You and me both. The only taping I have been to was Jim James solo, so I am really looking forward to seeing the boys here!
getting married in austin on 5/1. have to make this happen.
How does one get tickets for this show? I see it's announced a week before the show but that doesnt tell me much.
I'd guess it's completely random and all luck?
Got a good buddy in Austin and this could merit a visit.
unless you're a donor ($$$$) it's a lottery. if you don't win there is a space available line.

So I will not be booking my flight to Austin in that case.
Thanks for the ACL 2008 link. Watching this show I had a few thoughts.
First, why did they stop playing "Thank You Too", that has been my white whale since the get go?
Second, this show was great, but as good as these past shows are, I feel lucky to be a MMJ fan right now as they are on a whole 'nother level of epic these past few years. I will not say they are peaking right now, but they have hit a stride. Jim showed that even though he's not sliding around breaking his back on stage, he can be just as powerful a performer. Plus the band as a whole has never sounded tighter. The improv risks they have been taking lately have been paying off greatly. I think Spontaneous Curation really gave them a good jolt as a touring band.
I have never been to one of the tapings. Since the tickets don't guarantee entry, how early do you have to get there to get in?
Since they've moved to Moody a ticket does guarantee entry. Much nicer. To get into that '08 taping I got in line around 2pm.
Here's my PSA in regards to this...I live in ATX and have donated for the past 2 years.
Yes, you have to either donate to KLRU to get season tickets (personal or corporate) or win the ticket lottery, to guarantee entry; but keeping true to the history of the program, they still allow entry via the standby line. The key is getting there EARLY. I've had friends get in on standby to Sturgill Simpson, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Queens of the Stone Age, etc. It's not impossible and to be honest most people don't realize they still do that.
Keep in mind the old ACL studio from their 2008 taping held ~300 people, the new studio ACL Live - The Moody Theatre holds ~2700....
The standby line for season 41 was always slim to nonexistent, my buddy who got into Sturgill got in line @ 5 and his was one of the few tapings who had a decent line. The doors are @ 6:30 for ticket holders/donators/lottery winners and if they don't claim their tickets by 7:30/7:45 they are forfeited to the standby line. Also, if the venue isn't filled they will allow people in so it looks packed which looks better on TV (minus the mezzanine which is all corporate sponsors). They allow standby in ~7:45 to start the taping by 8.
People who have extras will also give theirs to people waiting in the standby line, trust me I've done it myself and seen it happen to my friends.
FINALLY MMJ @ THE MOODY!!!!

I got in line for Sturgill around 6:30 and got in. The only taping that I've tried hard to get into and didn't was PJ. It still pisses me off that Lance Armstrong got in and left after a few songs.

lol @ tried hard, that kinda rejection is rough, hence my opt out on most sxsw craziness. I can't stand in line aimlessly for hours to get turned down at the door. TG I got into Atoms For Peace popup show after sidewalk/line tailgating for 5 hours. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XdBnjKglVIU
I said ~5 as a conservative estimate, for the paranoid. I normally tell people to cruise around the venue @ that time bc it's a good gage of realistic entry
Totally forgot about that Armstrong incident! It seems like most of the corporate sponsors don't show up. Brought to you by Dell, but their employee's can't make the show, enjoy & buy our computers lol :drum:
PJ was tougher because they gave most of the space available tix to Wounded Warriors.

Thanks for the link. Good luck! Worst case is I will be waiting outside early in case they have extra spots. What time would be a good time to get in that line?
Wondering about that too. The only time I've done it was for Sturgill Simpson and I got there around 6:15 and got in.
entered. what time do they normally tape?
(speaking of sturgill... going to see him at acl moody on 5/5 and i'm stoooooked to hear the horns on the new songs)
Tapings start at 8
If I win, I may have 1 extra (if 'amerry' doesn't already need a ticket). 'amerry' should get someone's extra ticket, given the helpful information she has provided the forum.
They will be doing a live stream of this........ http://acltv.com/2016/04/27/acl-to-livestream-my-morning-jacket-taping-on-52/

For those of you who have been to one of these before...the email says passes will be handed out at 6pm but not to line up until 6pm. So, if I'm there right at 6pm I should be good, right? Or do I need to get there earlier than 6pm? Thanks!
I usually get there right at 6 so I'm on the floor.

They usually have some pretty nice posters. Not always, but worth a shot in case they do.
They also let you go in and out so you can buy a poster and take it back to the car if you want.
I'm doing a meet-and-greet show with The Struts in Des Moines on Monday night, so if anyone can capture and share the stream, feel free to let us know.
Going there early, hopefully someone is having an extra ticket. Fingers crossed.
never been to one of these, won tickets and am driving in from Houston this afternoon. I was just curious what the vibe is like a taping like this? is the crowd rocking out like usual or is it more subdued?
stoked either way,

i've never been either but I think it mostly has to do with the performer. On tv, it mostly seems subdued but for people like Kendrick and Beck, that place was lit!
It's a little more subdued. Most of the crowd got tickets from their company and a lot of people there probably aren't MMJ fans. If you're on the floor you're usually around actual fans.

Dark Psychedelic is definitely not the direction they have taken. I do consider Waterfall adult contemporary easy listening......which is a shame in my book.

yep. IMO, musically it hearkens back to
Lay Low and some of the more jam-friendly early material. lyrically, it's a bit corny though. but that's a department they've been lacking in for some time now.

When your favorite band gives you an inkling as to where they are headed and it comes of sideways in your opinion where else would you express your concern. Others liking it doesn't make them right. Nor does it me. The forum is a place to express and discuss. Nobody's saying the boys stink and the sky is falling.

This place is so far from what I would consider negative, I can't even comprehend where you're coming from. Sure there's discussion back and forth the way a forum should be, and some negative thoughts but those negatives are few and far between,IMO. To each their own but jeez man, if you think this place is negative I don't think you've visited too many other bands sites.
This place is so far from what I would consider negative, I can't even comprehend where you're coming from. Sure there's discussion back and forth the way a forum should be, and some negative thoughts but those negatives are few and far between,IMO. Unless you think anything that doesn't agree with your thinking is negative.
There's way, way more positives on this site than negatives as far as I'm concerned.
Maybe some people dont want discussion, we just wanna jam and not have any bad vibes when it comes to our favorite band. Sure there are some things they do I dont like but its not like I need to write a 6 paragraph essay about them.

Yep and "Throwback" is at 46:53 if you want to continue the debate. Count me on the side of loving it.

Screw it.....I'm just going to watch Red Rocks 8/14/15
Wow. I love Throwback. And happy to see Slow Slow Tune being played, really wanna get that at Red Rocks.

Well, they did just jam the daylights out of Compound Fracture
Plus the light show and Carl's playing on off the record
Not to mention the Crowd!!!!
I'm amazed at what they want me to believe......... a place, meeting, or medium where ideas and views on a particular issue can be exchanged.
I'm amazed at what we except in it's place.
I'm amazed at Don Dante
Bo has decided to get in on the action!!! That hat is so gigantic.
These Rocks are so gigantic...each of us are so small...this music is the bridge that binds us all to that place in our hearts....the place where we can finally recognize each other standing still and solitary in between these tiny stars and rocks.

Slow Slow Tune

damn those audio people were on point last night.
The songs are great. Sometimes little things stand out to me..... how about that smooth transition from Infancy into I Will Sing You Songs.
Jim was smiling, playing guitar, singing, and chewing gum all at the same time. That's coordination.
Throwback sounds like a new version of TWTHS. Awesome.
Cosign everyone saying Throwback is dope
I really love Throwback.

i can hear that. I thought they were about to play Steam.
also, was it just me or did Masterplan have a *slightly* different sound last night than, say, the live versions from last year? Wonder if it has to do with the remastering of ISM and them revisiting those songs. Its sounded heavier in recent live versions compared to what I hear from last night...
the fact they only played from the most recent two albums and ISM, makes me wonder if we will get all of ISM over the two nights at Red Rocks. Maybe not straight thru, but all of the songs. The Louisville shows next week should give us a glimpse

This is a discussion board where many people come for discussions. I have to second ericm's point that things are overwhelmingly positive here (except when discussing Wonderful Union of course).
Sweatband has an opinion. That's great! I read that he loves Slow Slow Tune, definitely not amongst my favorite MMJ songs. But I get it. Some people don't like Black Metal. That's fine too. While I am a fan, I also get that it's not for everyone.
Quote from: sweatboard on May 02, 2016, 10:56 PM
Yeah, I loved that they played Slow Slow Tune.....When that guitar cuts in it's like a lightning strike to the soul.
^^^^^ this ^^^^^
I could see Throwback working really well as a transitional song live, they could take that jam out sesh in the middle (which I was really digging) and easiyl slide in and out of multiple songs of theirs to create something totally new and beautiful live.....
I get what some people are saying that lyrically and all it's a bit on a the pop side of the spectrum but I'm ok with some new happy catchy tunes when they have such a fun intricate jam in them!! I'm in. CANNOT WAIT FOR RED ROCKS
Anybody have a pic of the poster?

Thanks! That's a good looking poster.
I was the first person NOT to get in from the standyby line but a guy took pity on me and gave me his extra.
I'm glad the full band finally got to play Moody. There really isn't anywhere else they should play anymore in Austin.
I would have liked something off AD or TTF or Z but it's a free Jacket show that I was lucky to get into so no complaints.
I'm in the pro Throwback camp.

i saw plenty of negativity on the FB "My Morning Jacket Fan Club" page yesterday. Much more personal than anything I have ever seen on here. I think the Forum has lost people to FB b/c of its convenience as a way to interact and get latest links/photos/etc. But I like the Forum b/c I think its a more appropriate place to have a discussion on the band. No one wants to read something even as long as this post on FB.
It's ok that other people have an opinion different than yours and just b/c they do, it doesn't mean that's "negative".
You know where I don't see much negativity? At a Jacket show! Hope to see/meet as many of you as I can at a show.
I mean this in the most positive way possible.. I hate Throwback.
I realize that every song cant be dondante or war begun, that they want to explore all types of emotions and musical horizons, but this seems like their attempt to make something that sounds normal and radio worthy.. Its predictable, generic, and uninspired. And thats fine, its just one song, but the fact that they keep playing it at shows with a new album on the horizon has me worried. Once upon a time they did the same thing with the song Circuital and 6 years later we have gotten that song live more times than not. I really hope this doesnt become the first single off of the new album, let alone a setlist staple... Then again, Big Decisions was the first song they promoted off of the waterfall and jts easily the worst of what i consider to be a very solid album and they rarely play it live. Still, ill take big d over Throwback ten times out of ten.
That said, im still extremely excited for the Louisville shows.
please remember the song has been played twice. Ever. This too will grow on you! Or maybe it won't. It takes all kinds (of songs). Personally, I dig. And think it has plenty of room to grow and evolve, just like the band. Fired up for some red rocks!
...and jcc0065, chillax. Ironic that you're calling out the forum for being negative yet you seem to have been at the center of quite a few tiffs on this site in your very short existence here. All is good.

It's been played three times now. OKC, Houston and ACL Live Taping. And the difference between Houston and ACL was night and day. They really extended the jam part for the taping compared to Houston.
I agree with your sentiments that it is a grower. And even when I first heard it in Houston it was stuck in my head for days after. I still find the lyrics lacking and the initial music a bit generic/average/pop, but that end jam was killer. I'm hoping for more of the latter part of the song than the former for their next album.

Count me in as a Throwback lover.
Surprised they don't do Like a River live as well. I thought it was a superb live song when they did it on KCRW

Looks like they're going to only show 25 minutes or so of MMJ when they broadcast this on PBS, as the DVR is telling me it's a split show between MMJ and Ben Harper. The DVR is set to record on 11/12 (Saturday), but ymmv so check your local listings. Thank goodness we have a webcast rip of the whole show.

I don't think it's all that odd, considering the band hasn't played ACL TV since 2008. What's criminal is that they only show 4 songs from an amazing performance.
