I have never been to this venue. I am trying to decide between Austin and Grand Prairie, since I don't think I can swing both. I mostly see terrible reviews for Austin Music Hall and mostly good reviews for the venue in Grand Prairie. Does anyone have any opinions on this venue?

i was a little bummed to see it was the music hall.  for the larger venues in austin it's my least favorite but if you're closer to the front the sound is good.  i saw mmj last time they played grand prairie and don't remember having thoughts either way about it.  it is a drive out of dallas where the music hall is at least downtown in austin.  and there are 2 shows here.

I'm assuming Austin will be all GA floor and reserved balcony.  GP in 2011 was GA in the front and seats behind that.  All 3!

Yeah I'm not a big fan of the Austin Music Hall as I think the acoustics suck. It's just a big open room with upper level balconies. Either way, two shows in my city.. Sold

We have been jonesing to come to Austin for a multi-night run of any of the bands we follow, like MMJ, Wilco, Black Crowes, etc.  because we always like to mix some rock n roll in with our vacations to cool cities and places. We don't dig festivals and when most of the bands we dig play Austin, its for ACL.  So I got so excited when I heard about 2 nights indoors in Austin, but EVERYONE is talking about the crappy sound in this venue!  What a bummer.  I can see going there if you live there or close by already, but I just don't know if I wanna build a whole trip around seeing a fave band in a crappy venue.  :undecided:  If we do Austin, we can't do three nights in San Francisco.  If you had to fly to get to the shows and had to pick between Austin and SF on this tour, which would you guys who have seen shows at this venue pick?

I guess we'll just have to come to Austin when we can and not wait any more years for it to coincide with some rock shows.

Well two things to consider. First off, San Francisco is way more expensive to stay in for 3-4 nights than Austin is. Austin is pretty cheap compared to large cities for lodging/food/etc (so that's points for Austin).

Second, two shows in Austin vs three shows in San Fran? (points for San Fran). I can't speak to the sound quality of the venue in San Fran, but out of the mid-large venues in Austin, The Austin Music Hall is my least favorite. It's not horrible, but it's acoustics just suck with how they built the place. Now the last band I saw there was Weezer, and they were having technical problems the whole show, so that made me really not want to go back as the sound was so bad I left after 10 songs (tops).

Both cities are awesome, but sound quality is important to me, so I think I'm gonna have to go to SF.

Thanks for the info, helpful in my decision!  One day we will come to Austin just to hang out, eat and see local music, but not this year.

For the travellers, some points about AMH:

- Sound can actually be good if you get there early and get a good spot in front of mixing desk on the floor (i.e. don't stand under the balcony overhang).  Last show I saw was Jack White, and it sounded great where I was.  Probably has a bit to do with the band's sound people.
- Do not buy balcony tickets.  Apart from average sound, the sightlines are horrible and even giants will struggle to see the stage unless you line up for hours to get in first and near the rail.  It is beyond belief this venue even exists due to this.
- Because of above, you will find a long line of people before doors open.  I'd get there at least 30 minutes before doors (you'll still be a few hundred people back) to have a chance at posters and a half-decent spot on the floor.

I wish bands would just play at the Moody down the road.  Capacity is a bit less, but they could just charge a bit more and nobody would complain.

I bought tickets for Red Rocks when no Texas dates were announced, but I plan on being there for both nights in Austin and the show in GP. Being from the Dallas area, I've been to Verizon many times. It's just a pretty alright venue, nothing spectacular.

Hey everyone, noob here, so apologies for a likely dumb question.

How does the Roll Call pre-sale work for the ATX shows? Thanks

Hoping to get tickets to both shows. I've never seen them before but it's been on my bucketlist for years.

Well I expect if you're doing multi night runs, they will be very different shows each night. They have stated they don't plan on doing repeated songs on those multi night runs. For the one nighters I could expect similar sets of mostly the new album. However, you said you're going to Red Rocks and that venue always brings out something special in bands.

Hi Everyone,

I'm thinking about making 'yet' another road trip from San Antonio to see MMJ for a 6 or 7th time.   Not a big fan of Austin music venues and you guys are scaring me about Austin Music Hall.  I saw KOL years ago here and was in the balcony.  Not the greatest standing postion.

Does anyone have experience w 'General Admission VIP Tower'?  I see its $150 but is it worth it?  Thanks

Going to both shows and wish I had read this thread before buying tics. I bought for balcony bc I'm short and always get blocked by people on the floor. Are the balcony seats really that bad? If you bought balcony, can you still go down to the floor? This will be my first time in Austin. After seeing the 2nd Chicago show I knew I needed to see them again this tour. Have been wanting to get to Austin for a while now (hubby's Uncle lives here) so it seemed like a perfect fit.

The balcony "seats" are mainly GA bleachers.  You have to get there early to get as close to the railing as possible to see well unless you're 6' +. You cannot go back and forth from the balcony to the floor  The sound quality at the venue isn't ideal compared to other venues in town (The Moody Theater or Bass Concert Hall) but the last few bands I've seen @ AMH sounded great, Jack White, My Bloody Valentine, The Pixies, Soundgarden...like any show you have to orient yourself based on the volume level you can handle vs how well you need to see.  This venue just doesn't have the caveat of not having a bad spot in the place, unlike The Moody.

Even with all the bad reviews, the fact that these will be among the last batch of shows here has me tempted. Let these fiery shows burn the place down!!

This article makes it sound like it could be demolished before October.  Kinda hoping the shows get moved to the Moody or someplace cooler!

I went to two shows on the first leg. In Cleveland there were 4 or 5 of us. At Red Rocks there were hundreds. I'd say somewhere in between is a good guess. 😉

I ran into the same thing. The F1 races are that weekend, so all of the hotels close to downtown or towards the racetrack are price gouging. I did find a few good deals on AIRBNB, depending on how many people you are traveling with. I ended up just using points at a Double Tree on I-35.

I have GA floor tickets for Thursday and GA balcony tickets for Friday. This will be my only Waterfall tour experience so I obviously want to make the most of it. I am a roll call member and I have my laminate, but am not up to speed on the items below so if someone can help me out, that would be greatly appreciated.

1. Soundcheck parties - Do they still do these? If so, what do I need to make sure I get in?

2. Early entry - How does this work?

3. Spontaneous Curation- Where can I submit requests?

Thanks,

JNP

They cancelled most of the soundcheck parties for this tour so I'm not hopeful we'll get one.

There is a website with early entry info that will be posted a few days before the show. Basically we'll be able to enter 15-30 minutes before the general public.

I've submitted all of my spontaneous songs through Twitter. There will be a show specific hashtag for each show.

For the out of towners it's not just hotels to worry about F1 weekend. Traffic will suck. Uber will be surge pricing and streets downtown will be closed for events. On the positive side there will probably be some other good bands in town.

Local here - have two extra tickets for Thursday and two extra for Friday night if anyone is looking. Can meet before the shows outside the venue. Just asking face value for what we paid - $54 per ticket.

Looking forward to a great couple of evenings!

You say that like traffic doesn't suck?! lol  The shows are during the week, there's going to be tons of traffic per usual in Austin. But between Uber, Lyft, Austin Yellow Cab, Austin Cab and Capital Metro everyone will be able to get around, F1 is no SXSW in regards to transportation shortage. If you're looking for a limo or helicopter you might have issues

Homeaway/VRBO/AirBNB are good options to check for rooms, this late in the game a hotel within walking distance to the venue will be crazy even if you can find one.

I was in that situation for Red Rocks... They honestly didn't even look that closely but yes, as long as you bring the purchase receipt or whatever it is then you should be fine.

Anyone going to these shows feel like doing something nice for your fellow fans?

They have been selling some autographed merch with only 4 signatures this tour. I'm sure this is unintentional, but it's still kind of crappy for those of us who bought them. See these threads:

http://mymorningjacket.net/index.php/topic,19799.0.html
http://mymorningjacket.net/index.php/topic,19697.0.html

I know my situation can't be addressed now, but it would potentially limit other fans facing similar problems if you could let the crew/band/merch people know. Even just swing by the merch table and ask to see some autographed items. If you count only 4 autographs, point it out to them. They could pull those and make sure they get signed by whoever is missing.

Thanks.

Not sure how much free parking you'll find, but if you get there early enough there are lots of meters in the area.  There are some paid lots around there too.  Pretty easy to park.  I've found the app ParkMe pretty useful here in Austin.

I don't believe so, your best best are probably the paid lots that are a block or so from the venue (assuming you dont find a street spot). Those lots are usually $5-7. The venue is downtown in a pretty hip/busy spot with not a lot of parking to begin with.

Do not do that. They do tow. I used to work for their corporate HQ in that building. you have a few hours, but they do tow and have people going through the parking lot every hour.

Roll Call email says doors at 7pm, show at 8pm...

I'm rushing across town this evening to make show and my meeting ends at 7:45ish.

Any insight is much apprecaite.

Tom tweeted a while back about the 9:10-11:30 showtimes, so that definitely seems consistent

Just saw a billboard saying Elton is in town to perform as a part of the F1 festivities. Maybe an extra special Rocket Man with the man himself tonight?!?!

That was a crazy, unbelievable, mind blowing set.  From the slow burn of the beginning....to the face melting ending, wow.

FYI, "Will" was Will Johnson of Centromatic and it was sublime.

I can't imagine what night 2 will be like, but I know it will be different and just as good.

Awesome show!!

Got home around 1AM back to San Antonio but well worth the trip.  Probably my 2nd favorite Jacket show behind Red Rocks 2012.  Setlist was awesome!!

Venue was pretty bad though.  I think the Jacket are at the level of playing the Moody Theater or even the Majestic in San Antonio .

Am I the only one who thought Will Johnson being out there was a wasted opportunity? I was on the rail and he literally just tapped his feet for both songs and then at the end of both of the songs he was on sort of did some oohs and ahhs (golden). But he didn't even provide backup vocals at all. Hopefully they do a New Multitudes track with him so he can be involved.

Also, one of my favorite moments was Jim telling a story about Texas and the writing of "Golden" and how before Austin they'd go to bars and play to 3 or 4 people, and Austin was the first place where 10 people showed up.

Was really cool to hear him tell a story as that is something he does not really ever do.

That is very rare especially this tour when he doesn't say a word.  The only time I've ever heard Jim tell a story was during the Storytellers episode years ago.  I wish he did it more often.  I love listening to him banter it up.

REALLY liking the all-acoustic starts that we've seen in San Francisco Night 1 and now Austin Night 1.  Slowly but surely they are beginning to change things up in bigger and more interesting ways in the live realm and that's very exciting.  ...if only they had taken a more creative approach to Red Rocks :/ i'll shut up now

Weird, with no guests and a only 3 song encore...?
Just curious.

Yup, accurate.  But, with the long songs like Cobra, Steam Engine, etc, it was the same length as last night.

I lived in LA, but was out of town during the Wiltern stand.  I've never been lucky enough to see a "No song repeats" stand by MMJ before.  What a gift to the fans.  Wow.  Two fantastic nights.  I'm hard pressed to pick highlights.

1st night Austin, I was with friends and partying hard, major dance party.  Last night I was solobird and sober, 2 totally different experiences.
Friday's show was just unbelievable.  Jim didn't talk, but he was so interactive with the fans visually, and clearly the band was having a blast.
The setlist was just amazing.  knot into Like a River? Unreal
State of the Art was brought to life live. Infancy and touch me 1 into 2!
The set was seamless, it was almost one straight jam, they created a fluid performance.

I've seem them in Santa barbara, LA, Red Rocks, New Olreans, but something about last night really made this amazing.
Thanks for listening, I normally don't go on and on, but this was magic :)

He did on "Like a River" I think.  Didn't he?

Agree with you, Nikodeepdiver.  I've seen them in all of those places (except NO) and this one was magic.  Especially if you look at both nights as one big awesome set.

State of the Art...WOW! Also H town shout out to Patrick's chopped and screwed (really just slowed down) ending of Evil Urges. Carl on sax at end of Steam. Jim posing with arms crossed during Wordless (I think) was terrific, hopefully someone got a photo of that. Usually always try to get a spot on the rail but I loved watching the crowd go crazy from the balcony night 2. Master Plan and Touch Me part 1 were nice surprises but I especially loved Wonderful Man. Memories solo when Jim and Carl play in unison was magical. Can't beat Gideon extended jam and especially the bum bum bunna BUNNA of Dancefloors. Great times!

Btw, Carl was on fire last night.

Went to both shows.  Loved both of them but last night was truly a force.  The band was just in an absolute zone all night.  Never took the foot off the gas.  Been to a bunch of Jacket shows but last night was tops or at least even with Riverside Theater in Milwaukee in 2008
