/thirst. I want to crawl inside of a vacuum and just be the music, it's so mind bending. It's like music from another dimension, I want to be it and it be me. I want to drown myself in a pool that's reverberating with the aural delights of circuital and know that we are, in fact, one. I want to pleasure this album. In the butt. While also being pleasure from it...in all my holes. This album is what God listens to when he's creating shit. It is the indefinable point of oneness that connects all of space and time, life and knowledge, it is the center of every black hole, the flame burns at the center of every star. The album is a reflection of God Himself.

That's odd because I'm pretty sure they ripped off this song... especially around the 2:18 mark. ;D
The Chi-lites "Have you seen her" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVYxKRXDT2I#)
1, 3, 9 and 10 are amazing.
not my favorite MMJ album but that is probably because they wear their influences a little too closely on the sleeve.
This band is a musical force and i'd love to see a little more boundry pushing. Or straight up heartfelt/epic tunes

I like the CD a lot. A few songs seem too short though. "Outta My System" to me is begging for a double time rock-out jam starting at around 2:58. Just a drum build and then they take off like the 3:15 mark of Dancefloors.
A few of these songs remind me of other songs...
Victory Dance has a deep south gospel "songs of the freedom" sound. The beginning lyrics seem to follow that theme too. Then it seems to go the Bob Seger "Turn the Page" vocal phrasing mixed with Stranglehold...I heard someone else mention the Nugent part too.
The Day is coming reminds me of The Flaming Lips-One More Robot Sympathy 3000-21 off of Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots.
Moving Away has me stumped but it reminds me of something as well.
Overall I am enjoying this album very much.
